‘Tis The Season For Ugly Sweaters

Jason Polonsky

Jason Polonsky with Kimbo

Winter is the season to pull out the fancy dresses, glitzy jewelry, and crisp suits.  With all of its joyous celebrations and over-the-top feasts, there is nothing quite like looking your absolute best during the holidays.

However, amidst all of the designer labels and posh outfits, there is one item that always manages to make an appearance, and, in some ways, is ranked above the rest. No matter how many generations have passed, or how evolved fashion has become (and whether we like it or not), the ugly holiday sweater has turned into a seasonal staple. One would even call it a must-have, as there are many parties that are solely dedicated to it.

We have all, at one time or another, worn an ugly sweater. They come in all sizes and feature an array of eyesores. From blinking lights to dancing reindeer atop a gingerbread house, there is nothing attractive about an ugly holiday sweater, other than the fact that everyone else is wearing one.

Although no one in the office is brave enough to sport the ugly annual pullover, the Northshore staff is brimming with seasonal spirit. This year we wanted readers to share our spirit in a unique way; we asked social followers to send us their best ugly holiday sweaters, and the results were impressive. When it came to naming the absolute ugliest, the one worn by Jason Polonsky from Peabody definitely deserved the distinction. Daringly dressed in a snowflake-covered turtleneck, holiday vest, and Santa hat (pictured here with Kimbo, his friendly Mastiff), more spirit couldn’t be squeezed into one picture, even if we tried.

Each entry was uniquely inspiring. From sequins to sewn on stockings to stuffed animals, the creativity was most impressive.  See more top entries below.

Fall Recipe Contest

Stumpf's Pumpkin Pasta Bake

Stumpf’s Pumpkin Pasta Bake

October 31 marked the ceremonious evening where ghouls, witches, werewolves, and all creatures in between ventured out to indulge in addictive sweet and savory treats…aka Halloween candy. It also marked the finale of Northshore‘s Fall Recipe Contest. Weeks prior, we asked our social media followers to submit their best fall recipes—those they make every holiday season to impress their family and friends. After receiving everyone’s submissions, the Northshore staff made, taste tested, debated, and voted on who sent us the best dish. It was hard work, but somebody had to do it! (One dish was so good that it was devoured in its entirety by just two people! We’re still giving them grief about it.) While all recipes were mouth watering and captured many of the signature seasonal tastes, only one could be the winner.

Christen Stumpf’s Pumpkin Pasta Bake (made by Associate Publisher Kelly Schetzle) stood out among the rest and was chosen as the crowd favorite. Pumpkin and pasta.—who knew? Christen’s dish features the warm taste of autumn and combines sweet and spicy elements. And let’s not forget the cheese! Italian sausage, pumpkin purée, and mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses are simply seasoned and topped with onion and spinach. While the veggie components will have your friends and family believing that this dish is somewhat “healthy,” there’s no mistaking that it’s good old-fashioned comfort food at heart. In a nod to traditional holiday meals, it was only natural that we should end our afternoon of taste testing with dessert, and Glenice Boyd’s Apple Pumpkin Tart with Pecans (baked by Production Manager Jessica Talbot) is definitely worthy of an honorable mention. Combining two powerhouse flavors into one dish is not an easy feat, but Boyd’s recipe, which was packed with cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg, and ginger, truly tickled our taste buds.
