New Brew

Many thanks to Michael Beaton, founder of Frosty Knuckle Brewing Company and the folks at Mercury Brewing Company for showing us around today. Northshore magazine got an early taste of Beaton’s new Frosty Knuckle Ale. Very smooth! Beaton, the former president of Cape Ann Brewing Company has moved on and has just finished his first barrel of Frosty Knuckle, a German-style ale that is being brewed at Mercury.

The preliminary taste test is in and I can say it’s a very smooth, drinkable ale, light on the hops but with just enough flavor to make it interesting. This is a great year-round ale. It should be available in bottles and on tap around the region shortly.

Look for more info on Frosty Knuckle in the next issue of Northshore. Get the backstory on Mr. Frosty Knuckle, himself at frostyknuckle.com.

Also, we got the inside scoop on the new facility that Mercury is building in Ipswich. Here’s a sneak peak at the 36,000 square foot facility that they hope to have open in the fall. This facility will have a brewpub, as well, so fans of this local favorite will finally have a place to sample the latest batches of ale – see the picture below.

Unique North Shore Trialthon Training Program in its Seventh Year

Salem, MA, March 17, 2009 – This spring, B&S Fitness, the largest provider of fitness programs on Boston’s North Shore, is offering its seventh annual triathlon-training program in partnership with Salem Parks and Recreation. The program is the only one of its kind in the area, and one of the most comprehensive triathlon training programs in all of New England. Beginning May 9th, 2009 at Salem State College, B&S Fitness will be starting the twelve-week tri-training program which will be led by USAT Certified Coaches. The training program is geared to beginner- and intermediate-level triathletes.

Brandi Dion, co-owner of B&S Fitness stated, “We started this triathlon training program seven years ago, and in that time, we have coached over five hundred triathletes who have successfully completed the sprint distance Salem Witch City Triathlon, an event that we at B&S Fitness were instrumental in creating.”  She goes on to state that, “Many of our beginners have gone on to compete in numerous other triathlons, including longer races such as Olympic, Half Ironman and even Ironman distance triathlon events.”

Kim Bird, one of the many athletes who have participated in the B&S Fitness training programs from the beginning said, “When I started the tri-training program my first year, I was a bit unsure of what to expect. I was thrilled to find many beginners like myself, and I was able to learn critical skills. Plus, the group was so supportive – I became very close friends with many of the participants, so for me, it was way more than just triathlon training.” She goes on to state that, “Since that first year, I have gone on to compete in many triathlons including my first Half Ironman triathlon last summer which is a huge accomplishment for me.  I honestly don’t think I would have gotten this far without the support and the training I received with the B&S Fitness tri-training program.”

The B&S Fitness tri-training program starts at 9am on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 at Salem State College.  The program lasts for the twelve weeks, offering 4-5 coached workouts per week leading up to The Witch City Triathlon, which will be held August 2nd, 2009 at Forest River Park in Salem, MA. The Witch City Triathlon event includes a .5 mile ocean swim, a 13 mile bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run. The B&S Fitness tri-training session preps athletes for each of the events and also includes education and training tips related to sports nutrition, sports therapy, as well as sports psychology.
