A New England Tradition Continues with a Fresh New Take at Smolak Farms!

Smolak Farms Opens to the Public on May 7, 2010 with New Features!

The trees are pruned and the grounds have been prepped for the thousands that will soon roam the many acres of Smolak Farms in North Andover, MA. Opening to the public on Friday, May 7, 2010, for its 35th season, the farm can trace its history back some 300 years. Today, the 160 acre multipurpose property boasts 107 acres of preserved land that the Smolak family set aside in cooperation with the State of Massachusetts Agricultural Preservation Restriction Program, insuring that the area would forever remain open land, never to be developed.

“Smolak Farms means so many things…to so many people. Whether a family was introduced to the farm picking fruits in the Summer, picking pumpkins, taking hayrides and enjoying warm cider donuts in the Fall, or grabbing fresh baked pies, gingerbread houses and their Christmas trees during the holidays; we’ve been so lucky to be part of so many people’s traditions and memories,” said Michael Smolak, the farm’s owner and developer for some 35 years.

This year the farm will continue its traditional activities with their Pick Your Own(PYO) seasons for strawberries, raspberries, sweet purple & tart red cherries, blueberries, currants, gooseberries, heirloom tomatoes, peaches, apples, pumpkins, squash and Christmas trees, along with celebratory festivals to celebrate each crop (visit www.smolakfarms.com for PYO dates and schedules).

Customers can also look forward to the newly renovated Farm Stand, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, providing customers with not only fresh produce and daily-made baked goods and new lunch items, but Smolak’s world famous cider donuts, pies and gingerbread houses!(*Gingerbread houses handmade to order and available only  during the holiday season)

“This is my first year with the farm and I am extremely excited for the season,” said Smolak’s new Bakery Manager, Roberta Tarsia. Tarsia brings some 25+ years of experience, knowledge and innovation in the food & beverage industry as a baker, caterer and former Director of Catering at the Museum of Science and Marriott® Hotels, as well as, Food & Beverage Manager for Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. Customers can look forward to the farm stand providing all their traditional favorites, with the addition of new lunch items, a new “dining in the rough area complete with Smolak’s newly installed free Wi-Fi for those that may want to “work from home” for the day!

“With numerous PYO crops, a bakery and farm stand, an extensive play area for children and a petting zoo and greenhouse, you would think that would be enough to keep Smolak Farms busy. Not so explains the farm’s marketing director, “I think people know about our PYO seasons, various kids’ activities and our farm stand, but there’s so much more to experience at Smolak Farms. We do beautiful weddings and private events, corporate and team building outings, group tours and even have an educational nature and crafts program for children in the Summer,” said Kelley Small, Marketing Director for Smolak Farms.

With all that Smolak Farms has to offer it is the perfect place for children of all ages, or just those who are young at heart. Come experience a true New England tradition with the farm’s opening on Friday, May 7, 2010. In celebration of the farm’s opening free hay rides will be available all day as well as free bags of feed for the petting zoo for children 7 and under (limit on per family, first come first serve). Smolak’s world famous cider donuts will also be available for only 25 cents in celebration of the farm stand’s 25th anniversary!

Smolak Farms is always free to the public and 2010 hours of operations are as follows: Monday – Friday: 7:00AM-2:00PM, Saturday and Sundays: 7:00AM-5:00PM. For a complete list of activities please visit www.smolakfarms.com.

ROCKPORT MUSIC
June 10—July 18, 2010, 29th Season Preview
Founded in 1981 in the picturesque and historic Cape Ann seaport village of Rockport, Massachusetts, RockportMusic celebrates its 29th season this June 10—July 18, 2010 with the inauguration of its new home, the Shalin Liu Performance Center, and a summer chamber music season featuring stellar guest artists performing over 60 works in 20 concerts.

The 2010 season begins with the world premiere of Granite Coast, a piano trio commissioned by Rockport Music (RM) from the award winning Massachusetts-based composer Scott Wheeler, to mark the opening of the state-ofthe-art performance hall. It will be performed by RM artistic director/pianist David Deveau, violinist Bayla Keyes and cellist Michael Reynolds. Rounding out the program is Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll and Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The Grand Opening Week (June 10 –13) includes performances by a number of noted classical musicians, among them renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson in an all-Chopin solo recital; the acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet, and a special concert featuring music and the poetry of Shakespeare and Donne performed by the dynamic ensemble, Parthenia, “one of the brightest lights in New York’s early-music scene”.

With a long-standing tradition of presenting some of today’s foremost classical musicians and ensembles, as well as the rising stars of tomorrow, the Rockport Chamber Music Festival continues to introduce its audiences to world-renowned artists.

The 2010 season includes the Festival debuts of many exciting artists, including actor Paul Hecht, pianist Alpin Hong, violinist Midori, the Boston Brass, Boston Musica Viva, the male vocal ensemble Cantus, and Parthenia. Highlights of the 2010 Festival include:

June 18 – Boston Musica Viva, with guest soprano Pamela Dellal, make their debut in a concert of works by modern American composers.
June 19 – The Jupiter String Quartet in a program that includes Dvorak’s ever popular “American” quartet and Enescu’s Octet for Strings (with violinists Andrés Cárdenes & Joana Genova; violist Ariel Rudiakov and cellist Anne Martindale Williams).
June 25 – The Biava Quartet are joined by baritone Stephen Salters for Elena Ruehr’s Song of the Silkie (1999 RM
commission).
July 8 – Festival debut of the internationally acclaimed male vocal ensemble, Cantus.
July 10 – Violinists Todd Phillips (of the Orion String Quartet) and Carmit Zori (artistic director of the Brooklyn Chamber Music Society) perform Prokofiev’s Sonata for two violins in C, Op. 56.
July 11 – Pianist Marc-André Hamelin returns for the second season in a row in solo recital.
July 17 – Festival debut of world renowned violinist Midori. Her program includes works by Beethoven, Bloch, Brahms and Szymnowski.

Prelude Supper Lecture Series—June 11, 18, 25 and July 9 and 16. Held each Friday evening from 6—7:30 PM in the third floor Reception Hall of the Shalin Liu Performance Center before the 8 PM concert, the series includes a gourmet boxed dinner, lecture and Q & A. This season’s speakers include pianist Mia Chung, author/musicologist Elizabeth Seitz, composer Elena Ruehr, librettist Laura Harrington, French horn player/composer Michael Weinstein and composer Robert Bradshaw.

Free Family Concerts—Two Saturday morning concerts at 10 AM: June 19 with Manguito, the international Latin American ensemble, and June 26 with pianist Alpin Hong.

A major milestone in Rockport Chamber Music Festival’s history will be reached this season when it moves into its new home on June 10, 2010. Since 1981, performances have been graciously hosted by the historic Rockport Art Association. The growing popularity of the Festival, combined with the vision of the Artistic Director and Board of Trustees to expand artistic programming and build new audiences, led to the call for a larger venue. Rockport Music’s new home, the Shalin Liu Performance Center, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Main Street in Rockport,
will fulfill the organization’s vision to present an expanded season of top quality artistic programming to even more audiences, in a larger extraordinary venue with more capacity. Designed by Principals-in-Charge Alan Joslin and Deborah Epstein of Epstein Joslin Architects and acoustician R. Lawrence Kirkegaard, the new 330-seat performance center will feature a state-of-the-art concert hall with a two-story stage window with direct ocean views. Named in honor of the Massachusetts philanthropist who contributed the lead gift to Rockport Mucontinued…
sic’s $20 million campaign to build the new hall, the center replaces the 1870’s Haskins Building at 37 Main Street. It will be unique in New England, combining intimacy, extraordinary acoustical quality and a matchless natural setting.

Among the musical offerings now presented by Rockport Music in addition to the summer festival are a 3-concert fall-winter-spring Rockport Music Series; a 4-concert “Rockport Music Presents” summer non-classical concert series; 7 Free Community Concerts; music education outreach programs for children, prelude suppers, a spring lecture series, and a music book group. New this 2010 season, Rockport Music will also present open rehearsals, a master class, panel discussion/lunch and two adult lectures during the RCMF series.

Mclane Law Firm Absorbs Colucci Norman, The Business Law Firm On The North Shore

March 19, 2010, Manchester, NH and Woburn, Massachusetts – The McLane Law Firm with offices in Manchester, Portsmouth, and Concord, New Hampshire and Woburn, Massachusetts is pleased to announce that the firm has absorbed the Colucci Norman Law Firm, of Beverly, Massachusetts.

John Colucci, William Norman, Larry Plavnick, all corporate lawyers and Andrew Botti, a litigator, join McLane’s powerhouse business-focused firm of more than 90 attorneys, 44 of whom actively serve Massachusetts businesses in some capacity.

“Bringing the Colucci Norman team onboard delivers an opportunity for McLane to establish an immediate and trusted presence within the North Shore business community, a strategic goal we have been working towards for years,” says Steven Burke, managing director of the firm’s Boston area office in Woburn.

The addition of these attorneys and associate support staff to McLane’s Woburn, Massachusetts office necessitates the second office space expansion within a year at the TradeCenter.

“In a time when most Massachusetts firms are retracting, we’re happy to be bucking the trend. McLane has seen a revenue increase of more than 40% over the past 5 years,” says Burke. “It goes to show that the breadth and depth of McLane’s legal expertise and the fee structure we offer is really taking hold for Massachusetts businessowners who are looking to control costs.” He adds, “There is also the convenience factor. There are very few full-service firms that offer clients the convenience of being located outside of the city.”

The TradeCenter office is McLane’s fourth location, opened in October 2008.

About the McLane Law Firm

Founded in 1919, the McLane Law Firm is one of New England’s premier full-service law firms with offices in Manchester, Concord and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as Woburn, Massachusetts. Trustees of Reservations Announce Exciting Changes

The Trustees of Reservations Announce
Many Exciting Changes at Nation’s Oldest Farm
Located on Boston’s North Shore
Appleton Farms Receives Federal Stimulus Funds, Grants and Donations
for LEED-Certifiable Green Renovations for the “Old House,” which will become the Trustees’ New Center for Agriculture and the Environment

Beverly, MA – April 8, 2010 – As part of a deepening commitment to preserving the agricultural heritage of Massachusetts – and to demonstrating sustainable care and management of special places across the state – The Trustees of Reservations (The Trustees) announced exciting changes taking place at Appleton Farms, the oldest farm still in operation in America. Located in Hamilton and Ipswich, MA, Appleton Farms has secured a place in history and the community with its iconic farm, popular year-round programs for adults and children, and successful 500-shareholder Community Supported Agriculture program.

Now, The Trustees, who have owned and cared for Appleton Farms since 2000, are taking a leap toward a greener future with the renovation of the farm’s iconic 18th-century “Old House,” which will be home to The Trustees’ new Center for Agriculture and the Environment. The Center will become one of The Trustees’ primary focal points for engaging the public in how to live sustainably, save energy, support local agriculture, and conserve open space through year-round education and outreach. Thanks to generous community donations, grants, and federal stimulus funding, the Center for Agriculture and the Environment will aim to inspire and develop the next generation of citizen conservationists with tools to embrace sustainable living and face the ongoing challenges of global climate change.

Center for Agriculture and the Environment
The Center for Agriculture and the Environment will provide a public gateway to Appleton Farms. It will serve as a home base for all of the farm’s programs, where visitors will be able to learn more about the value that local farms and local food play in our overall health and economy through hands-on exhibits and photographs. Community members will be able to experience and learn first-hand about the benefits and production of sustainable food and the health advantages of grass-fed beef.  Visitors will learn that farms play a powerful role in protecting the natural and cultural heritage that defines so much of Massachusetts’ rural landscape.  Landowners will visit to [MSOffice1]       find out about best conservation practices and how to protect their land from developers. Farming enthusiasts and agricultural history buffs will be able to access a new research library containing the Appleton family’s collection of agricultural and equine books, paintings, and prints. The library will also provide access to the world’s largest electronic, searchable database offering information on land management and agricultural resources.

In addition, the Center will also serve as the base for Appleton Farms’ extensive community programs, offering meeting space for volunteers and training space for the Appleton Farms Apprentice program, which seeks to create the next generation of farmers schooled in sustainable growing practices. The Center will also serve as the home base for The Trustees farm-based education programs, which provide children, teens and adults with hands-on experience in farming while fostering a lifelong love for the environment. And, for those looking to go beyond sustainable agriculture practices and to learn more about how to make their entire farming operation or buildings and land carbon-neutral, the Center will serve as a key resource. It will provide a real-world demonstration of sustainable, commercial farming and land management practices, while also offering additional outreach programs and consultation services.

“We are excited to launch this new Center under the leadership of Wayne Castonguay, former Appleton Farms Manager and new Director of The Trustees Center for Agriculture and the Environment,” says Andrew Kendall, President of The Trustees of Reservations. “We look forward to working with Wayne to replicate Appleton Farms’ successful community-based programs on other Trustees agricultural properties across the state. With his expertise, we will work to engage more people in healthy and sustainable living and promote locally-grown food as we expand our farm-based education programs and carbon-neutral farming and land management practices.”

Currently, The Trustees own, operate, manage and/or lease 13 farms across the state and have protected more than 50 farms totaling 10,000 acres in the past decade.

Sustainable Farming Practices & Green-ovations
A key mission of Appleton Farms is to practice and encourage sustainable agriculture. The farm is also working to make its entire operation carbon-neutral through energy efficient building renovation projects. Some sustainable practices already being implemented at Appleton Farms include organic farming methods, grass-based livestock production, biomass heating, permanent increase of carbon storage in our soils, crop rotation and composting, and the use of post-consumer biodiesel and alternative vehicles and equipment.

In October, The Trustees embarked on a major project to convert 4,700 square feet of Appleton Farms’ historic Old House (including the original 1794 farmhouse and the 1872 west wing, which has been abandoned for 15 years) into a net-zero energy building (producing and using the same amount of energy). When complete, The Trustees hope the new Center for Agriculture and the Environment building will have earned Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. (LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a building-rating system established by the U.S. Green Building Council to measure the “greenness” of buildings.) The Trustees hope the Center will serve as a demonstration model for sustainable restoration. The green building will feature the following: deep energy retrofits including a highly efficient wood-fired boiler that will burn dead wood and harvested wood from the farm; heat recovery ventilation equipment that ensures excellent air quality; and rainwater harvesting techniques to provide captured rainwater for flushing toilets. The building will also feature insulation that exceeds current building codes.

The Trustees have contracted with Allsopp Design of Hamilton, and are currently implementing Phase I of the restoration, which includes planning, engineering, demolition, structural repairs, and exterior renovation of the Old House.

“The greenest building is the one that already exists,” says Wayne Castonguay, new Director of The Trustees Center for Agriculture and the Environment. “I00% of the demolition and construction waste from the renovation will be recycled or reused. For example, many old windows will be restored, and where necessary, new ones installed, illustrating the appropriate use of both in a renovation where energy efficiency and historic preservation are so critical. Unpainted plaster from the house interior will be used to enrich the soil around the farm, replacing the need for other fossil-fuel based fertilizers. And, lumber from the interior is being salvaged and reused as the building is revitalized.”

Grants, Donations and Stimulus Funds Making It All Possible
Appleton Farms is well on its way to reducing much of its carbon footprint.
The current renovations have been made possible by an incredible outpouring of support from 170 donors (totaling nearly $1,420,000); grants (totaling $29,750 for the dairy solar hot water heater and wood-fired boiler for the greenhouse) from the Department of Agricultural Resources; a grant (totaling $9,725) for the replacement outdoor wood boiler from the Department of Energy Resources; and federal stimulus funds (totaling $200,000) through a partnership with the Architectural Heritage Foundation, which awarded a total of $650,000 to two Trustees properties and one Historic New England property. To date, a total of $1.6 million of the $1.75 million project has been committed, including endowment funds.

“The Department of Energy Resources grant monies will enable Appleton Farms to conduct a ‘deep energy retrofit’ for the Old House, which will make the house 55% more energy efficient than today’s building code requires,” says Jim Younger, The Trustees’ Director for Structural Resources. Younger has also helped The Trustees apply for funding to install a solar panel array, which will generate enough electricity for the entire farming operation at Appleton Farms.

More About Appleton Farms
One of 20 Trustees reservations located on the North Shore, Appleton Farms is set on 1,000 acres and provides a rare glimpse into New England’s agricultural past with rolling grasslands, grazing livestock, stone walls, and historic farm buildings. A gift of Colonel Francis R. Appleton, Jr., and his wife Joan, Appleton Farms is the oldest continuously operating farm in the country, established and maintained by nine generations of the Appleton family.

In 1636, Samuel Appleton established the farm, growing vegetables, corn, and hay. Later generations of Appletons expanded into timber, beef, and dairy production, using progressive farming techniques beginning in 1868. By the late 19th century, the farm was primarily a summer country estate, complete with foxhunts and steeplechases, stone pinnacles from the Gore Hall Library at Harvard (alma mater to generations of Appletons), and the Grass Rides – five miles of trails and tree-lined grass avenues (called “rides”) built for horseback and carriage driving.

Today, The Trustees are carrying on the Appleton family’s farming traditions by offering hundreds of programs, tours, events, a farm field school, and fully operating dairy, beef and Community Supported Agriculture programs.

The Trustees of Reservations Statewide
The Trustees are 100,000 people like you who love the outdoors and the distinctive charms of New England, and believe in celebrating and protecting them for current and future generations. Founded by open space visionary Charles Eliot in 1891, The Trustees “hold in trust,” and care for, 101 beautiful “reservations” located on 26,000 acres in 73 communities throughout Massachusetts. All reservations are open for the public to enjoy and range from working farms and historic homesteads – several of which are National Historic Landmarks – to formal gardens, barrier beaches, open meadows, woodland trails, mountain vistas, and a Gold LEED-certified green building in Leominster, the Doyle Center, which serves as a meeting space and gathering place for the conservation community.

Offering hundreds of programs, workshops, lectures, and activities throughout the year for all ages, most of which are free-of-charge or discounted for members, The Trustees are also a leader in the conservation movement and have served as a model for other land trusts nationally and internationally. With communities and conservation partners, The Trustees work to address and support important conservation issues and efforts across the Commonwealth. In addition, The Trustees hold conservation restrictions on more than 16,000 acres of privately owned land and, with our partners, have assisted in the protection of an additional 16,000 acres.

As land and special places continue to be developed and open space is being fragmented at a rapid pace across the Commonwealth, time is running out to save the best of Massachusetts’ landscapes and landmarks. To find out how you can protect or preserve a special place in your community, become a partner, request a speaker, and/or become a Trustee through your volunteer, donor or membership contributions, please call 781.784.0567, visit www.thetrustees.org, or email membership@ttor.org.

Salem History Society: “Reign of Terror: The Salem Murder of 1830″

Title: Salem History Society: “Reign of Terror: The Salem Murder of 1830″
Location: Cornerstone Bookstore, 45 Lafayette St., Salem, Mass
Link out: Click here
Description: 180 years ago, on the night of April 6, 1830, in the quiet seaport of Salem, Capt. Joseph White, 82, one of the wealthiest men in America, was killed in his house on Essex Street. Nothing had been stolen, and there seemed to be no motive for the crime. For several weeks, Salem experienced a reign of terror: the killer or killers remained at large, despite the efforts of a “Committee of Vigilance” that tried to find them. White’s nephew and chief heir, the Hon. Stephen White, was framed for the murder, but at last the true killer and his sponsors were identified, and the whole nation was shocked at the revelations. Come to this meeting of the Salem History for an illustrated talk by historian Robert Booth and discussion about The White Murder and what it meant to Salem, in 1820 America’s richest place, per capita, and its 8th-largest population center, but by 1830 a town in which crime flourished and a flagging maritime commerce had tragic consequences worldwide. All are welcome at this free event!
