Bridal Basics by Amy Brackman

Congratulations, you said “Yes” and are about to stroll down the path to happily ever after. The list of things to do seems to be growing faster than the speed of light, but pause, take a deep breath, and look in the mirror. This is your moment to shine. Now, exhale and read on to discover five important steps to making sure you are simply stunning on your wedding day.

Design a skin care plan

There are fabulous primers, concealers, and foundations on the market today, but the best canvas for make up is flawless skin. Create a plan six months to a year in advance of the big day and get your skin in optimum condition. Visit your esthetician for professional treatment and ask her/him to help make your face camera ready.  Regular skin care is a delicious way to pamper yourself and create a gorgeous glowing complexion.

Book a make up artist

If you know that you are going to use the services of a make up artist, be sure to book him/her once you set the wedding day date. Brides who wait until the last minute may be disappointed, as popular make up artists are booked far in advance; it’s a good idea to plan ahead.

Create a vision board of looks you like

The web is a virtual treasure chest full of great ideas for hair and make up. Whether your look is red-carpet glam or laid back and natural, you can find endless ideas to borrow. Create a vision board of looks you love to share with your make up artist and bridesmaids.

Make a make up checklist

Even if you have your make up done professionally, you should bring a bag of basics for touch ups on the big day. The short list includes: lip gloss, cream blush, concealer, eyeliner and, waterproof mascara.

Get a good night’s sleep

Getting a solid night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do before your wedding. Nature has a wonderful way of magically replenishing your body to look and feel its best. Take a long hot bath, drench your skin in your favorite luxurious body lotion, put on your most comfortable cotton pajamas, and enjoy forty or fifty winks.

Simple Steps to Dewy and Divine Skin

Simple Steps to Dewy and Divine Skin by Amy Brackman

As we flip the calendar to the month of January, the change of season coupled with the flip of the heat switch presents challenges to keep skin hydrated. Looking to nurture your skin and get a glow this winter? Remember these simple skin solutions:

  • Cleanse – Always begin and end the day with a clean face. Whether you are treating your skin to a sumptuous serum treatment before applying moisturizer and make up or layering your nighttime serums and creams, you must begin with pure skin.
  • Exfoliate – Dead skin is not in. Make sure to exfoliate a couple of times each week to remove dead skin. Layering products on dead skin makes no sense as they will not penetrate and are merely superficial.
  • Tone - Refreshing your skin with a nice toner helps maintain its ph balance as well as providing an extra layer of protection and helps keep your skin moisturized.
  • Hydrate - Now that the heat is turned up and the winds are kicking in, it is more important to make sure you are not only using serums, balms, and moisturizers, but also drinking more water. Hydrating improves hyaluronic acid, which gives your skin an added boost.
  • Protect – Yes, the sun is higher in the sky and you are not spending endless hours outdoors, but it is still essential to protect your skin from the sun. A great way to easily protect yourself is with a moisturizer that already has SPF protection built it.

Sweat Equity

Stay active even as the weather cools this season with one of these unique indoor fitness offerings on the North Shore. By Debbie Strong

When the air turns cold and the comfort food cravings start calling, it’s all the more important to find new and interesting reasons to get off the couch and get moving. But are you up to date on what’s happening in the fitness world, or at least on the North Shore? Whether you’re bored by your regular workout routine, coming back to exercise after an extended hiatus, or looking to keep your weight (and motivation!) in check through the upcoming holiday season, this list is for you. Use it to navigate the latest fitness trends and find the right one for you— then grab a friend and get moving.

Bounce Away Pounds

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the JCC of the North Shore in Marblehead has long been offering members and guests a large variety of cutting-edge fitness classes, including Piloxing, Turbo-Kick, BodyPump, and Aquaerobics. New this year is Urban Rebounding, a low- impact cardio class that lets you shake up your regular workout routine with something playful and fun. Taught entirely on small trampolines and set to high-energy music, a rebounding workout gets your heart rate up and pushes your muscles to fatigue—but has a low risk of injury because the bounce of the trampoline helps absorb the impact on your knees and joints. Don’t say we didn’t warn you: After an hour of jumping and bouncing your way slim, the walk to your car will feel a bit strange—and a lot less fun than class. jccns.org.

Get Sexy (and Sweaty)

A favorite saying at North Shore Pole Fitness in Andover is “Never trashy, always classy, but a little nasty!” which should give you an idea of the spirit and sauciness you’ll find here. Taught by classically trained professional dancers, classes start off with a 15-minute warm-up before you take to the pole to attempt basic spins, climbing techniques, and sultry dance transitions, all set to slow, jazzy hip-hop music (and the requisite sounds of your classmates giggling and cheering each other on, of course!). The studio, the first of its kind on the North Shore, prides itself on being very beginner-friendly but offers advanced classes, chair dance, flexibility training, and even a super-fun Sexy Stiletto workout for women; private and bachelorette party- style group sessions are also available. Hint: Wear shorts, bring a yoga mat, and leave the jewelry (especially rings) at home. You’ll leave a little less shy, a lot more toned, and definitely ready for a repeat visit. northshorepolefitness.com.

Join the (Fitness) Troops

Never underestimate the power of a dedicated, motivated group of people, especially when it comes to losing weight. At Millions of Muscles Bootcamp in Revere and now Peabody, founder Jodi Reath is helping men and women with pounds to lose gain a fresh start, a healthy perspective on exercise and food, and most importantly, new friends. What started as a low-key summer beach bootcamp in her hometown has evolved into a year-round, full-fledged fitness community with two locations. Clients use Millions of Muscles’s Facebook pageto share recipes, applaud others’ successes, and urge one other to attend Reath’s bootcamp-style sessions, offered multiple times daily and held indoors from October through April.  “The best part about it is the nonstop support,” says Reath, who employs a handful of trainers and offers one-on-one goal-setting, nutrition guidance, fitness-themed events, contests, and even social outings for her clients. “It really is a fitness family.” millionsofmuscles.com.

Hit the Barre

If you’ve heard of the ballet barre fitness craze sweeping LA and NYC but didn’t think you could find it on the North Shore, think again. After years of professional dancing and teaching, Danvers resident and former New England Patriots cheerleader Tanya Croteau launched her own unique take on the trend, known as barre n9ne, in 2010. Borrowing elements of dance, Pilates, and light resistance training, barre n9ne helps tone and slim your body by targeting smaller, lesser-used muscles in the arms, legs (upper-inner thigh toning leg series, anyone?), backside, and abs, helping sculpt the long, lean body of a ballerina. Classes are small and have an intimate feel, and they’re taught by trim, toned, and upbeat instructors who bust out the latest pop music to keep participants moving. Have a wedding or special event in your future? The studio offers 60-day group challenges, which include nutrition guidance, weigh-ins, before and after pictures, and more; you can also take advantage of monthly Zumba parties and the new “baby barre” class for new mommies. Locations in Danvers and Andover. barren9ne.com.

Play Like a Kid Again

Chances are that at some point in your youth, you played with a hula hoop—that simple but highly addictive ring that became wildly popular in the 1950s. But these days at the Cape Ann YMCA in Gloucester, Hooping class has members of all ages winding and grinding their way to a better body using hoops that are a bit bigger and heavier than the kid-sized version, but just as fun. Besides being a great fat-burning, sweat-inducing cardiovascular exercise, hooping helps strengthen your core and works the arms, neck, hands, and legs, as you move the spinning hoop around your body under the direction of instructor Blake Cala. “It’s all done to the beat of the music,” says Cala, who has been hoop dancing for 12 years, “so you’ll improve your coordination, plus learn a really unique skill!” Beyond hooping, the YMCA offers tribal belly dancing, family Zumba, and more. northshoreymca.org.

Get Coached Like an Athlete

Perfect for people who want a little extra push, CrossFit Full Potential in Newburyport is a constantly varied, high-intensity workout that helps clients get fit, learn weight-lifting skills, and track their own progress under the watchful eye of a seasoned coach. Owner Dan Vadala treats his clients like athletes in training as he (or one of his coaches) helps them build endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, balance, and power through one-on-one training or team-style group sessions. “We’ve trained every imaginable age and demographic, from middle school to elderly, from professional athlete to morbidly obese,” says Vadala. “We can work with anyone who walks in the door.” For men and women in all shapes and sizes, this pick’s a winner. crossfitfullpotential.com.

“Hang” Out, and Get FitYoga Sakti in Salem

Developed by U.S. Navy SEALs, TRX Suspension Training is a unique way to strengthen and tighten your muscles using gravity and your own body’s weight. If it sounds extreme or intense, don’t be intimidated: “TRX” stands for “Total Body Resistance Exercise” and describes a simple apparatus of two nylon straps with handles and foot cradles, used to perform basic movements that use many joints and muscles at once—just as most of our everyday movements (think about bending over to pick up your keys) use multiple body parts at the same time. Most exercises are done standing up, helping improve core strength and posture, and all can be tailored to any fitness level by altering the distance between the exerciser and the anchor point of the TRX. At Yoga Satki in Salem, choose anything from beginner TRX to high-intensity training—or one of more than 30 different yoga classes, a unique yoga wall workout, and more. yogasatki.com.

Feel the Beat

Are you one who likes to march to the beat of your own drum? Then Drums Alive or Disco Drums, both offered at boutique fitness club Everyday Fitness for Everyday Women in Peabody, are for you. Both workouts use drumsticks and exercise balls and combine rhythmic movement with a core and lower-body component, set to pulsating, upbeat music. “It’s ideal for every fitness level because it’s easy to learn, and it’s fun,” says co-owners and instructors Jill Martin and Diane Moore, who aim to “dispel the myth that exercise has to be a chore.” That’s why their small (10 to 15 people) class sizes allow for plenty of individual instruction and a stress-free, welcoming atmosphere. efpeabody.com.

Join a Zumba Party

If you’ve ever gone out dancing all night with friends, you’re no stranger to the exhilarating rush provided by this much- loved fitness phenomenon that’s sweeping the globe. Known as the “exercise in disguise,” Zumba is simply a Latin-inspired dance class that lets students shake, pump, shimmy, and strut their way through easy-to-follow, repetitive combinations for an hour or longer of calorie-blasting fun. “I know many people get scared off thinking that it’s a ‘dance’ class, but the choreography is actually very minimal, and it’s truly a party,” says Stefanie Sweeney, who’s earned a loyal North Shore following due to her high-energy demeanor and varied music choices—think merengue, Bollywood, Reggaeton, and even country dance—during every class. “It’s the only class I’ve ever taken or taught where people are truly bummed out when the hour ends!” Available at multiple fitness facilities. stefaniesweeney.zumba.com.

Sweat It Out

Stressed, sluggish, or just plain need a break? Revitalize your body and refresh your soul with a class at Bikram Yoga Danvers, where you’ll perform a series of 26 Hatha Yoga postures and two breathing exercises in a heated room for 90 minutes. If you’ve tried Bikram before, you’ll appreciate this facility’s clean, airy feel and its serene, skillful instruc- tors, led by director and founder Shannon Engelhardt. If you’re new to Bikram, be sure to bring a towel and plenty of water and know that you’ll be drenched in sweat – but feeling lighter, brighter, and plenty accomplished upon leaving the room. Here, there’s no such thing as a bad workout. (Plus, new students get a 10-day unlimited class pass for $20.) bikramyogadanvers.com.

Able Condition

Told by peers and pros for years that he wasn’t cut out for professional sports, North Shore native and former Redskins player Pat Downey—founder of Gridiron Training—pours his blood, sweat, and tears into helping promising area athletes make the grade. By Noah Leavitt

When you walk into Gridiron Training, in Woburn, you’ll forget everything you thought you knew about the typical gym.

First, you’ll spot the giant skull and crossbones on the floor right above the slogan “Turning athletes into freaks.” Then, you’ll see the pitch-black turf littered with 400-pound truck tires, heavy chains, and ropes pulled right off of Navy ships.

On this weeknight, the gym isn’t filled with hulking football players. It’s filled with regular adults—moms pushing weighted sleds up and down the turf; a man in his 50s lugging sandbags. It’s not what you would expect, but it’s exactly the type of workout that hundreds of North Shore athletes are seeking out. And it’s just the type of gym that Pat Downey wanted to create.

Downey, a Swampscott resident, married father of three, and former NFL player, set out to create a place that would take clients outside of their comfort zones. “It’s not cookie-cutter,” he says. “I cater to serious, committed athletes who want to be the best they can be.”  Gridiron is also a place that’s uniquely rooted in the North Shore, and it could be a game-changer for area  athletes—specifically, football players.

John Bugli, a Newburyport native and assistant coach at Gridiron, explains that gyms like this one exist everywhere in football powerhouse states, like Texas and Florida. “A place like this is going to help elevate the level of athletes in this area,” he says.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the gym is always bursting with positive energy. You realize this the second you meet Downey. The former offensive lineman stands 6-feet, 3-inches tall and greets everyone he meets with a hug and a smile.

Downey needed this kind attitude along his journey to this spot. He’ll be the first to admit that he wasn’t the fastest or the strongest. Yet he starred at Beverly High School and Worcester Academy before earning a full scholarship to UNH. Downey then parlayed that into an NFL career that included stops with the Patriots, Chargers, Redskins, and Falcons. In between, there were stints with NFL Europe and in the Arena Football League (AFL). Downey battled for every roster spot he earned.

In 2003, Downey reached his pinnacle by making the Redskins’ active roster. It was an accomplishment many said would never happen, and when it did, its meaning wasn’t lost on him. “I saw my Redskins jersey and my name in the game program, and I took the program into the bathroom and started crying like a baby,” Downey says.

Downey has made it his mission to ensure that no one hears that kind of message from him. He likes to find  “diamonds in the rough” and help them reach their full potential. It’s a role he fell in love with as soon as his playing days ended.

Downey was mowing his lawn the day rocker Jon Bon Jovi called. At the time, Downey had left football and was working in medical sales. Bon Jovi—a majority owner of the AFL’s Philadelphia Soul—was now offering Downey a path back to the game he loved, as one of the team’s assistant head coaches. The position allowed Downey to offer contracts to players like him—the “bubble guys” (players who are on the cusp of being picked up by a professional team). But Downey wanted a different challenge—taking those bubble guys and making them faster, stronger, more agile. Downey got that chance when he became the strength and conditioning coach for the Soul in 2008.

The bubble burst after a year, when the AFL suspended its operations. So, in 2009, Downey found himself out of football once again. But it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Downey turned that adversity into a positive situation.

Downey was driving through Swampscott with his family on July 4th, 2009, when he heard someone shout “P-Diddy!”—a nickname Downey had somehow earned. It was Brian Palangi, a former Swampscott High School athlete and current Northern Iowa offensive lineman. He wanted Downey to train him, and Downey agreed.

He took Palangi to Bishop Fenwick High School and put the 6-foot, 5-inch, 310-pound lineman through “the greatest workout of his life.” Word spread from there. Soon, Downey was training several dozen athletes for free before his wife, Andrea, suggested that he make some money for his work.

A few weeks later, Gridiron Training launched at the site of North Shore Crossfit in Danvers. Owner Dave Picardi gave Downey space to train about 30 athletes. A year later, that number ballooned to 300, and Downey found himself in need of his own space. He now has more than 500 patrons.

It’s called a gym, but more accurately, Gridiron is a warehouse filled with tools. That’s precisely what Downey wanted—a no-nonsense place where athletes could work out, make noise, and get stronger. “It’s the Rocky mentality,” says Steve Cardillo, a friend of Downey who is an author and the maker of popular weight-lifting belts. “It shows that you don’t need all that fancy stuff.”

At Gridiron, it’s about more than just “stuff.” Here, there’s a different kind of attitude, which is summed up by some of the women who have embraced Gridiron.

“When [Pat] says, ‘How are you?’ he really cares.” That’s how Molly Foster sums up Downey’s personality. Foster is a mother of two from Peabody. She’s also a teacher and a cancer survivor. The lifelong athlete started working with Downey last year after a battle with breast cancer. She’s grown stronger and faster, but has taken from her workouts with Downey more than just improved physical condition— she’s found self-confidence.

The same is true for Anna Moulton, a senior three-sport star at Bishop Fenwick High School. Like Foster, Moulton battled cancer. But, last year, she found herself flipping tires, lifting chains, and hauling ship ropes in a gym filled with guys. “At first, I was nervous,” Moulton says. “But Pat is such a welcoming person. It helped boost my self-confidence.”

Then, there’s Rebecca Bucklin from Swampscott, who makes the drive to Woburn just to train with Downey. She calls his energy “infectious.” Within two weeks, Bucklin started seeing the results, including new definition in her arms and legs. “It’s not like the typical gym setting,” she says. “It makes me want to work out even when I don’t really want to work out.’’

That’s why people keep coming back—for the results. Downey treats exercise like a science. Each new athlete undergoes an evaluation of his or her strength, speed, and agility. Then, Downey and his coaches design a program that aims to unlock the athlete’s full potential. Downey likes to focus on two concepts: what he calls “posterior chain development” and “shocking the central nervous system.” In layman’s terms, Downey and his coaches want to strengthen your back while never letting your body relax.

Dave Bellmont is Gridiron’s assistant director of strength and conditioning, and he tries to break the normal routine of most athletes. “The goal is to put yourself outside your comfort zone. Over the course of a year, a single workout won’t be repeated.” For clients, the training doesn’t end when they stop sweating. Each athlete gets free protein shakes and supplements courtesy of Downey’s sponsors, American Nutrition Company in Everett and MET-RX.

The plan works. In addition to local clients, Downey has become one of the go-to trainers for NFL agents who hope to get their clients drafted. He helped train former Merrimack College star Shawn Loiseau for the NFL Combine—the yearly test of a player’s strength, speed, and quickness—helping the linebacker earn a spot in training camp with the Texans.

Downey has earned respect at every level—from NFL coaches to the parents of young kids. Dr. Dwight DeGeorge of Lynnfield sent two of his children to train with Downey, explaining that “[Downey] teaches old-world ethics—how to respect your elders and to be accountable for your actions.” DeGeorge also marvels at Downey’s ability to reach everyone he teaches. “He really challenges every child. He has a God-given talent to be able to point out a flaw and, without being negative, turn it into strength for that child.”

Downey commands attention because he’s achieved what his athlete clients dream of. NFL contracts hang on a wall at Gridiron as motivation. In his book, How a Champion is Made, author Steve Cardillo dedicated a full chapter to Downey. Cardillo says, “[Downey] has an ability to explain things to the kids through his own experiences. They said he couldn’t do it, and he did it.”

Back at the entrance to Gridiron, a giant metal sign bears the slogan “Train like a champion today.” Every athlete who walks in here knows to touch the giant metal panel—a small gesture to build camaraderie. After all, everyone is there for the same reasons—to be challenged and to grow stronger. They’ve put their faith in Pat Downey, and he refuses to let them fail. Unlimited classes at Gridiron Training can run up to $100 a month, while one-hour private training sessions range from $75 to $125 apiece. Downey offers high school athletes a 10-week training program starting at $495. Gridirontrainingathletics.com.

Power Yoga with Marsha Therese Danzig

Marsha Therese Danzig, founder of Color Me Yoga

Wenham’s Marsha Therese Danzig helps her pupils find life’s deeper meaning through yoga. By Debbie Strong

A devoted yoga teacher living and working on the North Shore may not seem so out of the ordinary. But a yoga teacher who has beaten two bouts of a rare bone cancer, had a leg partially amputated, survived kidney failure and a transplant—and later built one of the first and largest children’s yoga training programs in the country, then authored a book? Now that’s an extraordinary story.

“I’ve been at death’s door so many times,” says Marsha Therese Danzig. “And I didn’t die.” Instead, she channeled those personal hardships, such as getting her left lower leg amputated at age 13, into a deep, guiding belief that “all of us, no matter our circumstances, has a right to feel joy and experience joy.” That belief became the basis of her work with kids and yoga, and led to her recently publishing Fierce Joy, the inspirational story of her life.

“People have been telling me for a long time that I should write a book,” says Danzig, who has created numerous children’s books and yoga products. Fierce Joy (published in April of this year) allowed her to finally tell her own story, which is ultimately a message about finding hope and claiming one’s own happiness, even in the face of struggle. “It’s about asking yourself, ‘What is the meaning of my life? How can I give it meaning?’ I think that’s a pretty universal question.”

A lifelong dance enthusiast, Danzig has been a resident of Wenham since 1999, the same year she began teaching yoga classes to kids. By 2002—while living on dialysis due to kidney failure from the multiple treatments she had undergone as a child to address Ewing’s sarcoma, a deadly form of bone cancer—she had founded Color Me Yoga, a training workshop for professionals who work with kids ages three to 11, and one of the first children’s yoga training programs in the U.S.

Through Color Me Yoga, Danzig has trained hundreds of kids and adults who work with children from around the country. She’s got no plans to stop there, either. From launching a new yoga program for amputees to speaking at a conference for pediatric nurses to leading yoga-based workshops in Chicago, Ohio, and Georgia this year, Danzig is using her practice of yoga to see the world.

“At this stage of my life, I have lived in so many grand places. I went to Spain in June, where I learned flamenco. We had a blast,” says Danzig, who plans to go back to Spain soon. “I love the vitality and energy there, and the celebration of life.” colormeyoga.com

Water Wisdom

Water World: We are made up of 80% water

We are made up of 80% water. Research has established that water is an essential nutrient that nourishes our body like a river.   A river remains clean and pure when it is flowing.  When water becomes stagnant it putrefies.  Water needs to be constantly in motion like the circulation of blood. When blood becomes thick and stagnant, our body begins to build toxins and our brain function is compromised.

Two facts to keep in our awareness, especially in the Summer time are: water is an essential nutrient and caffeine is a diuretic.  We can lose up to three cups of water after drinking only one cup of any caffeinated beverage. The increase of hot temperatures speeds up our mineral loss along with our chances of dehydration.

Dehydration depletes the body of water needed for perspiring and thickens the blood, requiring more pressure to pump it through the body, thus straining the heart and blood vessels. As blood goes to the external surface of the body, less goes to the muscles, the brain, and other organs. With less blood flow we have muscle cramps, hazy concentration and irritability.

We tend to overlook the signs of dehydration. Our brain doesn’t signal us immediately that we are dehydrated. By the time we feel thirst it is often too late. We are already experiencing the subtle mood changes/ being cranky, lack of concentration and fatigue. Being dehydrated leads to headaches, constipation and acid reflux. Most imbalances may be cured with a few more glasses of water. Just for today…try for to be mindful of your water intake.

There is more to water than just sipping another eight ounces. On a molecular level there is evidence that demonstrates the power or word or thought on water. An example can be as simple as placing the word “gratitude” on your water bottle. “The Hidden Messages of Water” by Masaru Emoto, delivers a magnificent message of how water holds messages from our word, to our environment and, on a deeper level the life that has traveled through water such as our magnificent oceans. Dr. Emoto used high speed photography to capture crystals formed in frozen water revealing the specific changes that occur when concentrated thoughts or words are placed on water and are directed toward the water. He found that water from clear springs exposed to loving words show brilliant complex and colorful snowflake patters. In contrast to polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, formed incomplete asymmetrical patterns. Stop for a moment and take into our consciousness that the power of word has an impact on water, the implications of his research gives us insight on how we may positively influence our own personal health.

Water is the essential key to uncovering the mysteries of the universe.

Tap Into Your Garden to Stay Healthy This Summer

Summer is here! We are inundated with sunscreen information and this is the perfect time to shine a light on what is available to us to keep us safe.  An untapped source of protection; our gardens! They are a treasure chest of wonderful foods that contain an ingredient called “plant carotenoids” or “phyto-chemicals”. These colorful foods contain a secret to our health by preventing disease and repairing our bodies from harmful invaders. These plant carotenoids are naturally found in our fruits and veggies which give us a boost of protection by the same process that they protect themselves!  They are able to shield themselves by absorbing harmful oxidative chemicals that are produced during photosynthesis. You may have heard of antioxidants and these gems are the built in protection of our colorful foods. Many studies have consistently shown that eating carotenoid-rich foods protect us against damage from ultraviolet irradiation (UVA & UVB) from the sun. Sun damage causes not only burning but also premature ageing of the skin, wrinkles, hyper pigment and skin cancer. A diet rich in lycopene and high in antioxidants has been found to significantly lower the risk of burns to the skin. Picking fresh produce for you and your children has a remarkable benefit for your skin and your health.

Skin cancer is on the rise, along with Vitamin D levels being the lowest we have seen in decades. Healthy sun exposure assists our bodies in the production of vitamin D and strengthens our immune system. Knowing some proactive measures to keep us safe is detrimental. When we look at the impact of the skin from sun exposure compared between a person who has a diet that has an abundance of fresh colorful fruit and veggies, versus a person that has a diet that is filled with junk food, we see that the skin is less reactive with redness, couperose and hyper pigment in the person with a whole food diet.

  1. Fill your pantry with the following and consume them a regular basis. The more often you have these gems in your diet the better results you will see in your skin. Your intake needs to be consistent to see remarkable results. Tomatoes (lycopene) wild yam (phyto-chemicals beta carotene), red peppers, orange peppers, mangoes, carrots (alpha and beta carotene), pumpkin, kale (lutein and zeaxanthin), spinach (lutein), rich leafy greens
  2. Investigate your sunscreen and choose a lower SPF and apply more frequently.

Many sunscreens contain harsh chemicals to allow them last for hours or to be waterproof. The higher the SPF the more chemicals are in the product. This may be a matter of opinion but there is supportive data to validate the overuse of chemicals in our sunscreen products may cause other health risks.

  1. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen and sunglasses in indirect sunlight will assist your body’s production of the vital Vitamin D that we need to support our immune function

Wellness is More Than Eating Healthy and Exercise

We hear so many stories about people who we look at with reverence and admiration that they are the epitome of health. Maybe they are eating a vegan diet and they run 3 to 5 times a week and they look great, and then we hear they suddenly have had a fatal heart attack. We think to ourselves, goodness what did they not do, or like many other people, we sarcastically think to ourselves…well that is another reason for me not to eat healthy or exercise. By Dawn Tardif

There are many factors that play an intricate part to our wellness and while these two components are important, we also need to realize that there are many other factors. I will mention two for us to think about today. One is emotions, how we handle our emotions, this is detrimental to our well being, and the other is quieting our mind. You may know someone who you may see that their mind is constantly “on” or you may know someone that they tell you they are okay and that they are not angry about a situation, but you can see it, you can feel it when you are around them, they still are holding onto disappointment or being misled or worse yet being betrayed. These two areas of our lives, are an area where we have not been schooled as to how to take care of what we are feeling , nor have we been taught how to quiet our mind.

Just for a moment, I would like you to stop reading, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Take a deep breath deep down into your belly, feel your belly rise, feel the air fill your lungs and feel your belly rise as if you are filing up empty space within your body. As you exhale slowly, allow your breath to gently pass through your lips feeling the warmth of the air being exhaled. Take a moment and repeat three times.

Today take time to write down how you have been feeling. Just three sentences, what you feel in your heart that you may need to mend to feel light, joyful and filled with peace. Be honest with yourself. There is no judgment, now one is going to read it, just you.

Now…just for today, carry this thought with you, I move through my day with grace and ease feeling peace-filled. And let me know…how you are feeling.

Senior Living

There are many components in planning for retirement and senior living. There are financial aspects to analyze, living arrangements to consider, and home and health care services to examine. We talked to a variety of specialists on the North Shore to see what makes their services a natural fit.

Grace House of Windham offers a unique approach to long-term care. This small 17-bed assisted living home offers an intimate home setting with quality care. The home-like environment brings warmth and intimacy to the residents and their families. It is also a safe place for those who are memory impaired. A Little R+R for the Holidays

A roundup of soothing spa offerings to help you survive the holidays.

Is it just us, or does the hustle and bustle of the holidays get more hectic every year? As soon as the calendar flips to December, the days seem to whip by in a blur of tinsel and wish lists, candy and shopping bags. Before you know it, you’re slumped under the tree, wearily wondering where the month has gone and vowing that next year, you’ll remember to slow down and enjoy it all a little bit more.

We’re here to remind you to do just that. Salons and spas around the North Shore are pumping up their usual offerings with special packages and programs for the holidays, and one surefire way to add some relaxation to your to-do list is by indulging in a bit of pampering. We asked the beauty specialists at the area’s most acclaimed spas and salons to offer a sneak peek at their holiday offerings, and they gave us the dish about chocolate pedicures, pre-party primping, and even a few “secret elves.” The spirit of giving is definitely alive and well, too, since these salons make it a point to give back to their clients with discounted services and even charity events for the community. So whether you give one of these luxurious gifts to your best friend, favorite auntie, or simply decide to spoil yourself, these special holiday packages will definitely add a little extra sparkle to the season.

Spa ni’joli & Salon Like any good Santa, there’s seemingly nothing the elves at spa ni’joli & salon in Methuen haven’t thought of when it comes to awesome holiday packages. They offer everything from help getting ready for your holiday party to mini-pedis for preteens, complete with a bottle of polish for them to take home. “We really just try to put the spirit in everybody,” says owner Nicole DeRosa. “We always try to do something different that we don’t typically offer all year round.” Discounted packages at a variety of prices offer full days of relaxation, massages, and spa manicures and pedicures, as well as services for guys, teens, and preteens. The salon itself is transformed, too, with garland, music, and pretty wreaths. Steaming mugs of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and red and green sprinkles will warm up even the chilliest winter afternoon. “We also always change up the spa pedicures,” DeRosa says, by adding special products with scents like winterberry and chocolate to the treatments. “It’s just something that feels very inviting and fun.” spa ni’joli didn’t forget about holiday parties, either, offering two different pre-party primping packages that include services like airbrush tanning, makeup application, hair styling, nail services, and temporary eyelash application. 116 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen, 978-682-9772, nijoli.com.

Indra Salon At Indra Salon in Andover, the spirit of giving back imbues everything owners April Lyn Graffeo and Jose Batistine do, according to Edgardo Gonzalez, director of public relations and marketing at Indra. “They’re incredible individuals, and they’re always looking for ways to give back to the community,” he says. That’s especially true around the holidays, when Indra offers complimentary hand and neck massages to clients, whether they’re getting salon services or just stopping in to buy a gift certificate. “When the client comes in, we make them feel special,” Gonzalez says. “If you want a Diet Coke, we’ll go and get it.” A fireplace, decorations, little gift boxes filled with chocolate, and discount programs add to the spirit, too. But the real magic comes with Indra’s special fundraising events, such as auctions, to raise money for causes that are important to the salon’s employees and clients. For example, the salon’s “Bag a Bag” silent handbag auction earlier this year raised more than $6,500 in a single night to help fund epilepsy research. “A company should always give back no matter what,” Gonzalez says. “Caring for others is the greatest gift you can give. You’re getting in a spiritual way. It makes everything much more rewarding.” 8 Main Street, Andover, 978-460-8800, indrasalon.com.

Bodiscience Holistic Day Spa For Dawn Tardif, founder and owner of BodiScience, an Ayurvedic spa in Beverly, the holidays are all about getting clients to take a break and focus on rejuvenation. “Everyone’s shopping for everyone else; they’re not really taking care of themselves,” she says. “We’re exhausted, and we don’t have the time or energy to spend with family members.” Tardif says BodiScience sends out postcards to remind clients to take time for themselves around the holidays. They also give out extra little presents along with their gift certificates. BodiScience’s Secret Elf program invites clients to make wish lists for the spa services or products they’d like to get, along with the name and contact info for the person who might give them that gift. Then, BodiScience will send the wish list to the right person, and if they order something, the gift will be completely assembled and wrapped when they come to pick it up. Complimentary chair massages also help people relax as they do their shopping. “Around the holidays, that’s something that we’re all about,” Tardif says. “We’re here to give back to people so that they can feel recharged, restored.” 100 Cummings Center, Suite 150F, Beverly, 978-927-9909, bodiscience.com.

Bliss Spa & SalonWhen we caught up with Bliss owner Belinda Gosselin, she’d just put the finishing touches on this year’s holiday packages, including the decadent-sounding Chocolate Delight Package, featuring a spa manicure and pedicure, a Bliss facial, and a 60-minute Swedish massage. She also filled us in on the brand new stress-relieving back treatment that will be included in one of packages. It’s a 60-minute treatment that Gosselin describes as “a facial for the back.” Gosselin says including new treatments in holiday packages gets people out of their run-of-the-mill mani-pedi rut and encourages them to try fun new things. “It kind of opens their eyes to the newer services or what’s up and coming,” she says. Other specials at the North Andover salon are the Holiday Pampering package, featuring a hot stone pedicure, stress relieving back treatment, and Bliss facial; and the Holiday Season Sampler, which includes a mini facial, 30-minute massage, and a manicure and pedicure. Indulgent body treatments accompany yummy treats like pastries, chocolate, tea, and coffee, and guests are free to pad around in slippers and a bathrobe during their treatments. “People will

come in here [and] they’re hectic all the time and running around. They like something that’s a little bit different,” Gosselin says. “A lot of times they’ll say, ‘It’s the only time we get to relax.” 419 Andover Street, North Andover, 978-689-4400, blissspaandsalon.com.

M. Lekkakos Salon, Spa & Boutique M. Lekkakos Salon, Spa & Boutique in Wenham is known for its facials, so some of the most popular holiday packages are ones that include a massage-facial combo. Especially popular for wintertime are the hydrating facials that combat cold weather-induced dry skin. “We usually try to feed the skin with moisture,” says owner Maria Lekkakos, a former Miss Massachusetts. Hydrating facials treat skin “that’s really, really dry and dull-looking to revitalize it.” At M. Lekkakos, every facial is different and based on the client’s unique skin-care needs. “I think the holiday season is stressful,” Lekkakos says. “One thing that we do for clients is that we personalize and customize [the facials] for each individual.” Plus, the facials focus on more than just the face: they also include a therapeutic massage for the legs, feet, scalp, and décolletage. “That’s what I wanted,” Lekkakos says, adding that she asked herself: “If I could put myself in this bed, what would I want as a client?” She hopes that clients can come into the salon and just relax. “People get so hectic with the holiday season. They’re exhausted from shopping,” she says. “It’s very quiet; it is like a home in here.” 154 Main Street, Wenham, 978-468-9540, mlekkakos.com.

Interlocks Salon & Day Spa With a dozen packages and gift ideas to choose from, Interlocks Salon & Day Spa doesn’t skimp when it comes to making someone you love feel special. There are packages just for the guys, hot stone massages, and signature facials. The seasonal pedicure changes to reflect the time of year, so be on the lookout for the special winter pedicure, which will include yummy scents and even special treats, like whoopie pies or pumpkin spice cake, for you to nibble on from your massage chair. But the most fun might come with the spa packages, which range from the simple “Fingers to Toes”—a two-and-a-half-hour package that includes a manicure, pedicure, and one-hour massage—to the seriously indulgent, six-hour “Ultimate Day at the Spa.” That package includes a 90-minute hot stone massage; facial; spa manicure; signature pedicure; shampoo, blow-dry, and styling; and, to top it all off, a catered lunch. 58 Merrimac Street, Newburyport, 978-465-3010, interlockssalon.com.

Looking Forward to Visiting Your Dental Office. Creating Beautiful Smiles

Andover Dentist
15 Central Street, Andover, MA  01810
978-475-1230, www.francismccarthydmd.com

Building a foundation of trust is vital to the success of a dental practice.  Francis R. McCarthy D.M.D., Rosalia A. Gallo D.M.D., and their staff treat their patients as special individuals in a relaxed and positive environment to make their dental visit a comfortable and pleasant experience. A long standing patient stated, “I enjoy coming to Dr. McCarthy’s office. He, Dr. Gallo and the staff are always smiling and truly enjoy each other and their patients. They all have a passion for their profession.”

Dr. McCarthy has enjoyed practicing dentistry in Andover since 1986.  Dr. Gallo joined the practice in 2009 when she relocated to the area where she had practiced for twenty years. All of the staff have been an integral part of the office for at least twelve years.  They provide consistent care and take a personal interest in their patients. As one patient stated, “The reason I drive to the office from Westford is to be treated by my hygienist whom I have been seeing for ten years. She is the best hygienist I have ever had.”

Dr. McCarthy and Dr. Gallo believe that prevention and education are the keys to optimal dental health.  A thorough examination with digital radiographs and intraoral photographs, along with oral cancer screenings, are performed to diagnose oral diseases.  The practice was featured in an article in Doctor of Dentistry magazine for its use of digital radiography which uses 80% less radiation than conventional radiography.

The office excels at providing state of the art esthetic and cosmetic restorations along with nonsurgical periodontal therapy. These treatments include smile enhancement with teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, bonded cosmetic white restorations, crowns and the restoration of dental implants. Fluoride treatments, sealants, periodic cleanings, and detailed oral hygiene techniques are provided to prevent future dental disease.

Dr. McCarthy, Dr. Gallo and their staff are committed to continuing education and team building. They attend lectures and meetings together to stay informed and trained in new techniques, products, and equipment. They all enjoy being together at yearly team building seminars at various locations. They have completed courses at the prestigious L.D. Panky Institute, the Las Vegas Institute, and the Yankee Dental Conference to stay abreast of the changes and recommendations of the profession.

No Pain Laser Lipo?

The skinny on a new fat-fighting “miracle treatment.”

You can’t miss Dermatique MedSpa in Danvers, where signs in the window shout: no pain laser lipo! as seen on dr. oz! Those displays are referring to Zerona, a new, FDA-approved fat treatment that slims “without diet or exercise,” using a low-level laser that deflates fat cells. Six treatments set you back $1,299.

I’m a sucker for a miracle treatment, and apparently, I’m not alone: Since it began offering Zerona in May, Dermatique—owned by Beverly internist Nathalie Majorek, M.D.—has treated more than 50 clients who’ve lost an average of five to six inches each. Though Zerona is hyped as effort-free, there are certain rules: clients must promise to eat healthy, exercise at least 30 minutes a day, and cut out alcohol and caffeine for the duration of the treatment. And it’s not for the seriously overweight: The ideal client has 10 to 20 pounds to lose. “With other weight loss programs, like cleanses, you’re often losing fluid and muscle,” says Majorek, a slim internist who shed an inch from her own waist after six sessions. She typically recommends nine to 12 for clients 35 and older, like me: “The older you get,” she says, “the more the fat that’s been there a while wants to stick around.”

For 40 minutes, I lie on a table in disposable undies while five lasers beam directly at my outer and inner thighs. Clients choose an area of the body where fat loss has historically been difficult, though Majorek says that most lose weight all over. The sessions are remarkably boring, but painless. After six, I’ve lost an inch from my waist and back, a half-inch from my mid-abs, a quarter inch from my hips, and three quarters of an inch from each thigh. Zerona totals this up to a 4.5-inch weight loss, which seems a little like fuzzy math to me and my still-snug jeans; it’s also worth not-ing that the lasered spot fared no better than any other. Still, it’s less than what I walked in with.

Is Zerona the miracle treatment we’ve all been waiting for? Maybe, maybe not. Chances are, two weeks of daily exercise, healthy eating, and teetotaling would alone result in change. But perhaps the fact that you’re forking out $1,299 means you’re less likely to cheat. Which, as every dieter knows, is half the battle. 1 Elm St., Danvers, 978-777-5110.

Tensions Spark at Anna Jaques Hospital

For Newburyport’s Anna Jaques Hospital, a multi-million-dollar expansion plan has tensions running high.

The international brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 103 (Local 103) is protesting the decision of Newburyport’s Anna Jaques Hospital to go with a non-union electrical contractor for its $15 million expansion. In late March, the protesters arrived and began handing out what many perceive as inflammatory flyers about affiliated doctors and how their malpractice leads to injury and infection. The group is erecting a large blow-up rat pointing a finger at “corporate greed,” and sending its message across the sky by plane banners. The campaign, “Anna Jaques Exposed,” is flaring up controversy in Newburyport, an end nowhere in sight.

According to Local 103 business agent Louis Antonellis, the group will soon have a storefront downtown, to be used as a campaign base and to educate about the union’s chief issue. The fight is over healthcare, Antonellis says.

Sensational Approach and Strong Reaction “Who is responsible for the unexpected infections occurring at Anna Jaques Hospital?” asks one flyer. Others warn passersby to “Beware.” Local 103’s website, annajaquesexposed.com, links to a number of affiliated doctors with malpractice settlements.

Those that support Anna Jaques say that the union protesters are vulgar, using curse words, making inappropriate gestures, and shouting inflammatory comments at those in opposition. The Citizens Supporting Anna Jaques group has regular “standouts” at Market Square, Three Corners, and the Market Basket plaza. Started by Michael Roy, former owner of Michael’s Harborside and former member of the hospital’s Board of Incorporaters, the group is pro-Labor and “anti bullying,” he says.

Roy feels the union’s campaign is distasteful and offensive, but when he read that the union might continue its protest for a year or two, he wrote a letter to the editor proposing a citizen response in support of the hospital. “You mean we have to tolerate this barrage against our hospital? …It’s like, ‘Enough already. You’ve made your point, now it’s time to go home,’” he says.
Local 103’s campaign leaves many in disgust. “If the union had legitimate concerns, those concerns have been completely lost in the face of the tactics that IBEW’s leadership has used during this dispute. The tactics, like a flyover during the high school graduation ceremony, have been unconscionable. They are an assault on the city itself and its residents, and they have given all labor a black eye,” says local representative Michael Costello.

Antonellis says the union has been in constant contact with Newburyport mayor Donna Holaday’s office and has been respectful of its requests. During the town’s Yankee Homecoming, for example, “we pulled back for a couple of days because we recognized the sensitivity of the area and the event,” he says.

Despite a lack of violations, Costello and others have labeled the union’s “Exposed” protest campaign as extortion. Many say the campaign is really a message to other local hospitals about the price their communities would pay if they do not select the union for a contract. Some individuals dealing with the “Exposed” campaign are afraid to speak, citing concern for their families and businesses. However, Roy says the union has not threatened either his family or his business, Haley’s Ice Cream.

According to Antonellis, the term “extortion” is inaccurate. “The goal is to put Anna Jaques on the spot and let everyone know what their hiring policies are…It’s all about health care.” Local 103 provides 100 percent coverage to all 7,500 union members and retirees in 110 cities and towns in eastern Massachusetts, he says. MEC Electrical Contractors (MEC), a non-union group with a sizeable list of health care clients, does not provide health care, says Antonellis. “There’s a difference between providing and offering,” he says.

It’s About the “Bennies” An MEC spokesperson confirmed that the contractor provides Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance but could not share other information, like retiree coverage, or the percentage of health care premiums the company pays.

The hospital would not confirm the difference in the bids, but according to a member of the Citizens group, the difference was about $200,000. Antonellis attributes this amount to health care costs and says the hospital is simply “taking the cheap route with the health care piece.”

Since its charter in 1900, Local 103 has advocated for union workers. They advertise the best-trained electricians in the field, as well as higher wages to union workers. The union’s website says that “Over the last 25 years, political power has shifted dramatically to corporate and wealthy special interests and away from working families,” and that corporate greed has undone 60 years of progress.

“If it wasn’t for unions, there would be no such thing as employer-sponsored health care,” says Antonellis. “If there is anyone that’s going to take a second look at [its] contractor, it should be a health care facility,” he says.

Every day, hospitals turn people away if they do not have health insurance, but Anna Jaques is saying, “We won’t turn you away if you don’t provide health care…This is Ground Zero on the fight for health care,” he says.

Incredulous Behavior The Citizens group “gave credibility to a lot of people [who] wanted to come forward” in response to the union’s “Exposed” campaign, which Laurie Christiansen calls “vile.” She and others have joined Roy in the crusade against the union protest. Roy is “not a rabble-rouser looking for a fight,” she says.

Christiansen and Roy say the union’s campaign has codified support for the hospital and the Citizens group has more than 80 supporters. At press time, the Citizens had upwards of 400 Facebook connections, while the union campaign page has about 50 “likes.” An initial goal of the Citizens group was to see 1,000 signs supporting Anna Jaques Hospital posted around town. Roy said at press time there were 600 hundred signs up and more to come.

According to Christiansen, the union protest is over the line—and he’s not just referring to the vulgar language and gestures. “How can they obstruct the sign at the entrance to the hospital?” she says. “They sit at the sign and smoke cigars…So [the Citizens group] got into the fray.”

Last year, the hospital saw more than 33,000 patients, Christiansen says. “It’s a huge resource for the community,” she continues, adding that the union’s campaign is about “heavy handedness.”  The union simply printed the list of malpractice settlements, she says, adding, “Most doctors settle.” Her family’s doctors are targets of the union’s “Exposed” campaign. “It doesn’t impact us at all…It’s all very inflammatory and it’s meant to scare people. It’s not factual.”

According to Antonellis, all doctors and the hospital itself have the opportunity to review the union’s information for accuracy for a week prior to its being used in the campaign. Not once in four months has there been a written response, says Antonellis. He also insists the protest is peaceful. There have been no actions taken against Local 103 or its members for slander or civil disturbance.

However, “Would they be exposing all these doctors if they got the contract?” Christiansen wonders.

Antonellis responds, “If Anna Jaques cared about health care, we would definitely take a different approach.”  More than 50 area hospitals support unions, he says. “Holy Family Hospital and others have made the decision to make sure contractors provide health care to their workers.”

Interestingly MEC indicates it has also performed two projects at Holy Family Hospital. However, “as far as Holy Family and Local 103 are concerned, we have a great working relationship,” Antonellis says. “When Holy Family Hospital has medically sensitive or technical electrical/construction work, they are very concerned with making sure contractors ‘provide’ comprehensive health care to their workers.”

Sparks Fly Amid Quiet Response So why go after the doctors? “It’s attention getting,” Antonellis says. The union is not letting the doctors, board of directors, or anyone else affiliated with the hospital “off the hook,” he says. “We all have a stake in the game…We feel doctors shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this campaign.”

The hospital itself hesitated talking to Northshore and, according to a spokesperson, may be placing a moratorium on further comment to the media and hoped the magazine would defer to the Citizens group. “We’re in the business of taking care of patients…we have no interest in addressing distracting information.” The spokesperson did say that the open bid process resulted in selecting the “most well-suited for the project at hand and the one that makes the best use of the community’s resources.”

The doctors posted on the union’s “Exposed” campaign website have not addressed the allegations with the union or publicly. “The only thing the doctors are interested in is taking care of patients and running their practices…Their decision has been not to speak to anyone,” the spokesperson says.

According to Antonellis, the union says it has reached out to the hospital CEO and board of directors to sit down and talk about their concerns; however, the hospital spokesperson did not say if these requests were made or denied.

Staying Power and Stalemate When asked about the cost of the “Exposed” campaign’s use of messaging in the sky, which Antonellis confirms is an airplane-towed banner flown every weekend, he says that it costs the union “far less than the difference in the price of the bids.”

Anna Jaques Hospital’s reputation is not great, Antonellis says. “Some of the statistics we’ve dug up are very believable in the community.” In response to allegations, the Citizens’ website lists the hospital’s accolades.

The campaign “reaches a new level every day,” according to Antonellis, but the union is still open to sitting down and explaining its point of view.

While there is little public evidence of community support for the “Exposed” campaign, Antonellis says, “when [people] take the time to listen, they are appalled by the hospital’s decision.” He forwarded a letter to the editor of the Eagle-Tribune, which stated concern about the integrity of local hospitals that might be trying to save money by leaving workers without health care.
When “the rat, the vulgar language, the gestures, the intimidation…when that ceases,” maybe then the counter protest will stop, Roy comments.

Local Spa Offers Unique Treatment

A Beverly spa offers special treatments to soldiers returning from war. By Felicity Long

Bodiscience, a holistic spa in Beverly specializing in treatments drawn from Ayurvedic and ancient Chinese philosophies, is making the most of the holiday season by reaching out to an often-overlooked segment of the spa-going population: soldiers and their families.

A new program called “Welcome Warriors” offers complimentary Chromatherapy and other services designed to help military families deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) brought about by wartime.

“We opened our center in 1991, and since then, we have seen increasing cases of PTSD crop up in our business,” says BodiScience owner Dawn Tardif, who helped conceive the Welcome Warriors Project with Robert and Melanie Sachs, owners of Diamond Way Ayurveda in California. Tardif and her colleagues noticed a spike in PTSD after 9/11 and saw that sufferers were self-medicating in unhealthy ways.

“We’ve had soldiers coming to us who are being deployed as often as four times, and this is taking a toll on the whole family,” Tardif says. “Psychotherapy can have an impact, but physical touch, done intentionally to release emotional traumas, can take them through the healing process more quickly.”

The project has the support of Brig. Gen. James Cook, creator of a non-profit community-based initiative called the Warrior Water Center Project that offers help to returning soldiers and their families. Cook is lobbying for funds to subsidize the wellness treatments, but for now, BodiScience is picking up the costs. To help defray the expense, Tardif and her partners are asking other practitioners to join the project with free or discounted treatments or memberships.

“When a soldier or family member enters our office, the first thing we do is say, ‘Thank you for doing what you do for us.’ Some of us don’t agree with the war, but we put that aside and we don’t judge. They have already gone through trauma, and someone has to help them through it. That’s why we’re here.” 100 Cummings Center, Suite 150F, Beverly, 978-927-9909, bodiscience.com.

Leading Healthcare Professionals

The TMS Center of New England: Providing Innovative Treatment for Depression

Do you feel you are taking too much medication to treat your depression? Do the side effects of medication outweigh its benefits? Does depression still have control over your life? You are not alone. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, race, gender or lifestyle and even with treatment, depression can mean a lifetime of suffering.

Over more than 25 years as a neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Karl Lanocha has encountered hundreds of patients who, despite excellent care with traditional medication and psychotherapy treatments, still experience the debilitating psychological and physical symptoms of depression. Until recently, these treatments as well as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) were the only treatments available to patients suffering from treatment resistant major depression.

As a specialist in neuromodulation, Dr. Lanocha became interested in a promising new treatment called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Clinical research has shown TMS to reduce the symptoms of depression about 75% of the time. After TMS was approved by the FDA in October 2008, Dr. Lanocha became one of the first providers of TMS in the nation. “With TMS, I saw patients suffering from depression for years, if not decades, not only get better, but fully recover,” Dr. Lanocha said. “TMS Therapy is truly a remarkable treatment,“ he explained, “It is a targeted treatment. Unlike medications, TMS does not circulate through the body, therefore it does not cause side effects such as weight gain, upset stomach, or sexual dysfunction.”

After witnessing such results among his patients, Dr. Lanocha left his position of 20 years as Medical Director of Psychiatric Services at a large hospital to devote more time to caring for patients using TMS Therapy. The TMS Center of New England, located in a small, quiet office in Portsmouth, NH, allows for the personalized care Dr. Lanocha strives to provide. “TMS is a highly effective treatment,” he says, “but depression is a painful condition that affects a person’s entire being. I believe that treating depression requires a comprehensive and holistic approach. As a person begins to recover, the right type of counseling can help a person reclaim the life that depression took away.”

Are you or a loved one frustrated with your medical care?  Would you like to see your doctor when you need to, on time with no waiting?  Imagine sitting down for relaxed discussions of all your concerns with your doctor himself, not a substitute.  Would you like to come away with clear answers, ready to begin a treatment plan that you understand?  On nights and weekends, wouldn’t you like to call your doctor directly on his cell phone?

Dr. Bill Daly provides each of his patients with the same quality service that he would want for himself!  And he brings you 30 years of experience in internal medicine.  He is also knowledgeable about Complementary and Alternative Therapies, and supports their use when appropriate for your condition.  If you need a specialist, he knows how to find the best for your needs, and coordinates your care with the hospitals of your choice.  The result is first-class medical care, with prompt attentive service by an experienced physician who knows you and your concerns.

Patient Centered Care is the innovative business model that makes this possible.  Dr. Daly works primarily for you, instead of your insurance company.  This ensures that he is available to give you the time and attention that you need, in a relationship of mutual respect.  He does this by charging a very reasonable membership fee, and thereby limits the number of patients in his practice.  Please note that these are specifically the services that healthcare insurance companies do not cover!  This model is sometimes called Concierge Medicine.

Dr. Daly helps to keep the cost of the membership down by charging your healthcare insurance for the medical services they do cover, such as office visits.  But those reimbursements are relatively small, so his primary responsibility is to ensure that you receive the time, attention, prompt availability and respect that you need, because he wants to remain employed by you!  And he always goes the extra mile to research difficult questions or problems, and get back to you with the best information or therapies available.

For Women With Breast Cancer: reconstructive surgery can play a part in recovery.

istock_000006756803large_smAfter a woman learns she may have breast cancer, she must absorb the news, undergo more diagnostic evaluation and get a breast biopsy. If cancer is diagnosed, she will then meet the experts who will help her fight the disease, learn more about her condition, and make choices about treatment.
It can be overwhelming. The Beverly Hospital Breast Health Center can help guide a woman through this difficult time with both compassion and expertise.
Audrey Duva-Frissora, M.D., director of breast MRI for the Breast Health Center, speaks for the team when she says, “We know that when a woman finds out that she has an abnormal mammogram, it’s an emotional emergency. We fast-track getting her in for additional imaging—including mammography, breast ultrasound and MRI—to help establish a diagnosis. We are pleased to offer the Aurora Dedicated Breast MRI System, the North Shore’s only FDA-approved breast MRI that is specifically designed for breast imaging.”
If cancer is detected, a woman can rest assured that a highly accomplished and coordinated team will be at her side. The Breast Health Center offers a woman newly diagnosed with cancer the option of having her treatment plan created through a multidisciplinary conference. At the conference, cancer specialists from each discipline sit together to review and discuss each woman’s specific data. The result is a comprehensive, individualized plan.
Within the multidisciplinary approach, reconstructive plastic surgery can play an important role in planning and treatment. Fortunately, advances in early detection mean more cancer is being found and treated at an earlier stage, so the need for mastectomy is diminishing. When mastectomy is recommended, or when there are changes in the contours of a breast after lumpectomy, reconstructive surgeons can use innovative techniques to restore symmetry.
“Breast reconstruction after cancer can help women embrace their femininity and feel whole again,” says Jagruti Patel, M.D., chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals. “There are multiple options, and each can be tailored to the individual woman.” She adds, “Women should know that reconstructive procedures for patients with breast cancer are covered by health insurance, by federal mandate.”
A patient will receive guidance from her Breast Health team about the right point in her care to meet with one of the center’s reconstructive plastic surgeons. “We begin a dialogue and a relationship, and we coordinate with the rest of the treatment team throughout planning, treatment and follow-up,” says Patel.
“New breast reconstructive techniques are now available to augment or replace traditional approaches,” notes Beverly M. Shafer, M.D., plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals. Patel and Shafer agree that advances include reconstructing the breast after skin sparing mastectomies, and the creation of much more natural-looking breasts using a new generation of silicone gel implants together with a “dermal matrix” for support.
Whatever the option selected, for women north of Boston who face breast cancer, Shafer says, “Finding out that breast reconstruction is offered, and that it’s a right, can be a silver lining in a dark cloud. Women learn that something can be done to help restore them to a complete state.”

Informed. Empowered. Proactive. Today’s patients take an active role in their healthcare.

istock_000009553546large_smWith the internet, everything we need to know these days is just a “click” away. The ease of “googling” any subject we want to know more about has empowered us; made us informed thinkers, “educated consumers”.
So why is it, that in the most important area of our lives—our health—many of us still take such a passive role in our care? Perhaps it’s because in our parent’s day, we learned that “good patients” followed “doctor’s orders”.
Fortunately, times have changed. Doctor and patient now view themselves as teammates with the shared goal of improving the quality of care provided. Before an appointment, today’s patients do their homework, often using internet resources to gather information and formulate questions for the appointment.

How do physicians feel about patients being so involved in their own care? “I absolutely encourage it” says Dr. Kristina Anton-Schnell of North Shore Primary Care, located at Beverly Hospital at Danvers. “Being prepared ensures that important issues will be covered thoroughly and helps the patient get the most out of their appointment.”

How should patients “prepare” for an appointment? Dr. Anton-Schnell provides this helpful checklist:

  • Bring your medical records or have them transferred before your appointment
  • Bring a list of any specialists you see and their phone numbers.
  • Make notes about your health history. Share this information upfront.
  • Make a list of your medications, doses and any allergies you have.
  • Make a list of your symptoms and concerns.
  • Use on-line information sources such as webmd.com, uptodate.com and emedicine.medscape.com.
  • Bring print-outs to discuss.
  • Bring a list of your questions.
  • Make sure your questions are focused on the specific issue which has brought you to the doctors office.

What are the important questions to ask?

  • If medications are prescribed or additional procedures or testing are recommended, ask about the benefits and the risks.
  • Ask if there are other treatment options.
  • Ask if it would be helpful to get a second opinion.
  • Ask if you need a follow-up appointment.
  • If you’re confused about anything your physician says, ask them to repeat or clarify.

The real issue, says Dr. Anton-Schnell, is that “you need to find a physician you can work with. Keeping you healthy is a team effort. The information you provide, the questions you ask help us to provide better care. I tell my patients, ‘you only have one body…one life. Take care of it.’ The more informed and proactive you are, the better we can help you do that.”
If you decide it’s time to look for a new physician, we can help. The professionals at the Beverly Hospital HealthConnection will listen to your needs and recommend some names that might be good matches. One more tip. Before you choose a physician, meet with them for a consult. Feel free to interview them. Ask questions. Do they listen attentively? Do they provide good answers? Get a sense of personality and “bed-side manner”. Does it feel like it would be a good match? Go For it!

If you’d like to find a physician who is right for you, call our HealthConnection at 888-253-0800 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Or, visit us online at beverlyhospital.org/findadoctor.

Newburyport’s Revitalive Cafe

Written by Alyssa Giacobbe

Photograph by Lauren Carelli

nsdj09_revitalive_1Before you knock it as a left-over hippie fad, consider that eating raw has been around since the birth of humanity. Modern day raw foodists, however, rally around the purported health benefits: increased energy, weight loss, improved sleep, and even a reversal of some more serious health conditions.

“We’ve seen people improve symptoms of diabetes, arthritis, Lyme disease…,” says Anna Forkan, who, with Kristen Overlock, co-owns “raw food education center” Revitalive and the recently-opened Revitalive Café in Newburyport. Since going raw, the pair have lost a combined 140 pounds and reversed their own depression, peptic ulcers, and chronic fatigue.

By not heating food above 115 degrees, say raw foodists, it retains more nutrients, as well as enzymes that aid in digestion. But it’s not a life of rabbit food. Located in the Tannery and open for breakfast and lunch, Revitalive Café offers up such creative raw creations as Meetballs and Marinara (made of sprouted almonds, raw sundried tomatoes, basil, and sea salt), and Mock Tuna Salad, in which pumpkin seeds, celery, sweet onion, and sea veggies are impressively reminiscent of actual tuna on rye. Chocolate cream pie is made with raw organic cacao, coconut, and dates.

In addition to limiting temperatures, the café avoids all animal products, grains, soy, garlic, artificial sweeteners, and mushrooms, the last of which are common allergens. “Our aim is to make eating raw an easy thing to stick to,” says Forkan. “People can enjoy something that looks and tastes like a tuna sandwich. The reality is, you don’t have to starve, and it doesn’t have to taste horrible.”

“Our goal isn’t for everyone to be 100 percent raw,” she continues. “If people ate a salad every day, that would be awesome. Or even if they ate an apple once a day. We’re not dogmatic. We just want to be positive, because you can and you will feel better.” With a little help, of course, from a slice of guilt-free chocolate cream pie. 50 Water St.,

Color in Our Lives

The following article was submitted by Dawn Tardiff of BodiScience in Beverly. Would you like to be a guest blogger here at nshoremag.com? Email us at: editor@nshoremag.com

bluelightsImagine a world without color…color affects our mood and our health and without it we would experience shifts in how we feel, how we act and how we age. We experience color in our food, the choices we select for decorating our homes, the vibrant energetic color from daylight and the clothing that we choose to wear. Our bodies have an innate wisdom that allows us to gravitate to the colors we need.

The theory that color affects our lives has been talked about throughout the ages. The most important form of how we receive color is the full spectrum light of daylight. Think of the bright hues of yellow, orange and red of daylight and how they give energy and the deep calming spectrum of blues, indigo and violet of nighttime, and how they have a calming influence…this observation then allows us to see how the red end of the spectrum is energizing while the blue end of the color spectrum is relaxing.

Egyptians used colored light as a healing art. Archaeologist discovered pyramids constructed with openings for sunlight for insertion of colored glass and crystals. In the pyramids there were individual healing rooms which resonated with specific color frequencies. The power of full spectrum light has been used for centuries for jaundice, psoriasis, depression and the list goes on. Colored light is used in state-of-the-art treatments to improve your health which improves the look of your skin, the tone of your body and the balancing of emotions. Technology meets science with utilizing colored light on acupuncture points to balance you on a physical and emotional level.

A wise woman once said, “include a variety of color in the food you eat, it will improve your health”. When we ingest food we first ingest the vibration. Visually the color is coded by nature and our bodies respond to the vibration intuitively. The color of any living thing is a sign of health. We find ourselves selecting the best looking apples or the best looking fish, because that is an indicator to us of the freshness and health of our food selections. Kathy from The Blue Moon in Exeter, NH puts this beautifully “food and color are not only an important part of the presentation placed on your plate but for your health long after it passes your palate.”

Our homes and the rooms within them can be designed to provide a solace or a place to energize us, based upon the colors we have selected and what rooms we have chosen to decorate with color. Sigrid Olsen says this so beautifully, “I have used color as a powerful influence throughout my life and career. Even in my home, I enjoy changing the ambiance by altering hues…walls, paintings, even floral arrangements can perk up a room and hence my mood. I have one turquoise wall in my living room that reminds me of the Caribbean and another in the guest bath that I have painted the color of orange marmalade, and accented with seashells and paintings in warm neutral tones.”

Color is energy, and each color has a frequency that has nutritional value which is food for our development and evolvement of many aspects of our being. Surrounding ourselves with uplifting colors and environment that creates positive visual impressions, can have a strong impact on how we present ourselves and interact with our world.

sirakianSirakian Aesthetic & Implant Dentistry
Dr. Aram Sirakian, Andover

Individuals choose cosmetic dentists for a number of reasons. Some hope to stem or reverse the natural aging process of teeth while others are self-conscious about unattractive, chipped or discolored teeth most of their adult lives and feel it’s hidden their true personality. After all, a smile is the gateway to positive first impressions. Like a dental facelift, if done correctly, cosmetic dentistry can be the safest, fastest, and most noticeable method to improve your true appearance. But in searching for the right dentist, the process can be daunting. The truth is, many dentists advertise themselves as cosmetic dentists when in fact they have little or no cosmetic training at all. Choosing the right dentist with the proper training and skills is the first and most important step in dramatically improving your smile and overall appearance.

On the subject of aesthetic and implant dentistry, one of the most qualified and celebrated cosmetic dentists on the East Coast is located right here on the North Shore. Dr. Aram Sirakian is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on complete oral rehabilitation and advances in cosmetic and implant dentistry and was one of the first surgically trained prosthodontists in New England. After graduating from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he received his D.M.D., Dr. Sirakian immersed himself in a 2-year Fellowship in Oral Implantology and Biomaterials at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York—one of only a handful programs devoted exclusively to the art and science of implant dentistry. This training is quite unique in its depth and its dual emphasis on both the functional and aesthetic aspects of implant dentistry. He then received his specialty training in Prosthodontics from the prestigious Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Sirakian often lectures internationally on advancements in cosmetic and implant dentistry. With two convenient locations on the North Shore: iSmile in Peabody and Sirakian Aesthetic and Implant Dentistry in Andover. Dr. Sirakian combines unparalleled credentials with state-of-the-art facilities to make your makeover the most rewarding experience.

SKIN SMARTS IN THE LAST OF SUMMER’S SUN

As summer draws to an end, with less time spent on the beach and the water (sigh), you might be ready to toss your sunscreen and to think less about skin protection. Don’t, says Gary Rogers, MD, a dermatologist and director of dermatologic surgery and oncology for the Cutaneous Oncology Group at Beverly Hospital.

Stay careful, and even increase your awareness—both are key to preventing and treating skin cancer, which is on the rise nationwide.

“You don’t need to become a cave dweller to avoid the sun—just be smart about it,” says Dr. Rogers. This fall, consider these steps part of a prescription for skin health:

  • Every day, wear sunscreen on your face, ears and hands. Read labels and choose SPF 30 or higher, with both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Plan your time outside to avoid the midday sun—in New England in the summer, fall and spring, this is approximately 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Find safe ways to get Vitamin D. “You could meet your daily need for Vitamin D with only five minutes outdoors on a cloudy day,” explains Rogers. You can get Vitamin D fromfood or supplements; check with your health care provider.

Fall is also a good time to “go to school” to learn the signs that a mole or a skin-change should be examined. Ask your primary care provider for information, or go to the websites of the American Academy of Dermatology (www.aad.org/public) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).

Once you know what to look for, what if you do find something? Contact your primary care doctor or dermatologist. Most skin cancers can be treated with an office procedure.

For those cancers that need more specialized treatments, patients should rest assured in knowing that they can receive the most advanced care from Beverly Hospital’s
Cutaneous Oncology Group. This team provides diagnosis and treatment in one location, and coordinates the expertise of specialists from dermatology, plastic surgery, medical and surgical oncology, radiology, skilled nursing, and the Lifestyle Management Institute.

The group offers Mohs micrographic surgery to treat skin cancers including melanoma. Performed in Boston teaching hospitals but available on the North Shore only at Beverly Hospital, “It maximally preserves healthy tissue while providing the highest cure rate,” says Dr. Rogers.

The team’s innovations include performing sentinel node biopsy together with Mohs surgery when it is important to find out if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. Patients who undergo Mohs surgery can also have cosmetic/reconstructive surgery the same day on the Beverly Hospital campus, if needed. Jagruti Patel, MD, one of the plastic and reconstructive surgeons at Beverly Hospital who collaborates with Dr. Rogers, says, “We mesh our schedules in the clinic or the operating room, so that patients don’t have to wait days between procedures, but can focus on healing right away.”

This fall, renew your commitment to staying smart about the sun—a choice that will repay you for many seasons.

Bikram Yoga MV

Stretching internal organs never felt so good at North Andover’s Bikram Yoga.

By Beth Daigle

Open-eye meditation, 26 postures and two breathing exercises, 105° room temperature, watchful, auctioneer-like instructors, and lots of sweat. Welcome to Bikram yoga. While this style, also known as hot yoga, has been around for years, it’s now picking up steam throughout the North Shore, thanks, in part, to Teri Almquist, who owns Bikram Yoga Merrimack Valley in North Andover. One of just three authorized Bikram studios on the North Shore, Bikram Yoga MV hosted 130 first-time Bikram students in March alone. Almquist’s 49-person studio welcomes anyone looking for a cleansing, therapeutic experience that offers deep stretching and strength-building opportunities.

Almquist first discovered Bikram yoga following a spinal injury that left her immobile from the neck up. While attending her very first class, she realized that Bikram yoga would help her on the road to recovery. The recurring technique and specific order of fixed poses began healing the damage her body had sustained 13 years prior.nsas09_yoga_1

Bikram yoga is a challenging, 90-minute practice created by Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury intended to work every part of the body from the inside out, bringing the entire body into balance. Everything from muscles and tendons to internal organs are stretched and massaged while unhealthy toxins are eliminated.

“No matter what your body can do, even if it’s only a little bit, done the right way, you are getting a great benefit,” Almquist says of her practice.
New to yoga myself, I had all of the typical apprehensions before my first session. I began quite fearful of the heat, only to realize that I could manage my body’s reaction simply by accepting it.

If I began to feel light-headed, as can happen in the first few classes, I simply sat down and resumed when ready.

Other students and the instructor’s careful guidance gave me direction as I watched some bend over backward with ease while others did only what their bodies would allow. As Almquist says, “Just move your eyes and eventually the body will follow.”  Now, when I leave the studio, I feel cleansed and invigorated, while breathing for other activities like running and biking has vastly improved, and my muscles are now noticeably longer, leaner, and looser. Your Medical Information at Your Physician’s Fingertips

A New Era of Medical Records

SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

Physicians’ affiliated with Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals have been busy adopting a technology to improve communication and the safety of patients. Gone are the days when physicians documented your care in a paper chart or asked you to gather up your own medical records, medications records, lab work or x-rays from previous physicians and bring them to your upcoming appointment.

So what’s different?  In a word, everything, thanks to the adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMR). If your physician is affiliated with Beverly or Addison Gilbert hospitals, you may have already had a visit with a physician who uses an EMR.

No  newcomer to this exciting technology, Beverly and Addison Gilbert physicians have been leaders in implementing EMR technology on the North Shore, in the state and nationally. Currently, 88 percent of the primary care physicians associated with Beverly and Addison Gilbert utilize this technology and approximately 94 percent of patients that seek treatment in our community have their medical data contained within an electronic medical record.

At a touch of a button, physicians and their support staff now have clinical data readily available to make informed decisions about your care.  All of your medical data is securely held within the EMR.  Physicians can instantly access your information and review your test results and latest office visit notes for the purposes of providing your treatment.  Primary care and specialists alike can easily share information and access your medical history, current health issues, medications, allergies, lab results or other physicians’ consult notes through secure email technology.  This technology allows the clinical team involved in your care to collaborate and exchange treatment information electronically and securely.

The benefits to you are many. The errors and delays involved in handwritten, hand-delivered data are a thing of the past. Increased accuracy and improved patient safety are facilitated. Greater efficiency in record keeping is possible. Speed and convenience are increased. No more waiting, for example, at the pharmacy while your prescription is ‘phoned-in’. Physicians have the capability to fax or email your prescription directly from their EMR to the pharmacy so your prescription is ready and waiting when you arrive. And more importantly, you have peace of mind knowing that all your health information is securely held in your physician’s EMR accessible only to those who are directly involved with your care.

What more could you ask for? Actually, upcoming enhancements to the EMRs will further expand the power and reach of this innovative system including the possibility for you to request medication renewals or appointments on-line.  Physicians will have the ability to track patients who have not been seen and send them on-line reminders to schedule a preventive exam or follow-up medical appointment.

When you hear the phrase “Electronic Medical Records” you might assume it has very little to do with you. The reality is, it has everything to do with you — everything related to your medical history, current health status and on-going needs, right at your physician’s fingertips.

Electronic Medical Records: just one more example of the way Beverly Hospital and Addison Gilbert Hospital are keeping cutting-edge technology at our physician’s fingertips. And, together we’re all the better for it.
