“Spring Fling” at Newburyport Art Association

Solo Show by Award Winning Landscape Photographer Dale Blank Opens April 1

NEWBURYPORT, MA– “Spring Fever”, a solo show featuring the new work of award-winning local photographer Dale Blank, will appear in the Laura Coombs Hills Gallery of the Newburyport Art Association (NAA) from April 1 through April 14, 2010. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday night, April 3, 2010 from 7 to 10 pm. Reflections, symmetrical components and fleeting light are the mainstays of Ms. Blank’s photography. Natural and man-made light are featured: sun and moon rises and -sets, fireworks, fairs, city lights or movement through time and space.

“Spring Fever” features photographs from the North Shore, Sonoma, Barcelona, New York City and Washington, D.C., all works being expressive of the season. Ms. Blank is a member of the NAA, the Rockport Art Association and the Rocky Neck Art Colony. Her work has appeared at many of their shows, exhibitions and sales. She was awarded an Industrial Development Foundation Award for Photography at the NAA Winter Show 2009 and the M.A. Arakelian Memorial Award for Best of Show Winter 2006.  She has held solo shows and participated in juried shows and exhibitions at many other local venues. “The artist has managed to frame heat as atmospheric condition with a quiet spring landscape. This is a wonderfully rich image, full of contrasts…keep looking,” wrote juror Elizabeth Wykoff of one of Ms. Blank’s winning works. “Hours after first experiencing (the piece) I am still drawn to the attraction/repulsion relationship. I love that the image provides opportunity for various narrative interpretations,” Cynthia Meyers Foley wrote of another. A Massachusetts native, Dale is a graduate of Brandeis University. Her landscape photography is the basis for the Cape Ann Calendar series. Her work has been featured in many other calendars, visitors’ guides and private collections. She resides in Gloucester.

Show hours are Monday and Wednesday through Friday, 11am-5 pm; Saturday, 11am- 5 pm and 7-9 pm; and Sunday, 1-5 pm. The NAA is closed on Sunday, April 4.  CONTACT: Carol Reynolds, Gallery Director Newburyport Art Association 65 Water St., Newburyport, MA 01950 978-465-8769

Spin For Hope

An exciting American Cancer Society fundraising event is coming to our community!  The American Cancer Society’s Spin for Hope™ is a three-hour indoor cycling event that will take place simultaneously at more than 25 health clubs around Massachusetts.  Locally, Manchester Athletic Club will be hosting a Spin for Hope event, on Sunday, March 7, from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.

There will be a Breakfast Reception held in the MAC Café for Cancer Survivors, riders, and guests at 8:15 a.m. on that day to honor any and all cancer survivors.  Manchester Athletic Club welcomes anyone in the community to join us for some light refreshments beforehand.  All survivors will then be escorted into the event and honored in a “Survivor’s Parade” as the cycling begins.

We need more community members to spin for the duration of the event; organize teams of spinners; and/or volunteer at the club the day of the event.  Funds raised through Spin for Hope will support the American Cancer Society’s programs of cancer research, education, advocacy, and service.

Spin for Hope is an event that allows residents to fight cancer through fun and fitness in the Cape Ann community.  For more information about Spin for Hope or to participate visit www.cancer.org/spinforhope or contact Lindsay Norton.

Tri Sport Challenge

On Sunday, March 21st, young people ages 5 to 14, will spend the afternoon at the Manchester Athletic Club Tri Sports Challenge.  The Challenge will run from 1pm to 4pm and will be conducted totally indoors.  The course includes a swim, challenging and fun obstacle course and running track.  Participation requires advanced registration by March 12, 2010.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, positive experiences with physical activity at a young age helps lay the basis for being regularly active throughout life and young people age 6 to 17 should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.

Enrollments are limited to 125 children and enrollment is open through Friday, March 12, 2010.  Membership is not required and this unique and fun event is open to the community.  Visit www.manchesterathleticclub.com or call (978) 526-8900

The Full Yield, Inc. Launches Breakthrough Collaboration to Put Food Back at the Heart of Healthcare

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the nation’s #1 health plan, will offer program to employers to improve people’s health while reducing healthcare spending

The nation’s first fully integrated collaboration between the food and healthcare industries to simultaneously improve health and reduce healthcare spending has been launched by The Full Yield, Inc.  www.thefullyield.com.   The Full Yield rolls out in greater Boston this month in an initially exclusive partnership with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the top ranking commercial health plan in the U.S., and an inaugural partnership with Roche Bros. Supermarkets, a progressive food retailer.  The Full Yield will be available later this year in other supermarket chains in New England and the company will begin nationwide expansion in 2011.

“America is suffering from and paying for a refined foods diet,” said Zoe Finch Totten, The Full Yield founder and CEO.  “This observation is no longer new, but our collaborative model for addressing the problem is very new.  Not only do we make it easier for people to recognize, access and eat healthier foods and to adopt the lifestyle behaviors essential to better health and productivity, we do so in a way that can ultimately unify every individual, organization, community, and industry around improving public health, which in turn will improve our economic and environmental health.  This is not about or for any one player, it is about unifying all parties to correct a complex and systemic problem affecting every single one of us.”

Working with health plans, employers, healthcare providers, food manufacturers, food retailers, and food service operators, The Full Yield provides two programs to improve health: the Right to Eat™ Store Program, which guides consumers in making health-supporting purchasing decisions and reinforces the health and wellness initiatives and related private label products of all participating retail chains, and The Full Yield™ Program, a 12-month comprehensive and scientifically validated wellness program for individuals to improve and preserve health.  More than 50% of the U.S. population suffers from and is paying for chronic disease caused by diet and lifestyle choices; participants in The Full Yield™ Program can expect to measurably improve their health, reduce their reliance on medication, and improve their quality of life as they age.

The Full Yield™ Program includes:
1. Health-Supporting Food Prescription: A list of health-supporting and health-depleting foods is available for members and educational information is available on-line and throughout Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms stores.  In addition, the company offers fresh, natural prepared meals and snacks to use while learning to cook with health-supporting foods, or when convenience matters most.   All Full Yield meals and snacks meet the nutrition guidelines established by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Diabetes Prevention Program, the National Institutes of Health, and the USDA.

2. Help and Support: Personalized phone support from coaches trained in a method clinically proven to result in long-term behavior change.

3. Biometric and behavioral monitoring: Clinically validated health status surveys and online tracking throughout the 12- month program help participants understand their cardiometabolic health status and monitor their improvement.  Biometric monitoring includes total blood lipid profile (total, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides), fasting insulin and hemoglobin A1c, C-reactive protein, blood pressure, waist circumference, weight and BMI, and % body fat.

4. Exercise: Individual and team-based programs and pedometers help participants engage in walking or other purposeful physical activity equivalent to 10,000 steps per day.

5. Tools for Healthier Living: Program participants have access to a differentiated online suite of interactive tools, including the behavioral and biometric tracking applications, social networking to facilitate and supporting behavioral change, educational and cooking videos, and a database of recipes, menu plans, and meal plans that meet the company’s nutrition criteria and food prescription.

“Harvard Pilgrim is very proud to be breaking new ground in our partnership with our employers and The Full Yield,” said Judith Frampton, RN, Vice President of Medical Management at Harvard Pilgrim.  “As our country grapples with critical issues like the cost of care and access to services, we must remember that 75% of employers’ health care costs are the result of lifestyle-driven disorders.  The evidence is clear, the single most important way we can improve our health is to improve the way we eat.”  In addition to offering the program to their own employees, Harvard Pilgrim insured employers, including John Hancock, The City of Boston, Draper Laboratory, and Abt Associates, as well as Roche Bros., are some of the companies offering the Full Yield Program to their employees.

As part of the Boston launch, a clinical trial will be conducted using confidential, detailed analyses of the biometric, health status and healthcare utilization data for the initial program population. The trial will be conducted using a matched control group with no exposure to either the wellness or the in‐store programs. The Full Yield is committed to rigorous analyses of program outcomes to provide evidence that a positive shift in diet quality and lifestyle choices yields strong health benefits and healthcare cost reduction.

The Full Yield™ Meals and Snacks are available at Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms stores, through the Roche Bros. e-commerce site for home delivery, and at select worksite cafeterias. All 18 Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms stores are featuring The Right to Eat™ Store Program and The Full Yield’s co-branded new line of fresh, natural meals and snacks.

“We see it in our stores every day.  It’s time for America to get healthy,” said Gary Pfeil, President of Roche Bros.  “The Right to Eat™ Store Program will cut through the noise and make it easier for our shoppers to make more informed choices about what they eat, and for our associates, The Full Yield is the most comprehensive and accessible program we’ve ever considered.”

Harvesting a full yield

The Full Yield, Inc., is committed to improving public health by making high-quality food, high-quality behavioral support, and high-quality education about food and health systemically sustainable. The company takes its name from farmers: if you start with high-quality seeds, protect your soil to maintain its inherent richness, water when necessary, and get lucky with the weather and the bugs, you will get a full yield—the greatest crop those seeds can produce.   Individuals can sign up for the program online or through participating employers.  Harvard Pilgrim accounts, please contact your account representative.  Non-Harvard Pilgrim employers, please contact The Full Yield directly at info@thefullyield.com or at 978.739.1500.  For further information visit The Full Yield at www.thefullyield.com.

Welcome To The World of Competitive Eating- North Shore Style!

Hello, my name is Joey Ciaramitaro, the creator of GoodMorningGloucester.org  The head cheese around this joint- editor extraordinaire Jack Morris has invited me to guest post so I thought I’d use this opportunity to pimp the next greatest event to hit the North Shore since the Last Good Morning Gloucester/Farm Bar and Grille Man vs Food Hot Wing Challenge which North Shore Mag correspondent Lauren Carelli covered so well in this post.

We are going to have one hell of a time at The Farm Bar and Grille Thursday night for the next leg of the Good Morning Gloucester man vs food challenge.   This is the first time we have held our man vs food challenge at the same venue for back to back events but the set-up and hospitality lent by the owners of The Farm Bar and Grille dictated that we just had to return for another go.

The sound system, the layout of the room and the crowd were over the top for our last event and this Thursday Feb 11th’s event promises more of the same excitement.

Come on by for the Good Morning Gloucester/Farm Bar and Grille Corndog Challenge this Thursday night and be amazed at the sheer will and fortitude these brave souls display while consuming copious amounts of meat on a stick covered with corn batter and fried up to a greasy hot mess.

Keeping the Ship Moving: Corrine Johnson Scholarship Fundraiser

Second annual event on March 26, 2010

The Corrine Johnson Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit organization that provides scholorships to local college-bound students who have suffered the loss of a parent, guardian or sibling.

Jimmy Johnson, a senior at Andover High School, lost his mother, Corinne Johnson last year.  The scholarship fund was formed by a friend of Corinne’s, Julie Gadziala, because she was so touched by not only Jimmy’s suffering, but several other kids who she spoke to who shared how hard it as for them.  When she began her research it was apparent that short of the American Cancer Society (if your parent died) and the Military (if your parent died) there were no scholarships that addressed children who had lost a family member.

A 18 karat white gold 1.5 Karat Diamond cluster ring with be raffled off.

Last year the scholarship fund gave out nine scholarships.

The schedule for the event is as follows:

6:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres and Cash Bar
7:00 PM Dinner Buffet and Live Auction featuring Coach Fazio & Coach “Pug”
9:30 PM Fashion show and Dancing featuring DJ – Ted Teichert

Tickets: Adults $75.00, Teens $50.00

Heart-Healthy Torch to Travel Local Communities During Winter Olympics

Anna Jaques Hospital and The Tannery Marketplace Light Torch for Heart Disease Awareness
Heart-Healthy Torch to Travel Local Communities During Winter Olympics

NEWBURYPORT, MA (February 3, 2010) — To help shed light on heart disease, the #1 killer of both men and women, Anna Jaques Hospital and The Tannery Marketplace are embarking on an important heart disease awareness and prevention public service campaign, involving the seven communities surrounding the hospital. From Saturday, February 13, through Saturday, February 27, heart disease survivors, elected officials, community volunteers, and professional runners will be carrying a special battery-operated Torch between Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, Georgetown, West Newbury, Salisbury, and Amesbury.

In keeping with the spirit of the Olympic athletes gearing up for the Gold in Vancouver, The Tannery Marketplace is introducing Lace Up & Shape Up, a weight-loss challenge for a healthier heart, to begin with the Healthy Heart Torch tour, and to end in early June, with weigh-ins and rewards along the way.

The Healthy Heart Torch tour commences at The Tannery Marketplace at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 13. The Torch will be presented to Mayor Holaday, who will proclaim the day “Healthy Heart Day” in Newburyport. She will have the honor of presenting the Torch to Michele DeMarco Wilkie, a two-time heart attack survivor at the young age of 33. Wilkie will pass the Torch to local long-distance runner Rick Bayko, who will carry it around Newburyport, and, along with Peter Shactman, physician assistant with Clipper Cardiology, to its first destination, Newbury Town Hall, on Tuesday, February 16. One of the final torchbearers will include Dr. Sunny Srivastava, a cardiologist with Pentucket Medical, who is training for the Boston Marathon. He will bring the Torch to the final town on the route, Amesbury, on Friday, February 26. The Torch will return to The Tannery Marketplace on Saturday, February 27, where residents can sign up for the Lace Up & Shape Up weight-loss challenge.

“While heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in America, lifestyle choices can greatly reduce the risk of cardiac arrest: Exercise, eat well, and don’t smoke. As with the Olympians, the Healthy Heart Torch is a symbol of life, celebration, and commitment. This is a joyful campaign about making a change for the better,” said Deborah Chiaravalloti, vice president of public relations and marketing for Anna Jaques Hospital. The Torch ceremony will be replicated in Newbury, Rowley, Georgetown, West Newbury, Salisbury, and Amesbury with civic leaders and heart disease survivors from each town. Residents who spot the Healthy Heart Torch en route are encouraged to post their sightings to twitter and facebook. Log onto www.ajh.org and click on the torch for important heart health information, and to link to the hospital’s social media sites.

Salem State College announces The Speaker Series Lineup for 2010

Ted Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Deepak Chopra to take the stage this year

The Salem State College Series announced today its speakers for the 2010 season. Disabilities advocate Ted Kennedy Jr. will open the Series on Tuesday, April 27. He will be followed on Thursday, September 23 by well-known mind-body health guru Dr. Deepak Chopra. This year represents the 28th season of Salem State’s nationally-acclaimed lecture series, which over its long history has brought U.S. presidents, Hollywood luminaries, animal activists, world leaders, and sports legends—among many others—to its North Shore stage.

As a disabilities advocate, Kennedy knows firsthand the struggles faced by those with physical challenges having lost a leg to bone cancer as a child. He has devoted much of his professional life and personal energy to furthering the causes of those with disabilities. Working with corporations, he has sought to expand job opportunities for the disabled and, as a teaching fellow on disability policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, he educates those in a position to effect change in the future. Additional passions are health care law, and addressing the environmental factors that lead to disease including pediatric lead poisoning, a leading cause of mental retardation. He currently serves as president of the Marwood Group, a health care-focused investment bank.

Acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest leaders in the field of mind body medicine, Deepak Chopra continues to transform our understanding of the meaning of health. Through his creation of the Chopra Center for Well Being in California in 1996, Chopra has expanded his healing approach using the integration of the best of western medicine with natural healing traditions. He has authored over 56 books, more than 100 audio, video and CD-ROM titles. He has regularly appeared on PBS and has been honored by the Toastmasters International with a Top Five Outstanding Speakers award.

The Presenting Sponsor for the 2010 Series is Giant Glass (1.800.54.GIANT) and the Featured Sponsor is Cranney Home Services cranneyhomeservices.com.

Subscription packages for this year’s Series are on sale now. Tickets for individual programs, if still available, go on sale February 22. To purchase tickets, or for further information, contact the Series box office at 978.542.7555, or visit www.salemstate.edu/series.
