“Corks & Forks” noche de los tapas: Tapas Night at Shubie’s

Title: “Corks & Forks” noche de los tapas: Tapas Night at Shubie’s
Location: Shubie’s – 16 Atlantic Ave. – Marblehead
Link out: Click here
Description: Join Shubie’s in Marblehead Friday, May 15th, 2009 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for a night a Tapas prepared by Chef Lynne Aronson.

Noche de los tapas will feature a flight of Spanish wines accompanied by a variety of Chef Lynne Aronsonʼs flavorful Spanish tapas. Enjoy empanadas and camerone tortallitas. Taste wines including El Coto, Rioja and Burgans Albarino, Rias Baixas. Bring friends and create your own tapeo – or moving party – on your own tapas and wine-tasting stroll. Small Bites. Bold Flavors.
The history of tapas dates back to Spanish King Alfonso the 10th who is said to have issued a decree that
all tabernas must serve a bit of food or tapa with each glass of wine. Tapa is derived from the verb tapar -
to cover. Customarily eaten standing up, tapas originated as savory treats such as a jamon or cheese
placed over the top of every glass, protecting it from flies and dust. Today, tapas comprises everything
from vegetable dishes, to seafood to canapes – from the very simple to more complex. And donʼt fret -
Tapas Night at Shubieʼs will be fly and dust-free so you wonʼt be required to balance your tapas on your
wine glass. Great Options for Every Occasion.
“We are excited to be bringing a bit of Spanish flair to the North Shore on May 9th,” said Carol Shube, coowner of Shubieʼs. “This is just the first in a series of events weʼll be hosting to highlight all of the amazing prepared foods created by Chef Lynne Aronson who I truly feel is a culinary gift to our area.” Added George Shube, Shubieʼs co-owner, “We have the perfect selection of wine varieties to accompany all food options here at Shubieʼs as well as the food you prepare yourself. Weʼre happy to suggest the perfect wine for any meal or occasion.”
Tapas Night is the first in a series of Shubieʼs palate-pleasing events planned for spring and summer. The cost is $18 per person. Whatʼs next? Stay tuned. Hint: weʼll be heading east from Spain.

Domaine Auvigue (oh-veeg) – Macon Villages 2007 – A White Wine I Can’t Keep My Corkscrew Out Of at Our Glass Wine Co. in Saugus!

SAUGUS – April 2009 - Macon region is part of Burgundy-south of the more famous (and expensive) Cote d’Or. It is home to fabulous, affordable Chardonnay with some of the same qualities as the more expensive northern neighbors like Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet that run $50 a bottle and more. Of course, the wines are not as rare and complex, but if you find some good ones… ourglasswinelogo
That is where Jean-Pierre Auvigue comes to the dinner table. Brian Lamb of Our Glass Wine Co. has been drinking his wines for over twenty-five years. Yes, they have that emphasis of honey and grapefruit on the tongue, yes they are crisp and dry, but you know what he likes most about them? They have a pure taste from start to finish. There is not a whiff or a dab or an undertone of something amiss about them. They are not over-oaked by any stretch. In fact there is no oak used at all. This is pure, fresh Chardonnay.

Auvigue’s Macon Villages is pale gold. There are fruit and floral notes with good length in the mouth. The Macon Villages comes from a vineyard very close to Pouilly-Fuissé. The grapes are planted on clay and limestone soils. Harvesting white wine grapes is very tricky because every day those grapes stay on the vine reaching their maximum ripeness, they are also losing precious acidity – that nervy, vivacious character in whites that is their sine qua non. It is finding that perfect moment when the acidity aligns with the ripeness that is the eureka time with a white wine.
auviguebros

Jean-Pierre is master of the eureka. For this reason, folks will be lucky to find a  bottle of Auvigue in the Our Glass Wine Co. cellar unless it’s just been delivered. People just cannot keep their hands off an Auvigue Macon Villages. It is the go to “Chardonnay” at chez Hurley.

To order a bottle, please email: brian@ourglasswineco.com, call the store at: (781) 941-8068, or visit: www.OurGlassWineCo.com
*You must be 21+ to purchase alcohol in the United State).

Important: Our Glass Wine Co. stands behind all Cynthia’s wines and guarantee that you will find them pleasing and delicious. You can return any of her wines for any reason if their style does not meet your expectations.

Trouble in the Plum Island Dunes

Plum Island – April 2009 - Plum Island Sound has experienced some trouble with some unfortunate visitors climbing the artificial sandbag dune, tearing out the recently planted dune grass.

The dunes are quite fragile as certain areas of the Plum Island Sounds have been experiencing erosion issues, some losing homes and lands, especially for the wildlife of the area. The grass is an intricate part of keeping the sand in place, especially  in storms what create a high tide or surf. A reconstructed fence will need to be secure to keep visitors off the grass and away from the dunes.

Plum Island is now looking for volunteers to help with the reconstruction of a fence, in hopes to keep visitors off the sandbags.

If you would like to help, pleae visit: www.newburyportchamber.org/recreation for more information on the Plum Island area.

PEM Launches Photography Program with SURFLAND: Photographs by Joni Sternbach

Title: PEM Launches Photography Program with SURFLAND: Photographs by Joni Sternbach
Location: Peabody Essex Museum – Salem, MA
Link out: Click here
Description: The Peabody Essex Museum of Salem presents more than forty images of stunning luminosity and elegance in SurfLand, the first solo museum exhibition of photographer Joni Sternbach opening Saturday, May 16th, 2009.

Sternbach captures portraits of surfers in tintype, a 19th-century technique little changed since its invention. The combination of historic process and contemporary subject is a dynamic one, yielding direct, timeless, one-of-a-kind images of individuals standing on the verge of sea and land. The combination of contemporary and historic extends to the presentation of SurfLand images accompanied by a selection of PEM tintypes from the 1860s through the 1890s, including portraits of Civil War soldiers and members of the Wampanoag tribe.

Surfland launches PEM’s new schedule of fine arts photography exhibitions organized by the Museum’s first-ever curator of photography, featuring contemporary works by world-class artists three-times per year. “I’m thrilled that the Peabody Essex Museum will introduce its new photography program with a debut of this powerful body of work,” said PEM Curator of Photography, Phillip Prodger. “Through Joni Sternbach’s lens, relationships between surfers, their boards and the landscape are shown with a primal grace.”

Part performance, part laboratory “Surfers came and found me,” said Sternbach, who discovered that her wooden, 19th-century-style view camera and portable darkroom on the beach attracted potential subjects. Captured on the shores of San Diego, Santa Cruz, and Montauk, New York, Sternbach’s images possess the immediate quality of a singular print created then and there.

The process of creating a tintype can indeed be as much an act of performance as visual art. Tintype is a wet-plate technique, meaning that the chemicals must be hand-applied, exposed and developed before the plate dries. The chemistry is slow, requiring utter stillness on behalf of the subject for two or three minutes. Only the waves move evocatively around their ankles.

Far from typical surfer action shots, the images have an otherworldly quality. At the place where sea and sand meet, Sternbach’s subjects stand like ocean creatures briefly alighted on land before slipping back into the surf. Not representative of any physical ideal, they embody a range of types––from weekend warriors to seasoned athletes.

Sternbach’s democratic eye renders professional and amateur equal, undistinguished by beauty, age or experience and unified by their love of the waves.

The Sea Gull Shop of Marblehead Opens Artists Loft

MARBLEHEAD – April 2009 - The Sea Gull Shop in Marblehead has opened its “Artists Loft” featuring renowned North Shore artists. The Loft, which is located on the second floor of the Seagull Shop has a myriad of mixed media for sale and will be continually revolving artists.

According to store proprietor Elizabeth Laub, “We are ecstatic over the quality of artists that we have attracted here. They are excited to be in our community since many of their pieces capture the essence of the North Shore. We opened the Loft with a wide variety of artwork which includes beautiful paintings of Marblehead, as well as jewelry, photography, and much more.”

“Upstairs at The Sea Gull, an Artisans Loft came about from wanting to showcase local artisans while maintaining the shop’s mission of being ‘purveyors of fine gifts’. The Seas Gull has carried over with what we feel our shoo reflects, essentially the feeling of Marblehead by choosing fine artists that bring a passion to their craft. We are showcasing them in their newly renovated sun-filled upstairs, creating a wonderful space to view the fine are and find the perfect gift for any occassion.” explained Ms. Laub.

The Sea Gull has opened the loft with the artwork of Back Bay photographer Jen Matson, known for photographing nature and outdoor imagery. “We are excited that Jen recently spent the afternoon in Marblehead with her camera!” said Ms. Laub. “In addition we are thrilled to have pieces created by Michelle and Bill Champitto, owners of ‘Fresh Cut Glass’. They are the creators of artisan crafted glass art windows, infusion jars, wall scones, and more.

Also, The Gull Shop has worked with Karen Roberts, a Marblehead artist who paints on canvas of all sizes. “Karen uses the coastline as inspiration for her beautiful works. She also has included hand-carved shore birds, created by her father, Bill Roberts.”

The loft also includes handmade jewelry by Diane Kelley of Winthrop. All of her pieces use the finest quality of crystal, vintage glass, recycled glass, and semi precious stones. Gift buyers will love Sandy Guys’ Merrimack Valley Essentials, a selection of handmade soaps and body products made with all natural ingredients. “Sandy was a featured ‘Secret Shopper’ in the Boston Globe, February 2000,” said Ms. Laub.

Another featured artist, Mary Bowles and Kerri Bromberger. The two only use genuine natural, non-endangered seashells and sea life to create mosaics, ornaments, night-lights and many other gorgeous items including mirrors.

The Sea Gull Shop is located at 146 Washington Street in Marblehead.

Janet Swaysland of Beeline Labs ‘Swayed’ the Crowd at the Marblehead Chamber Business Breakfast Forum

Marblehead – April 15, 2009 – The Marblehead Chamber of Commerce hosted a Business Breakfast Forum “Web 2.0 – PR Tactics You Can Use Now,” presented by Janet Swaysland. The well-attended forum  focused on Social Media, online conversation and participation, and the power shift from companies to consumers.

Janet Swaysland is a co-founder and partner at Beeline Labs, a marketing strategy firm that helps organizations integrate social media principles into business programs and practices. According to Swaysland, there is a new balance of power and consumers are more in control these days. “Seventy-eight percent of consumers trust the advice of other consumers,” said Swaysland, who encouraged the audience to trust one another and each other. To a small business, it means huge new opportunities to get your business noticed, get new customers, and better understand what the customers you already have really like or don’t like about what you offer.

swaysland-bbf-4-15-09
Swaysland offered suggestions on how to help grow your business by engaging people online. The first step is to “social modify” your website and take a fresh look at it.  Then find out where your customers are and be present there. Make sure to “activate your advocates” by using word of mouth techniques and encourage your customers to write reviews and comments. Swaysland also advised connecting both online and offline, reminding the audience that “more online connections are driving offline get-togethers.” Lastly, “listen, learn, adapt and repeat” – keep searching and try something new.

The seemingly overwhelming number of popular methods currently in use online (including Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Ning, Plaxo and Spoke) prompted one audience member to ask, “How do you let this not take over your life?” Swaysland replied that she herself “dabbles” and uses some online tools as searching resources but reminded the audience that “you don’t have to do everything, just do something consistently.” Swaysland drove her point home with a Power Point presentation that highlighted actual website content of some local businesses and how they do or do not effectively incorporate many of the tactics and suggestions mentioned in the Forum.

Throughout the presentation, as well as during a question and answer session following the forum, the audience was able to address Swaysland with their own questions and comments on many of the topics and tools presented in the Forum.

The funny part is that I found out through Facebook first thing this morning. Not only did Facebook help remind me that it is my birthday, but it also told be about Rick’s. Feel free to make jokes about my senility now.

So, Happy Birthday to my boss, Rick and to everyone else out there who celebrates today! Who might that be, you ask? Here are a few notables, past and present:

  • Shirley Temple
  • Roy Orbison
  • Valerie Bertinelli
  • Lee Majors
  • John Hannah

And speaking of the Patriots, I received an early birthday gift yesterday via an email from my father who played pro football many years ago. Jon Morris was the center for the Patriots from 1964-1974 (and went on to play with Detroit and then Chicago until 1978). The Patriots have nominated him for their Hall of Fame and you can vote online now through May 31 at patriots.com! He’s up against Jim Nance and Houston Antwine.

About The Salem Mission:
For almost three decades, The Salem Mission has been offering men and women the opportunities they need to end their homelessness. Research shows that two factors are responsible for this problem: a lack of affordable housing and the persistence of poverty in our community. We believe that the way to solve this crisis one person at a time is to provide housing with supportive services, to encourage personal and income development, and stability in physical and mental health. To achieve our ambitious goals, we deliver a suite of essential services on our Seeds of Hope Campus.

North Shore Music Theatre Announces Turn-Around Plan

Seeks $2 Million to Launch ’09 Season by July

nsmt2005(April 15, 2009, Beverly, MA) –  North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) officials announced a turn-around plan today that would deliver a six-show musical theater season, along with its traditional production of A Christmas Carol and other concerts and educational programs, at nearly half the cost of previous seasons, a $4-million savings in annual expenses. The plan’s success hinges on the theater’s ability to raise $2 million in donations by this July to jumpstart a new business model and launch a 2009 season.

The business model, developed and refined over the last several months, calls for “co-production” with other regional theaters whereby the partner-theaters share shows and their associated expenses. Through co-production NSMT will be able to deliver each show at dramatically lower costs, while maintaining the high artistic quality that audiences have come to expect.

INTERVIEW: We spoke with some of the legendary performers who have graced the stage at NSMT over the years to get their take on the theatre and tell a few stories. Click here for more.

The $2 million need  is far less than the $4.5 million the theater faced last December when a crumpling economy, plummeting ticket sales and ongoing recovery from a devastating fire in 2005 left it unable to cover its operating costs. Since that time grassroots fundraising efforts have yielded approximately $400,000 in support, which has helped fund the theater’s base-line operating costs, enabling it to focus its efforts on a turn-around strategy.

“Our business model is a critical step in the theater’s financial recovery,” said David Fellows, Chair of NSMT’s Board of Trustees. “We also must restructure our balance sheet and enhance our fundraising capability. If monies are not raised in time for a 2009 season, we would continue our fundraising efforts toward a 2010 season next summer, but would run the risk of our creditors giving up on us.”

NSMT’s co-production venture and upfront contributions of $2 million would enable a 2009 season to begin in July and continue into the fall, closing in December with A Christmas Carol. The following season would commence at the beginning of the summer. The initial ’09 season line-up advertised in advance to NSMT subscribers is likely to change based on negotiations with the partner-theaters; however, the shows will consist of popular, mainstream, musical theater hits.

“The shows will still be original for the season but will have a two-week instead of a three- to four-week run, and with shared production expenses, actual costs will be 40 percent less than in the past,” said Barry Ivan, NSMT’s Artistic Director and Executive Producer. “We will adapt each show to our specific space and audience, putting our signature on it. In a way, we are returning to our roots. Years ago NSMT had great success working in partnership with other theaters.”

Though NSMT is ready to run with a new business model, it still faces the financial challenge of delivering a 2009 season and making good on its commitment to subscribers, many of whom have paid in advance for their tickets. “Some subscribers have generously converted their subscriptions to donations,” said Fellows. “But for those who may not be able to do that, they have a credit with the theater and we appreciate their continued patience and understanding as we work toward delivering a season, if not in 2009, then hopefully in 2010.”

“We have work ahead of us but we have a viable business plan,” Fellows added. “We need the funding to launch the new business model and we need the continued cooperation of our creditors and the support of our donors to have a future. With their backing, our revival could serve as a national model to other performing arts organizations who are trying to survive these challenging economic times.

“We are grateful for our loyal supporters and urge everyone who cares about North Shore Music Theatre to make as generous a contribution as possible to assure that this theater and local cultural resource is here for the benefit of future generations,” said Fellows.

One of the largest nonprofit professional theaters in New England and the second largest nonprofit arts organization in Massachusetts, NSMT has produced dozens of new musicals, including national and world premieres, earning it a reputation as one of the most popular theaters in the U.S. Its Theater for Young Audiences, Academy of Music Theatre and school outreach programs have reached more than two million children and young adults across the state.
