North Shore Locations Vie for Grant

This is a bit of a cross-post since we posted the press release in our News section yesterday but I thought it was worth mentioning here, as well.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation launched the Partners in Preservation program yesterday, an initiative that provides $1 million in restoration grants to local historic sites. One site among a list of 25 will be chosen for a grant based on a popular vote via the Web. That’s where you come in. Four sites from the North Shore have been included in the list of 25. Here they are:

  • Crane Estate, Ipswich
  • Lowell’s Boat Shop, Amesbury
  • Salem Old Town Hall, Salem
  • Schooner Adventure, Gloucester

You can cast one vote per day online at: www.PartnersinPreservation.com now through May 17th, 2009.

Happy voting!

FOUR Unique North Shore Historic Locations are Competing for the “Partners in Preservation” $1 Million Grant!

GREATER BOSTON AREA – April 14, 2009American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation hosted a press conference at Faneuil Hall to launch the community-based Partners in Preservation program in the Greater Boston area, an initiative that provides $1 million in restoration grants to local historic sites. Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino were on hand to launch this innovative online program. Partners in Preservation encourages local residents and people across the country to participate by voting for their favorite historic place from a diverse slate of 25 sites across the Greater Boston area.

At the press conference, the 25 sites eligible to receive funding were unveiled for the first time!

The program was officially launched at Historic Faneuil Hall with The Honorable Deval L. Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts; The Honorable Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of the City of Boston; Richard Brown, Vice President, Philanthropy, American Express; David Brown, Executive Vice President, National Trust for Historic Preservation; Wendy Nicholas, Director, National Trust for Historic Preservation Northeast Office; and representatives of the 25 sites.

“Historic preservation not only protects our heritage, it also stimulates the economy by creating jobs in travel and tourism throughout the Commonwealth,” said The Honorable Deval L. Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts and Co-Chair of the Partners in Preservation Advisory Committee.

As noted during the press conference, research has shown that the rehabilitation of historic buildings generates as much if not more employment than new construction. Preservation also infuses money into the economy by purchasing materials needed to complete projects.

The Greater Boston area is the fourth region to host the Partners in Preservation program and receive funding from American Express, which previously supported preservation projects in San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans. Together, American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are redefining preservation across the country through the Partners in Preservation program.

“Greater Boston’s central role in the founding of our nation, and the important place it holds in telling America’s tale, make it a perfect place for the Partners in Preservation program,” said the Honorable Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of the City of Boston and Co-Chair of the Partners in Preservation Advisory Committee.

“Through the Partners in Preservation program, we seek to spotlight historic sites in Greater Boston, drive local tourism and business, while saving pieces of history,” said Timothy J. McClimon, President, American Express Foundation. “Every vote counts towards providing a better future for Greater Boston’s historic treasures. We encourage everyone to vote online daily and help us choose the winning sites to receive grant funding.”

“We work with communities to save the places that matter to them,” said David J. Brown, Executive Vice President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Partners in Preservation provides a way for individuals living in the Boston area to actively participate in the work to save our heritage. By helping us give away a million dollars for preservation, they are creating a lasting legacy for this community,” added Brown.

People can cast one vote per day online at: www.PartnersinPreservation.com now through May 17th, 2009.

The winner of the popular vote is guaranteed funding. Additional grants will be awarded on June 16th, 2009 to a number of the other sites after review by an Advisory Committee comprised of Greater Boston civic and preservation leaders, American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In total, $1 million in preservation grants will be awarded.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation used specific criteria to select the chosen 25 diverse historic sites, including their historic, architectural and cultural significance, demonstrated community support, ability to complete a preservation project by December 2010, and potential to contribute to tourism or community development.  They range from cultural centers to maritime treasures.

The 25 selected historic places in Greater Boston are as follows:

  • Crane Estate, Ipswich
  • Cyclorama, Boston Center for the Arts, South End
  • Edgell Memorial Library, Framingham
  • Eliot Congregational Church of Roxbury
  • Jose Matéo Ballet Theater, Cambridge

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation encourage all Greater Boston residents, and people who care about Greater Boston, to cast their vote April 14th – May 17th, 2009. The public can vote once daily until Midnight on May 17th, 2009. A public Open House at all 25 sites will be held the weekend of May 2nd – 3rd, 2009, to allow the community an opportunity to tour and learn more about each of the historic sites. Hours, exclusive American Express merchant offers and additional information can be found on the Partners in Preservation website at: www.PartnersinPreservation.com.

The Advisory Committee will hold a closed-door session to review the candidates on June 9th, 2009. The recipients will be announced at a press conference on June 16th, 2009.

About the Partners in Preservation Program:
Launched in 2006, Partners in Preservation is a program in which American Express, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, pledged $5.5 million over a five-year period toward preserving historic places throughout the United States. American Express has already allocated $2.4 million in preservation grants, which has allowed recipients to make significant progress in achieving their preservation goals.

In this partnership, American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation seek to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of historic preservation in the United States and to preserve America’s historic and cultural landmarks. The program also seeks to inspire long-term support from local citizens for the historic places at the heart of their communities.

About American Express: American Express Company (www.americanexpress.com) is a leading global payments and travel company founded in 1850.

Historic preservation has long been the hallmark of American Express’ involvement in the community, reflecting its recognition of the contribution of sites and monuments to a sense of national and local identity and the role that their preservation can play in attracting visitors and revitalizing neighborhoods. As early as 1983, American Express launched a cause-related marketing effort that raised $1.7 million for the preservation of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. From 1996 to 2005, American Express contributed more than $10 million to help preserve 126 historic sites in 62 countries from the World Monuments Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites. In June 2006, the company announced the American Express Partners in Preservation initiative, with the National Trust for Historic Preservation as its partner in the U.S. and the World Monuments Fund as its partner internationally.

Gigi’s of Andover Launches New Designer Consignment Closet

ANDOVER – April 14, 2009 – In this down economy, women are looking for ways to keep their style current while dealing with their shrinking wallets. Gigi’s announces the launch of their new Chic Consignment Closet, the creative way for recessionistas to turn their closets into cash or maintain their chicness on a diminished budget. Located in Gigi’s boutique, the Chic Consignment Closet offers new and gently used designer dresses, jeans, handbags, jewelry and shoes at 1/3 to 1/4 of their original retail price.

“It’s very popular to shop in consignment stores now due to the economy and the demand for budget-friendly shopping alternatives.” said Lisa Nardone, Owner of Gigi’s. “ I wanted to make it more of a boutique shopping experience than a traditional consignment retail outlet. “

The Chic Consignment Closet gives women and girls a way to clean out their closets by selling their gently used designer items for cash. They accept juniors and women’s clothing, accessories, handbags, jewelry and special occasion dresses such as Prom. All items have less than two years old and from contemporary designers such as Nanette Lepore, Milly, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Theory, D&G, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Prada, True Religion, Citizens and Seven to name a few. Once items have been sold, the consignor will be paid 50% of the selling price. Whatever is not sold after 90 days is donated to charity.

“With Prom season in full bloom, we are encouraging girls to bring in their recently worn designer dresses to exchange for another dress,” said Nardone. “Most girls wear a Prom dress once and then it sits in her closet so this gives her an option to pass on the dress or swap it for a new one.”

The Chic Consignment Closet is now accepting spring and summer items by appointment on Monday’s from 10:00 and 2:00.

For more information on becoming a consignor, please contact Gigi’s at: (978) 475-1277, or visit: www.chicconsigment.com

Salem Main Streets Launches Farmer’s Market Website!

MONDAY, April 13, 2009Salem Main Streets happily announces the return of a Farmers’ Market to historic Derby Square. Along with the announcement of the market’s return, Salem Main Streets has also just launched the market website (www.salemfarmersmarket.org), which highlights aspects of the market and will be updated regularly.

The Salem Farmers’ Market committee is made up of local volunteers and organized by Salem Main Streets, a non-profit organization. The opening day ceremonies celebrating the return of the market 375 years after Salem was first authorized to hold a weekly farmers’ market will be Thursday, June 25th, 2009 at 4pm in Derby Square.

salemfarmersmarket

The Salem Farmers’ Market’s goal is to meet the needs of the local community for fresh local produce at a convenient location, create a weekly event that adds to the vibrant atmosphere of the downtown and support local small family farmers by providing a direct market for their produce and goods. The Farmers’ Market gives local residents the opportunity to purchase fruits and vegetables which have been picked by a local farmer at the peak of season. This preserves the nutritional content and freshness because the fruits and vegetables do not travel as far to get to your table. Shoppers have the opportunity to speak with the person growing the items to find out how it was grown.  The farmers will be at Derby Square every Thursday so people can plan their shopping and select from what the farmers bring that suits their needs for an evening meal or for the whole week. Downtown businesses will also remain open for additional shopping hours on the evenings of the market.

Salem Farmers’ Market will take place Thursday evenings from 4pm–7pm through October 29th, 2009.

The gathering is a great way to learn about current opportunities to assist the Festival, an all-volunteer organization comprised of more than forty committees working to produce the region’s premier summer arts festival, to be held July 1st–5th, 2009.

Volunteering for the Festival is “an opportunity to make things happen, to add to the growth of the Festival,” said Sandra Broughton, co-chair of the Festival’s Volunteer Recruitment Committee. On a more personal level, she added, “It’s a great way to meet people.” Light refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be available.

The range of volunteer opportunities is broad, and many can fit the volunteers’ time schedules. Even those who don’t have much spare time “can work as little as an hour at a time, depending on their schedules,” according to Sandra.

Pre-Festival volunteer opportunities include planning the Champagne Reception (on June 28th), setting up art exhibits, and assisting with the festival events publicity.

During the Festival, volunteers staff art exhibits and information booths, run events such as the model boat workshop and the sand sculpture competition, and operate the Festival’s Logo Store which sells T-shirts, glasses, and other products branded with the Festival’s logo.

Support committee opportunities include helping manage the Festival’s database, working on the Festival’s printed Program, fundraising, and assisting the Festival’s treasurer.

For additional information on the Festival, a calendar of events, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, please visit: www.MarbleheadFestival.org

Marblehead Mural

fenway_muralThis photo was emailed to us here at Northshore yesterday and I thought I’d share it all with you. Hans de Castellane is a Cape-based artist who is working on this Fenway Park mural in Marblehead. According to Hans, “It has a working scoreboard so the kids can keep score as well as a John Hancock sign that lights up.”

Pretty cool, Hans! You can check out his work at hansmurals.com.

To Be a Red Sox Fan Again

There was a time when I was a big Red Sox fan. I was living in Boston with the rest of the world along Comm. Ave., went to sports bars to watch games on a regular basis, and attended two or three games each season. I could walk into Star Market and pick up a conversation with the bagger about last night’s win. On game days, the T was filled with red and white jerseys. Kenmore Square was one huge party. Even as a child growing up in the suburbs, the team was a part of life. Heck, I even had my foot nearly run over by ‘Oil Can’ Boyd one year trying to get his autograph outside Fenway Park. It’s nearly impossible not to love the Red Sox.

Then, about four years ago, I got a job working with a local television station and my love for the Red Sox was promptly ejected, so to speak. You see, the more the Red Sox won, the more we all had to work. The playoffs were the worst and I wasn’t the only one secretly hoping for a loss—the anticipation of doom permeated the newsroom, even though most of us cheered each time Ortiz blasted one onto Lansdowne Street. But getting home at 3am only to get up three hours later and do it all over again for weeks at a time wasn’t exactly my idea of being a Red Sox fan. Don’t even get me started on “The Papelbon” dance craze. It was tough, too, not cheering at home, especially when my wife, donning her Pedroia jersey, would yell at me to stop being such a poor sport and root for the hometeam, already.

Fortunately, times have changed. I can go back to being a Red Sox fan this season. I suspect my wife will be happy about this and I can only hope that Red Sox nation won’t publiclly flog me for my past transgressions. Consider this my public apology. Maybe now, my boss will understand if I come in a little late once in a while. Think he’ll let me take the entire month of October off?

Cape Ann Chamber – Home & Garden Show Thank You

The Cape Ann Home and Garden Show was another great success thanks to a terrific and hardworking committee. The co-chairs, Ruth Pino, ReMax Advantage, and Ed Collard, House Doctors, Ken Shaefer, Right Angle Kitchens, David Marsh, Steve Noble, Jerry Noble Electricians, Martin Ray, Martin H. Ray Landscape Design, Tony Corrao, Precision Roofing, Tom Spittle, Roy Spittle Associates, Skip Kelley, Skip Kelley Associates and Judd Wilson, Smith Ace Hardware and Lumber.

The Show could not go on without generous sponsors:  Thanks to  Platinum Sponsor: The Curtain Shop, Three Gold Sponsors: Building Center, Roy Spittle Associates, Inc., Precision Roofing Services of New England, Three Silver Sponsors: G. Everett Mahony Insurance, Windover Development, LLC, BankGloucester and the Shows media sponsors: North Shore 104.9, Northshore Magazine and the Gloucester Daily Times. hgshowphoto1

The creative minds of John Dugger, Judd Wilson, Ed Collard and Tony Corrao, designed and built an interactive Energy Efficient Showcase with a focus on saving energy in the home used materials from many of the exhibitors. Martin Ray did an excellent job both inside and out welcoming over 1,500 people to the Show with beautiful gardens featuring his work with granite and plants from Wolf Hill and Corliss Brothers.

David Marsh and Peter Webber also deserve a special thanks for working so hard as the “sign men” helping to get the word out by putting up signs all around Cape Ann. The committee is looking forward to planning the next Home & Garden Show in 2010.

Chamber Business Breakfast Forum on April 15th

All are invited to join the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce at the next Chamber Business Breakfast Forum on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 at 8am at Maddie’s Sail Loft, located at 15 State Street.

About the Presentation – “Web 2.0 — How to grow your business by engaging people online” Think of the Internet “1.0″ as websites that essentially put brochures and information online (along with some email and shopping.) Web 2.0, also dubbed “social media,” is all about conversation online, it’s about participation — and a power shift from companies to consumers, as consumers now have the ability to rate products and places, get information when, where and how they prefer, act as “citizen journalists” and make choices based on a whole new world of social interaction. What does this all mean to a small business? It means huge new opportunities to get your business noticed, get new customers, and understand better what the customers you already have really like, or don’t, about what you offer — all for very little cost, by the way.

In this session you will learn:
> The new rules of marketing and PR
> The new tools — rethinking your website and getting to know Twitter, Facebook, Yelp!…
> 5 things to start doing now, and 3 things to stop doing
> And what local businesses are getting it right (and some with untapped opportunity, shall we say)

janet-swayslandAbout Presenter Janet Swaysland – Janet is a co-founder and partner at Beeline Labs, a marketing strategy and services firm that helps companies understand and benefit from how “Web 2.0″ (or “social media”) changes the way they work with customers, employees and the community. Beeline Labs clients include FedEx, Microsoft, Intuit, and Fidelity’s Boston Coach. Janet was previously president of the U.S. region at Brodeur Worldwide, a global public relations agency, served as Vice President of U.S. Communications for The Body Shop, and was SVP of the public relations group at Mullen. She lives in Old Town with her husband, 16 year old daughter, 101 year old mother in law and Sammy the dog.

Tickets for the breakfast are: $15 for members and $20 for non-members.
