It takes more than hot buns to be dubbed the best bread bakery on the North Shore. At A & J King Artisan Bakers, Andy and Jackie raise artisan baking to a new level. The baguettes, ciabatta, and croissants are worth the extra carbs and the sticky buns are (dare we say?) almost orgasmic. » 48 Central St., Salem, 978-744-4881, ajkingbakery.com.

a&j king. indulge and you too will be a faithful follower. it’s the very best part of my week. taking a deep sniff of the aromatic air before entering my refuge, i can scarcely contain my drooling tastbuds as i scope out a table (getting harder and harder!) greet my favorite workstaff in all of massachusetts, and sit to revel in the first crunchy crispy divine bite that is a pan au chocolate. in a word: bliss.

I love A&J Kings in Salem, downtown Salem had been without a bakery since 2000. Glad they came and stayed, and love their Irish Soda bread, wish they would make it all year round!

I am an all-too-frequent visitor to A&J King in Salem. My 3-year-old asks for the croissants by name, and I love the olive bread, or really any bread.

Sorry, A&J but nobody beats Piro’s Bakery in Methuen, Mass. I haven’t tried A&J but I would be willing to take the pepsi challenge anyday. Piro’s is so delicious, I go there every single day on my way home from work to pick up fresh bread, because I can not get enough of it.

Alexandra’s in Gloucester is the best bakery on the North Shore. Artisans with the dough, this husband and wife team subscribe to the french philosophy of bread – keep it simple! They make a perfect baguette.
P.S. Perfect chocolate chip cookies, too. They only bake a few dozen of everything so get there early.
