About The Trustees & The Crane Estate
The stately seaside estate is owned and managed by The Trustees of Reservations, the nation’s oldest statewide land trust and conservation organization with 102 beautiful reservations located around the state; 20 of which are on Boston’s North Shore.  More than 250,000 people from New England and beyond visit the historic Crane Estate year-round to experience it’s unrivaled beauty, swim at it’s world-famous beach, paddle in it’s breathtaking waters and surrounding salt marsh, and enjoy it’s historic Great House, Inn, trails, and rolling lawns.

The Crane Estate encompasses more than 2,100 preserved acres that include: The Great House on Castle Hill, a National Historic Landmark; Crane Beach, a popular summer destination; The Inn at Castle Hill on The Crane Estate, a renowned B&B; and the Crane Wildlife Refuge, a unique natural treasure boasting many plant and animal species.

Chicago industrialist Richard T. Crane, Jr. first purchased the 2,100 acres that would become the Crane Estate in 1910.  Crane was captivated by the beautiful landscape, and over time worked with eight leading architects and landscape architects to shape his summer retreat.  In 1928, he crowned the estate with a grand 59-room, Stuart-style mansion, designed by the world- renowned David Adler. Nearly 100 years later, the Crane Estate plays a vital role in the local community and beyond as a place for year-round recreation, historic house tours, weddings, corporate and private parties, art show, summer concerts, lectures, movie filming, summer camp and public volunteer opportunities.

WHEN:
Sunday, May 2nd from 11:00AM – 5:00PM

WHY: The Open House thanks the public for its support of The Trustees’ ongoing restoration of the Castle Hill grounds, which in recent years has included historic plantings and restorations of the Italian Garden and the Great House forecourt. This February, The Trustees began the first phase of a 3-year renovation plan of the Grand Allee, the one-half mile long, undulating, grassy lawn framed by classical sculptures, Norway spruce, and pine hedgerows. Phase One of the project includes the removal of approximately 150 trees and the planting of 65 7-foot Norway spruce and White Pines.

The Allee Restoration was disrupted by the late February nor’easter that wreaked havoc on the North Shore. Castle Hill was hit particularly hard, with more than 300 trees coming down in the storm. Crews worked tirelessly to clean up the property and make it safe for the public. Much work, including replanting trees and stabilizing stripped embankments, remains. The Trustees invite the public to help by planting seedlings in celebration of spring at the May 2nd Open House.

The Trustees of Reservations Statewide
The Trustees are 100,000 people like you who love the outdoors and the distinctive charms of New England, and believe in celebrating and protecting them for current and future generations. Founded by open space visionary Charles Eliot in 1891, The Trustees “hold in trust,” and care for, 101 spectacular “reservations” located on 26,000 acres in 73 communities throughout Massachusetts. All reservations are open for the public to enjoy and range from working farms and historic homesteads – several of which are National Historic Landmarks – to formal gardens, barrier beaches, open meadows, woodland trails, mountain vistas, and a Gold LEED-certified green building in Leominster, the Doyle Center, which serves as a meeting space and gathering place for the conservation community.

Offering hundreds of programs, workshops, lectures, and activities throughout the year for all ages, most of which are free-of-charge or discounted for members, The Trustees are also a leader in the conservation movement and have served as a model for other land trusts nationally and internationally. With communities and conservation partners, The Trustees work to address and support important conservation issues and efforts across the Commonwealth. In addition, The Trustees hold conservation restrictions on more than 16,000 acres of privately owned land and, with our partners, have assisted in the protection of an additional 16,000 acres.

As land and special places continue to be developed and open space is being fragmented at a rapid pace across the Commonwealth, time is running out to save the best of Massachusetts’ landscapes and landmarks. To find out how you can protect or preserve a special place in your community, become a partner, request a speaker, and/or become a Trustee through your volunteer, donor or membership contributions, please call 781.784.0567, visit www.thetrustees.org , or email membership@ttor.org.

Become a Secret Food Critic

diningHave you ever dreamed of being a food critic?

-        Ever wanted to tell the chef how the dish should be cooked or the server what proper service REALLY looks like?
-        Do you know the difference between a Merlot and a Meritage; a flan and a panna cotta?
-        Do your friends ever tell you to just chill as you deconstruct the ingredients in a dish?
-        Have you caught a server BS-ing their way through a wine list or the ingredients in a dish?

If you said “yes” to all of the above, the North Shore Restaurant Group would like to talk to you about becoming a secret shopper at our restaurants. They’ll give you a $75 to go out to eat at one of our restaurants; in return you fill out a three page form about your experience. $75 won’t pay for the full fare, but heck you’re a foodie and you just want help in affording your exquisite taste.

If you go out as a secret shopper, they will ask you to  bring at least one friend and preferably another couple.  That will allow you to taste more items.  Plus, it adds to the fun of playing restaurant critic.

You will also be asked to fill out a questionnaire after your dining experience. They take these secret shopper reports VERY seriously.  It is the most powerful method they have found for finding faults in our food and service.  They discuss them with managers and chefs every week so it is important that you write up you experience the next morning while it is fresh in your mind.  It is also much more helpful to the managers to get the report in the same week that you dined so they can remember what the night was like.

If all this sounds like fun to you, email your smail address to Mark McDonough at northshorerestaurantgroup@gmail.com and he will have two gift certificates sent to your home address to go on two undercover missions.

Also please tell him your top three choices where you would like to eat:
1.     Lat 43 Restaurant http://www.latfortythree.com/
2.     Lat 43 Pub http://www.latfortythree.com/
3.      Alchemy  http://alchemybistro.com/

PRSSA Chapter at Salem State College to Raise Awareness for 2010 Census

The U.S. Census Urges All College Students to be counted. Salem State College PRSSA Chapter is spreading the awareness.

The US Census Bureau is on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of this year’s Census to young people, particularly college students nationwide. The Census distributes $400 billion each year, if college students aren’t counted, funds are not distributed effectively.

Salem State College’s chapter of the Public Relations Students Society of America (PRSSA) have partnered with the US Census Bureau to launch a campaign to inform students of the Census forms to be filled out in March. The Census wants to count all college students, regardless if they are residents on campus, or live in an off-campus apartment. As of February, PRSSA will be distributing T-shirts during ‘Census Days’ to emphasize the importance of the 2010 Census. We will also launch a social media campaign to target SSC students using Facebook and Twitter, follow us at @SSCPRSSA.

The decennial Census is intended to count each person in the United States every 10 years. Every student in the country, citizens and noncitizens alike, must be counted. What does this mean to college students? Students are at risk of losing potential financial aid, including Pell Grant funding, and other benefits because of under-reported numbers. The bigger the census count, the clearer the need for aid will be communicated to the federal government.

According to the official Census website, “Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.”

Students are directly affected by the federal funding distributed annually and the policies determining where that money goes. For example, the total capital available for student loans such as Pell Grants is based upon the census. If students go uncounted through their failure to complete the 2010 census form, then less government funding is available for funding necessities. With the economy in recession, students can not afford to have less money available to them for student loans and other financial aid.

1st Annual Matthew J. McCarthy Memorial Fund

In late December 2009, the Pentucket District was shattered when we found out about the tragic death of Matthew McCarthy, Captain of the Class of 2010 Pentucket High School Hockey Team. Matt passed away following a routine practice at the place he loved most, The Rink.  Matt’s passion for hockey and his zest for life touched the lives of so many in our community. It goes without saying how much one person can change the way we all think about our everyday living. Since the age of 13, Matt travelled all over New England and Canada playing in elite hockey programs, his dream was to play for a college that loved hockey.

In an effort to keep Matt’s memory alive, give back to our community and memorialize our Friend, Son, Brother and Leader – we have established the Matthew J. McCarthy Memorial Fund. This fund was created by friends and family to provide college scholarships to deserving young women and men entering their freshman year in college.

Singer, Will Dailey

nsam10_willdailey_1-copySoulful, Melodious, Poignant: words to describe music of another generation? Not when considering the very present and mindful songs of Will Dailey.

Dailey, 33, winner of the 2009 Boston Music Award for best singer/songwriter, has nurtured his passion for music from a young age. He grew up in and around the North Shore and moved to Andover when he was 12. He purchased his first guitar in Lowell and recognizes his stepfather, a local folk musician, as someone who helped shape his passion for music.

In 2005, Dailey was living in Los Angeles, but returned home following an unlucky bout with appendicitis. His luck turned when he went on to sign with his current label, CBS Records, in 2007. Over the years, Dailey has performed with his band, The Rivals, at venues nationwide, including memorable shows in San Francisco, Aspen, Tulsa, and St. Louis. Today, Dailey’s folk-pop sound has evolved and has been heard all over, even popping up on hit TV shows like “CSI Miami,” “Eli Stone,” and “The Hills.”

While Dailey is living his dream, he recognizes the inescapable stress associated with the demands of his career. “Sometimes I love that there are so many people involved now in my career,” says Dailey, “And sometimes I hate that.”

“Torrent” is Dailey’s latest album and this year, Dailey will be doing what he loves most: writing and recording. “I will try to over-stretch myself if I can,” says Dailey. “If you don’t ever stretch yourself, you’re not doing anything worthwhile.” willdailey.com. —Beth Daigle

A Rockport native and recent graduate of Columbia University, Evans performs regularly at Dog Bar and Alchemy Café and Bistro in Gloucester. myspace.com/marinaevans. 3. Crash Kings (Andover) With the ferocity of Rage Against the Machine and the dynamics of White Stripes, this trio is quickly developing a following—and they’re doing it without a guitar. Spring Fashion Spectacular

boxer4Knockout spring fashions shine the spotlight on Authur Ramalho’s West End Gym in Lowell.

“Building boys is better than mending men,” says The West End Gym’s owner, Arthur Ramalho. Ramalho got his start by training students how to box at a reform school. Later, he rented a boxing gym before it burned down. In 1995, he opened West End Gym in Lowell and since then, it has become a haven for young kids looking for a little guidance or for a friendly place to get fit. Ramalho, soft spoken and genuine, notes that the boys and girls, men and women, who come to his gym all become a part of the West End family. The respect and love that is shown to Ramalho is unabashed. Colleen Jones of Lowell recently enrolled her son, Reinaldo, for one year and says that the training has not only given him confidence, but has also allowed him to focus despite his diagnosis of severe ADHD. “Everyone here works as a team,” says Ramalho.

Ramahlo was kind enough to let Northshore into his gym for our Spring Fashion Spectacular. Check out the photo gallery below which also feature the styles of these North Shore stores:

The Ultimate Cocktail Guide to the North Shore

It’s no secret that we humans have a long-standing relationship with the mixed drink. The choices we make—rocks or salt, gin or vodka, lime wedge or twist of lemon—say something about who we are, and perhaps more accurately, who we’d like to be. But come the weekend (and yes, sometimes prior), the focus shifts from what should we drink to the more complex question: where should we drink? Lucky for you, we’ve got answers to both of these burning questions. We took to the streets to find the best of the best, and many miles and martinis later (research, people, research), we came up with plenty of options to fill up your itinerary. The North Shore bar scene has a mix of swanky clubs, exotic drinks, live music venues, and plenty more in between. And there’s no question that these muddled fruits and creative infusions will snap you into weekend mode. Be ready to mingle, sip, and shed responsibility at the door. Range Rover, Jonathan Nekoroski

nsam10_duenorth_1-copyHe’s seen high school football players streak across a busy range and had a fingernail whacked off by a rogue golf ball. But it’s all part of the job for Jonathan Nekoroski, 40, co-owner of Golf Country in Saugus (also in Middleton and South Easton). The legendary driving range, located on the northbound side of Rte. 1, was formerly known as Golf Town and was purchased by Nekoroski’s company in 2007. For a guy who grew up hitting golf balls on this fabled stretch of land in Saugus, nothing surprises him anymore. Just don’t ask him to cut the grass. Location: Beverly

Description: Push Up for Charity is not a competition, but an event to help raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. You don’t have to do thousands of pushups to make a difference.
All you do is as many pushups as you can in 90 seconds – just one time at our special event here in Beverly on Saturday, April 17th – and ask your friends, family and co-workers to donate fifty cents or one dollar for each pushup you do in those 90 seconds (the average donation certainly won’t break the bank for anyone…and every dollar helps).

Like the old chicken vs. the egg routine, a drive through the rolling countryside of Middleton might have you wonder what came first: the cow or the ice cream. If there’s one thing that this once-sleepy suburban town just 20 minutes north of Boston is known for, it’s the ice cream at Richardson’s that has kids and adults salivating all over the North Shore. NORTH SHORE MUSIC THEATRE ANNOUNCES 2010 MUSICAL SEASON!

Now open under new ownership!

Curtain up! Light the Lights! North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) is back with an exciting 2010 musical season filled with classic, contemporary and much-loved Broadway favorites. The new NSMT is under the leadership and ownership of Bill Hanney.  Experienced in theater management, Hanney is also the Owner/Producer of Theatre By The Sea in Rhode Island, a 500 seat summer theatre now in it’s 4th successful year under his leadership. Mr Hanney is also the owner/operator of Entertainment Cinemas, a chain of movie theatres throughout New England.

Long time Artistic Director of the Cape Playhouse, Evans Haile will be joining NSMT as Producing Artistic Director, bringing over 25 years of Professional Producing and Artistic experience to the North Shore. Celebrating more than 80 seasons, the Cape Playhouse is proud to be America’s Oldest Professional Summer Theatre

“I am honored to welcome audiences back to NSMT for my first season here in Beverly,” said Owner/Producer Hanney. “I am excited to be working with Evans Haile, and know that our team of experienced theatre professionals will operate NSMT with an efficient business model and a strong focus on entertainment and production values.”

“My goal for NSMT in 2010 is to create a season that celebrates musical theater and delivers the excellent quality and intimate atmosphere that audiences expect from NSMT,” revealed Hanney.  “While I am dedicated to maintaining a high level of artistic quality, I am equally dedicated to keeping a close eye on the business to ensure NSMT’s long term success. I want audiences to enjoy their experience at the new NSMT and come back for more!”

The 2010 Musical Season includes:
Gypsy July 6 – 25
Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat August 3 – 22
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels September 21 – October 10
A Chorus Line November 2 – 21
In addition to the 4 show subscription series, NSMT proudly announces the return of its Holiday Spectacular, North Shore Music Theatre’s time honored production of A Christmas Carol, directed by Jon Kimbell. Performances run December 3 – December 23.

The 2010 subscription musical season will be “coming up roses” when the classic Broadway musical, Gypsy takes the stage from July 6 – July 25. This musical fable, inspired by the life of the burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, is about the quintessential stage mother, Mamma Rose, a woman who pushes her two children into show business at any cost, to fulfill the dream of stardom she never achieved herself. It is a story of ambition, suppressed dreams, and sacrifice. The score is jam-packed with iconic show tunes including “Let Me Entertain You,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “All I Need is the Girl,” and “Together (Wherever We Go).”

The summer entertainment will continue with a spectacular production of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (running August 3 – August 22), Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s entertaining family musical retelling of the biblical story of Joseph, his devoted father, his jealous brothers, and his incredible series of adventures. Filled with eye-popping costumes and high energy dance numbers, the story is told through a variety of musical styles – everything from country to calypso to rock ‘n’ roll. The 2001 production of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was one of the most successful shows in NSMT history. This season’s production will feature a large children’s chorus made up of many local young performing artists.

Audiences will want to keep an eye on their wallets and jewelry when Dirty Rotten Scoundrels takes the stage from September 21 – October 10. Based on the hit 1988 movie starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, this hysterical musical follows two very different con artists working their schemes on the French Riviera. Their high society high jinks result in a friendly competition to see which one can swindle an innocent heiress out of her fortune. Audiences will roar with laughter when they see how far each one is willing to go to win the bet.

The 2010 Musical Season will conclude with the ultimate celebration of the American Musical, A Chorus Line, playing November 2 – November 21. Audiences will sit in on an audition and share in the story of 17 dancers competing for a few coveted spots in the chorus of a Broadway musical. Through the audition they bare their souls while sharing stories of their childhood, ambitions, fears, and experiences in show business. This groundbreaking Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is for anyone who has ever put it all on the line, whether it is for promotion, for attention, for approval, or for love.

Throughout 2010 NSMT looks forward to bringing celebrity concerts and exciting children’s programming. Please visit www.nsmt.org for news, and sign up for the email club to receive updates and announcements through the year.

The Marblehead Rotary Club Commemorate National Black History Month with a presentation by Dr. Edward Robinson

The Marblehead Rotary Club was honored to commemorate National Black History Month with a presentation on Thursday February 25, 2010 by Dr. Edward Robinson, a retired radiologist from Salem Hospital and a veteran Lt. Commander of the US Navy with combat service in Vietnam.  Dr. Robinson, who was born in Lynn, earned a B.A. from Yale University and a M. D. from the Tufts University School of Medicine, before he settled in to Marblehead with his family in 1964.  Dr. Robinson shared with the Rotarians a little Black History from the North Shore peppered with anecdotal stories about some of the challenges he had to overcome himself.

Earlier in February, the Marblehead Rotary Club hosted Elizabeth Macomber, Vice President for Philanthropy for the Hospice of the North Shore, who spoke about “end of life issues” and Sam Scott of the American Liver Foundation who gave valuable tips for sustainable liver health through a low-fat diet, moderate alcohol intake and exercise.

The Marblehead Rotary Club meets weekly on Thursdays for lunch at 12 p.m. at the Boston Yacht Club, 1 Front Street, Marblehead, MA  01945.
