Hi Carrot, Happy Holidays. The inn is just an idea being floated around. Nothing big is being done while the economy is in a slump, and the proposed inn is just one idea being considered for when the economy turns around. I'm not sure who you mean by "Lingerie Nazi," but that sounds like an interesting idea for a name for a downtown store.

Tearing down Oldies Marketplace (formerly known as Atkinson's Warehouse) and building an inn? Only if NED finds a way to please the Lingerie Nazi, right?

Also, recent election results in town show that perhaps many Newburyport residents, while in favor of bring in business, are apprehensive about development of many parts of the waterfront. The candidate who lost actually got more money from businesses, and the winning candidate campaigned against developing on certain parts of the waterfront. But both candidates campaigned in favor of increased cooperation with New England Development, which most people in town seem to favor. It will be interesting to see how the rest of transformation unfolds and what the reaction is.

John and Janet -- Thank you for the compliments. I noticed when speaking with people around town that there is a mixture of excitement and concern, often with people experiencing both at once. It seems to be an exciting time for Newburyport, but of course exciting times bring concerns about what's to come. The rough economy slowing plans for development has likely enhanced that as well.

Thank you for going the extra steps and taking the time to show both sides of the story. Many of us are happy to see development in the downtown and won the waterfront but we are still nervous about what all this is going to do to our city. I wish Steve Karp had a more detailed plan of what he plans on doing. We have been waiting for years to know what exactly is going to happen to the waterfront and town officials and and when. And the town officials and New England Development have been quiet about the details. It makes people nervous about the whole thing.

Great article... thorough and well-written. I live in Byfield now but used to live in Newburyport and I have always wanted to see something become of that downtown waterfront area. Headache after headache and year after year. I'm happy Mr. Karp is finally going to do something with it. It's good to see people focus on the waterfront as the key to Newburyport's local economy and downtown Newburyport has never looked better. Good job on this piece, keep up the good work North Shore Magazine.
