Not when considering the very present and mindful songs of Will Dailey.

Dailey, 33, winner of the 2009 Boston Music Award for best singer/songwriter, has nurtured his passion for music from a young age. He grew up in and around the North Shore and moved to Andover when he was 12. He purchased his first guitar in Lowell and recognizes his stepfather, a local folk musician, as someone who helped shape his passion for music.

In 2005, Dailey was living in Los Angeles, but returned home following an unlucky bout with appendicitis. His luck turned when he went on to sign with his current label, CBS Records, in 2007. Over the years, Dailey has performed with his band, The Rivals, at venues nationwide, including memorable shows in San Francisco, Aspen, Tulsa, and St. Louis. Today, Dailey’s folk-pop sound has evolved and has been heard all over, even popping up on hit TV shows like “CSI Miami,” “Eli Stone,” and “The Hills.”

While Dailey is living his dream, he recognizes the inescapable stress associated with the demands of his career. “Sometimes I love that there are so many people involved now in my career,” says Dailey, “And sometimes I hate that.”

“Torrent” is Dailey’s latest album and this year, Dailey will be doing what he loves most: writing and recording. “I will try to over-stretch myself if I can,” says Dailey. “If you don’t ever stretch yourself, you’re not doing anything worthwhile.” willdailey.com. —Beth Daigle

Rock Around the Block
The North Shore is home to many emerging musical acts. Here are three to give a listen to.

1. Machine 475 (Salem) Described as a music/art collaborative, Machine 475 offers a unique techno/electronic sound. Founded by Richard Lewis and James Forrest in 2006, the group consists of seven members who bring forth influences from Ireland, Africa, and Russia. Machine 475 performs at Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem, every fourth Friday. machine475.com. 2. Marina Evans (Gloucester) If you seek a mellow vibe inspired by the sounds of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, check out the folk-jazz fusion of Marina Evans. A Rockport native and recent graduate of Columbia University, Evans performs regularly at Dog Bar and Alchemy Café and Bistro in Gloucester. myspace.com/marinaevans. 3. Crash Kings (Andover) With the ferocity of Rage Against the Machine and the dynamics of White Stripes, this trio is quickly developing a following—and they’re doing it without a guitar. A recent tour with Jet and a couple of tracks on the new Warren Miller ski movie could soon make them a household name. crashkingsmusic.com.

6th ANNUAL HAIR OF THE DOG WINE & BEER TASTING and ART SHOW TO BENEFIT MSPCA

Get ready for the 6th Annual Hair of the Dog Wine & Beer Tasting, a benefit for the Methuen MSPCA on Friday evening, April 30th , from 6 to 9 p.m. Hosted for the fourth year in a row by the Essex Art Center at 56 Island Street in Lawrence, the tasting will also feature an art show of works by over 20 Merrimack Valley artists.

In an effort to build on last year’s successful event, which had over 350 attendees and raised more than $10,000 for the Nevins Farm, the event this year will be even bigger and better. We’ve expanded the space this year to include Chester’s (which is right next door through the courtyard) giving us more space for attendees, artists, food and of course wine and beer! As usual the event is jointly sponsored by Essex Art Center in Lawrence and the owners of Andover’s Shawsheen Village Liquors, Michael and Sheri Helman and Whole Foods Market Andover.

The wines and beers will be donated, as always, by the Helmans. Whole Foods Market Andover, is back again this year and is providing another array of delicious appetizers for everyone to sample.

A wide range of artists will have works on view and for sale. They include jewelry makers, potters, painters, sculptors who work in clay, and artists who work in fabric. In keeping with the animal theme, some are even bringing animal-themed art.

Come meet the artists and the Helmans (but not their pets, and don’t bring yours, please). Have some food, a little wine and beer, and listen to the live music of the White Street Band, a Chicago style blues band with a rock and roll edge, while you contribute to a good cause.

The cost of attending the tasting will be $30 at the door or $25 in advance. Tickets can be purchased at Shawsheen Village Liquors, 4 Poor Street, Andover, (978) 475-3636; at the MSPCA, Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway (Route 28), Methuen, (978) 687-7453, Ext. 6105; or online at www.mspca.org/nevinsfarm.

One hundred percent of all ticket proceeds go directly to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm. Ten percent of all wine and art sales will also be donated to the shelter.

For more information, go to www.shawsheenliquors.com and click on “Good Wines for Great Causes.”

Rick Pruneau, a.k.a. Santa Claus, wants your holiday wishes to come true.

But come November, the red suit gets dusted off, and Pruneau transforms into jolly old St. Nick, appearing in the annual town parade and at local events all season long.

Jack Morris: What made you want to be Santa Claus?

Rick Pruneau: First of all, I have the belly. I have no choice. I look like Santa, but I also enjoy the kids. It’s something I can’t get away from. My hair turned white when I was 35, then my beard turned white, and I decided to grow it long. I shaved it in January, then went on a cruise, and I was still hounded for pictures.

JM: What’s the best part about being Santa Claus?

RP: The kids; they’re great. I’ll go to a grocery store, and they’ll hide in the cart and wave, and I’ll wave and they’ll giggle. I’ll ask them if they’re being good, and they’ll say yes, and it’s just a great feeling. I love seeing them happy.

JM: Was there any training involved in becoming Santa Claus?

RP: No—that comes with the job. Just smile and be happy. But it’s not the easiest job on earth. It’s like owning a bar—it’s not what it pretends to be. Santa can never be grouchy.

JM: What are the typical requests from kids?

RP: Most of them are for expensive toys. Kids are so smart these days. I’ve been asked for things—I don’t know what they are. Some say they didn’t get the toy they wanted last year. I say, “Tell your father to clean the chimney! And forget the milk; leave scotch.”

JM: Do they ever lose control of themselves?

RP: Screaming, shouting, yes, Bodily function loss, never once. But I’ve had more problems with big guys sitting on my lap. Guys like to do it. Everyone wants to sit on Santa’s lap.

JM: As Santa, you travel quite a bit. How do people react in other countries?

RP: Santa is huge in China. People around the world treat me differently than in the US. They’re more respectful, more observant. The kids are fantastic. There’s no such thing as bad kids, just bad parents. I’ve been in restaurants, and people push me over and ask for my pictures. So, I’m supposed to drop everything for them. It’s mind-boggling how intrusive people are in this country.

Back home, Nardone’s retail business, like most others in the area, had been experiencing a visible shift: shoppers were more hesitant to buy, and some weren’t coming in at all. Says Nardone, an Andover native, “When I saw how busy the consignment shops were, it was like, duh.”

In the spring, she launched a consignment “closet” in the back of Gigi’s to an overwhelming response; in June, the closet was given its own storefront a few doors down. Tiny but well-arranged, Nardone’s Chic Consignment Closet deals in designer and upscale clothing, shoes, and accessories no more than a few years old—a recent trip saw a silk and tulle Diane von Furstenburg skirt for $60, a Jimmy Choo tote for $600, and racks upon racks of designer denim starting at $50. Recession or not, Nardone says the store’s already a smash hit.

“We’re all women, we love to shop, we love new items, but we just don’t have that income anymore,” she says.

Consigners, meanwhile, earn 40 percent of their items’ sale. “It’s a win-win for everybody.” Chic Consignment Closet, 46 Main St., Andover, 978-474-1755, www.chicconsignmentcloset.com.

A Fine Vintage, Izzy’s Reborn debuts

Economic downturn is the mother of reinvention at Andover boutique Izzy’s Emporium, where owner Leigh Heffron, a former fashion stylist and self-described amateur historian, has launched a line of reworked vintage, called Izzy’s Reborn. Created with store creative director Giovanni Capato, vintage coats and blazers are “reborn” with new linings, modern tailoring, vintage buttons, and other retro embellishments. Like everything in Izzy’s, prices remain affordable—a reworked plaid blazer from the 1970s might sell for around $200, a relative steal in the world of vintage—and 10 percent of proceeds from Izzy’s Reborn will go to charity. “The hardest part for me might actually be letting go,” jokes Heffron, wistfully modeling a cherry-red blazer that was custom fitted for her, but available for sale. This is a recession, after all. Izzy’s Emporium, 21 Barnard St., Andover, 978-475-0194, izzys-emporium.com.

Walking into Andover Eye Care is a lot like strolling into a neighborhood pub. Everyone knows your name and there’s always someone laughing. Most if the time, it’s Todd Berberian, the salt-and-peppered, well-dressed, and often unshaven owner of this modern eye glasses shop tucked into the corner an old building off Andover’s Main Street. If he’s not adjusting the frames to fit a customer’s particular features, he’s jostling between display cases answering questions about prescription lenses, frames for children, or Oakley goggles for snowboarding. On one occasion, he even performed an adjustment on a 101-year-old customer in her car outside the shop. Then there’s the time he was named “Hottest Bachelor” by a local publication. Bring that up with Berberian and you’ll likely get a shrug of the shoulders and a quick change of topics.

Always with a smile, and always with a story, Berberian is the consummate business owner. But more than that, he’s a designer. After years of selling other manufacturers’ eyewear, Berberian finally decided to break out on his own and design frames that not only perform well, but give the wearer a fashionable leg up, so to speak, from the nose up. Berberian’s new line of eyewear is called Todd Rogers and his marketing, a lot like his personality, has been anything but traditional. Advertising has been minimal. In fact, the first ad he ran didn’t even showcase the frames: it was merely a photo taken from behind a tattooed man (Berberian) and his dog. These days, the Todd Rogers line is the second most popular line in his store and he’s currently working on a line of sunglasses. I had the chance to sit down with Berberian to discuss his line of eyewear, what inspires him, and what motivates him.

How did this all come about?
I’ve been an optician for 19 years. I used to fiddle with glasses in the basement. I always thought that if companies modeled them differently it would make for better glasses, especially when it came to fashion. One day I approached a friend of mine and said “Let’s launch our own line.” He said no. Two weeks later I was in New York at an optical show and I gave him samples to design but I wasn’t happy with his production. So I started visiting manufacturers in Europe (Italy, France, New York) over a four year period – nothing was good enough. I must have sat down with 40 manufacturers. I was looking for something that meshed with me. Someone who had personality, dedication, ability, and someone who understood the business. After all that traveling, I had shapes galore. I whittled it down, sat on my back porch, and went though colors and shapes.

So how did you pick THE ONE?
It all came down to how quickly the manufacturers got back to me, how easily accessible they were, and how the samples came out. But basically, I was looking for a good product that’s made well, that fits well, that sells well, that has the classic design that everyone wants.

Who is the typical Todd Rogers customer?
I have teenage girls buy them, as well as 20-70-year-olds. Everyone can relate to it. I do a lot of charcoal drawings. I just turned 40 in August and feel like I’m finally growing into myself. I finally realized that I’m good at this. At first, I put no advertising into it, and no one in the store could tell anyone the frames were mine. The first week in the store – it just blew up. People wanted the Todd Rogers right away.

What’s the best part about being a designer?
Seeing an end product – opening the box and seeing the piece that I’ve taken from birth. Also walking down the street and seeing people wearing my line. One time, my friend called me from his cell phone on the street in New York City the second he saw someone with a pair of my frames on. It was great.

What keeps you motivated?
Years ago, frames started out being round and brown, plain frames. There weren’t a lot of eyewear designers out there who created designs on their own. I’m a brand within a brand – creating a look, a lifestyle brand that’s coming from the optician’s side. What is it that’s going to make this fit better, for prescription lenses? And look better? That’s what I ask myself. I’m trying to build a brand – something that gives you feeling and emotion. It’s amazing how the shape of a frame can completely change the way your face looks. —Jack Morris

ANDOVER – April 14, 2009 – In this down economy, women are looking for ways to keep their style current while dealing with their shrinking wallets. Gigi’s announces the launch of their new Chic Consignment Closet, the creative way for recessionistas to turn their closets into cash or maintain their chicness on a diminished budget. Located in Gigi’s boutique, the Chic Consignment Closet offers new and gently used designer dresses, jeans, handbags, jewelry and shoes at 1/3 to 1/4 of their original retail price.

“It’s very popular to shop in consignment stores now due to the economy and the demand for budget-friendly shopping alternatives.” said Lisa Nardone, Owner of Gigi’s. “ I wanted to make it more of a boutique shopping experience than a traditional consignment retail outlet. “

The Chic Consignment Closet gives women and girls a way to clean out their closets by selling their gently used designer items for cash. They accept juniors and women’s clothing, accessories, handbags, jewelry and special occasion dresses such as Prom. All items have less than two years old and from contemporary designers such as Nanette Lepore, Milly, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Theory, D&G, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Prada, True Religion, Citizens and Seven to name a few. Once items have been sold, the consignor will be paid 50% of the selling price. Whatever is not sold after 90 days is donated to charity.

“With Prom season in full bloom, we are encouraging girls to bring in their recently worn designer dresses to exchange for another dress,” said Nardone. “Most girls wear a Prom dress once and then it sits in her closet so this gives her an option to pass on the dress or swap it for a new one.”

The Chic Consignment Closet is now accepting spring and summer items by appointment on Monday’s from 10:00 and 2:00.

For more information on becoming a consignor, please contact Gigi’s at: (978) 475-1277, or visit: www.chicconsigment.com

These past couple of weekends have been a real treat (yesterday excluded) for anyone who loves the outdoors. As an avid mountain biker, I’ve ridden all over New England and in the mountains out west, but it’s my hometown trails that I always come back to. These days, it’s hard to beat the miles and miles of singletrack in Harold Parker State Forest here in Andover. Every time I ride there, I find new trails and there’s always another rider or two to point me in the right direction if I get lost. I even had a guy give me his GPS map last week in the middle of a trail.

If you’ve never been to Harold Parker, I highly recommend it, even if you don’t ride a mountain bike. There are plenty of great trails and lots of ponds for swimming, boating, and fishing.

And if you do ride, here’s a (somewhat bumpy) look at some of the trails. I’m pretty certain I ran into this group at some point on Saturday.

In the last year, my bra size has been guesstimated at 32C, 32D, 34A, 34B, 32B, and 34C, and I’ve got a drawer jammed with lacy underthings to prove it. Some of them may actually fit, though I couldn’t tell you which.

Neither can most women. The statistic most often cited, from Oprah to the New York Times, is that 85 percent of us wear the wrong bra size, which can cause back pain, sagging, and aesthetic disaster.

“The right bra should be snug, with room for no more than a finger or two inside the band, and your ribcage—not your shoulders—should bear the weight,” says Merit Tukiainen, owner of Night & Day Lingerie. The store’s two locations in Andover and Newburyport specialize in fit (other area stores that offer bra fittings include Nordstrom, French Lessons, and Andrea Raymond Apparel). “Most women wear bras that are too big around, and too small in the cup,” says Tukiainen.

At Night & Day’s Andover location, I stand in the dressing room in jeans and a pretty lace bra by Natori, size 32C, while Tukiainen gives me the once over, twice. “It’s cute,” she says, “and fits around, but see this extra material at the top?” According to Tukiainen’s tape measure, I’m a 32B. Bras are sized not unlike pants, however, and just as a two at Ann Taylor might mean a six at Calvin Klein, cup and girth often vary between brands. Which is why a trained eye, your significant other excluded, can be more than just a luxury.

“One woman started crying when she saw herself in the mirror,” recalls Tukiainen. “She’d been wearing 38D. She left wearing 34F, and looked ten to fifteen years younger just by virtue of her breasts being where they should be.” Over the course of an hour, I’m handed more than 20 bras, and together Tukiainen and I decide which are keepers—her eye towards fit, mine toward form (nude or black, lightly padded, and very simple).

The process is remarkably easy, and a lot less touchy-feely than I imagined. I leave with a $90 Chantelle bra in a practical nude. In it, my clothes look better. My shoulders and back more relaxed. And my breasts, by God, a little bit perkier.

If the Bra Fits… Clues Hide and Peek you’re wearing the wrong size.
1. You adjust your bra constantly. The band of the bra should lie between your shoulder and your elbow, says Tukiainen. If the straps fall throughout the day, your bra’s too big.
2. Your cups runneth over (or under). You want your breasts to completely fill the bra. This may mean wearing a bigger cup size than you’re used to, or tossing bras whose cups have stretched beyond usefulness.
3. The bra rides up your back or digs into your shoulders. “Your bra should be snug,” says Tukiainen. “Snug means it’s supportive. Even if you have to deal with a little bit of bulge.” Too little support around can put too much pressure on strap-bearing shoulders.
4. You remove your bra as soon as you get home. If it’s that uncomfortable, says Tukiainen, something’s wrong.

Washing machines, cameras, and luggage to be precise, a far cry from the glitz and sparkle that can currently be found in each of the store’s display cases.

It was from these humble beginnings, however, that owner Steven Leed first ventured into the jewelry business. Leed’s father opened a small secondfloor office space in Lawrence in 1948 and after graduating from college, Leed then took over the business in 1975. His vision was to turn it into a jewelry store powerhouse, a business that sells the idea of luxury from the world’s top designers. That vision also included moving the store to a new location.

Today, customers at Royal Jewelers on Main Street in Andover are treated to not only plenty of options, but also some of the finest jewelry in the world. Endless polished counters offer up designs created right at Royal’s downstairs workshop, including tasteful, classic engagement rings, innovative contemporary pieces, and even the store’s own signature perfume, Royal No. 5, created for Leed’s sister, Paula (who is equal partner in the store), on her birthday one year as a party favor to guests.

Wearing a David Yurman silk and silver bracelet and an elegant double-faced Swiss watch, Leed talks about the shift in the industry, one he says he predicted long ago, comparing it to the direction of the fashion industry.

“Well-known designers like Isaac Mizrahi are creating clothing designs for lower rent stores like Target,” he says. “The same thing has happened in our business.” Designer jewelry has become very popular and by looking around Royal, it’s not hard to see why.

Customers can browse through collections from top contemporary jewelry designers David Yurman and Hearts on Fire, as well as watches from exclusive

Swiss designers like Vacheron Constantin, and many others. In fact, at the personal request of Leed, Yurman designed and opened his first in-store boutique at Royal which, set in its own area off from the rest of the store, gives Yurman fanatics a place call home.

Not to be outdone, Royal’s Hearts on Fire Café puts the diamond enthusiast at ease, where customers can relax with a cup of coffee or the Royal Jewelers-labeled bottled water. These diamonds come with the claim to be the most perfect cut in the world and Michael Lebowitz, vice president of sales and merchandising, says they’ve won the claim in a court of law. Based on what facts? The scientific assessment of light performance, or, brilliance—the return of white light, pinpoint colors, and mosaic flashes to emit every color of the rainbow.

But flashy displays and marketing tag lines only go so far. Staying in business over the long haul means building a trust and a connection with customers. That’s part of the reason that collectors gather at Royal on Saturday mornings to browse $20,000 wristwatches and why engaged couples regularly come in together to choose the eternal symbol of their commitment. The store sometimes gets so involved in making people feel special that they once flew an employee with a gift-wrapped birthday present—a diamond ring, of course—to Nantucket where a docking yacht and its owner were eagerly awaiting the delivery.

“It’s not unusual for us to do something like that,” says Leed. “Paula and I truly love this business—the people, the gems, the jewelry, the Swiss watches,” says Leed. “We feel very fortunate to have grown up in Royal Jewelers and are honored to continue our family’s legacy.”

Despite the country’s general economic malaise in 2008, Leed’s holiday sales were even with the year before. “Amazing in this economy,” he says.

On a wintry Tuesday afternoon, the store is never empty as customers shop for new purchases or bring in items to be repaired. A well-dressed young man peruses the exclusive Ulysse Nardin case. “This one is a bridge between both sport and dress,”

Leed says, pulling out a pricey, but beautiful, watch. Leed says the secret to the store’s success on the North Shore for the past 60 years combines its selection of the world’s most beautiful designs with a customer-centered warmth. “It’s not about intimidation,” he says. “It’s more a sense of belonging.” Seconds later, the store owner excuses himself to greet a couple from Beverly Farms who have dropped by to have something repaired and to say hello.

Long-time customers of Royal benefit from having a hometown jeweler who knows their taste, especially at gift-buying time. “We already know what’s in their jewel boxes,” one employee says with a sly smile. An oath of confidentiality is as strict here as in any lawyer’s or accountant’s office, but ask around the store and you’ll hear more than a few engagement stories with everything from ring-bearing Santas to rigged Yankee Swaps. Royal employees have even found themselves acting as proposal consultants to more than one nervous would-be groom.

“The engagement ring is the symbol of the greatest love you can feel for someone,” says Lebowitz, “We sell happiness. We are in a celebratory business.”

Lebowitz says this while handing over a ring with a center stone that is what some call a “canary yellow” diamond, priced the same as a typical North Shore two bedroom condominium. He then pulls out of the case one of eight limited edition, 18 karat gold Jaquet Droz watches.

Lebowitz accompanies Leed to the watch houses in Switzerland at least once a year, where they relay the desires of their watch buying market. To give an idea of this exclusive world, Lebowitz says Rolex makes about a million watches a year, while Jaquet Droz rolls out only about 1,800.

Though this all can seem like a bit of indulgence or folly in a time of economic uncertainty, Lebowitz says people still feel a need to commemorate life’s important moments. “We still need to make ourselves happy. We still work hard and need to celebrate.”

By Teri Borseti, photographs by Bob O’Connor

More often than not, fine art is considered as an afterthought when building a home. It’s seen as a way
to add culture and life to the living space once the house is built. But the owners of this contemporized French manor in Andover actually built the house with a primary goal from the beginning of showcasing their extensive and prized art collection.

It was his reputation for building solid, beautifully customized homes that motivated the owners to contact
John T. Sarkis, president of Sarkis Development Company in Andover. “I started with architectural plans that
were drawn in Ohio. I worked closely with the owners to custom-design the 17,000 sq. ft. house over a period of 22 months,” Sarkis said.

Because of its size, the house presented many challenges. “We had to find the right spot on the lot to allow enough room for the pool, patio, and architecturally designed landscaping,” Sarkis explained. “The house is equipped with smart technology, which took a lot of coordinating, and when it came time to do the interior wood finish, I had five crews at a time working here.”

The “wow factor” begins with arched bronze front doors that open to the foyer, which has a 20-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling and a gracious double staircase. Floors and stairs are covered in black high-fleck granite. The
grandeur of the house is well matched by a stunning collection of art from around the world featuring large paintings and photographs, mixedmedia creations, sculptures, and one-of-a-kind Asian and African pieces,
many of which are displayed on pedestals and niches created by Sarkis.

There are whimsical surprises made from wood and glass in every room. At the top of the stairs is a dedicated gallery where multilayered track lighting illuminates each work of art perfectly. An art deco interior design can be found in places like the master bath, where German-crafted cabinets are covered with Amboyna burl, a veneer so rare it took six months for Sarkis to acquire enough of it to complete the job.

A home theater features 10 oversized reclining and vibrating chairs. There’s a wine cellar that stores 4,000-plus bottles behind doors originally housed in New York’s Plaza Hotel. There’s a uniquely shaped remote-controlled pool with waterfall, and a kitchen with an enormous horseshoeshaped center island.
According to Sarkis, “The exterior of the house and the interior floor plan are basically very traditional, but the materials used – textured sea-foam glass in the master bath, gilt-finish walls and colored glass sink basins in powder rooms – and the incredible art collection are what give it such a distinctive look.”

The lighted tray ceilings, moldings, arched entrances, and French doors are the perfect backdrop for eclectic
art-infused furniture and accessories. Subtle animal prints, brushed metal and granite finishes, mosaic tile, and contemporary light fixtures make for ideal accents. Sarkis said that the project was a challenge from start to finish but it was one that he was proud to manage. He’s glad to have it in his portfolio and he looks forward to taking on other projects that are just as creative.

If you were to invest in an oil painting for your home or office, you would take into account your color scheme, décor, taste, and budget. Tim Lindblad of Andover does the same sort of thing, only with a rather bigger budget than most people, because he does it for Boston Private Bank.

Lindblad is a vice president in the bank’s corporate real estate group. In his nine years there, he has led design and construction projects for the bank’s headquarters at Ten Post Office Square in Boston, as well as its offices in the Back Bay and Hingham. His most recent assignment has been to design the space for the bank’s new office in Beverly.

In many companies, a corporate decorator simply chooses paintings and photos similar to what hangs in the halls at the head office. But Lindblad, who has degrees in architectural history and art history, as well as a keen interest in historic preservation, wanted to do much more than that. He set out to research, identify, and buy items with direct ties to the area. Each piece needed to have a clear reason for being part of the ensemble. And the décor as a whole had to connect with the bank’s headquarters in Boston.

To accomplish this, Lindblad spent months researching the history of Beverly. He spent hours at the Beverly Public Library, at local museums, in antique shops, and online. He bargained with art dealers and local antique shops. All the hard work finally paid off in an office filled with paintings, artifacts, sculptures, and even a hand-crafted bronze spiral staircase in the foyer.

The office’s rich travertine floors, mahogany furnishings, grand staircase, and oriental silk tapestries connect it to the bank’s Post Office Square headquarters. But what truly distinguishes Lindblad’s project are the works of art that promote the rich history of the very ground on which the Beverly office stands, at 57 Enon St. (Route 1A). Through his research, Lindblad learned about a grant of land from King Charles I of England of 1,000 acres parceled out equally to five local planters in 1635. It is these five men for whom the bank’s major spaces are named – the Conant Gallery, the Woodbury Room, the Trask Room, the Balch Lounge for employees, and the Palfrey Room.

Tim carefully planned every purchase and determined where each painting would be hung. Every piece has a sense of place and purpose. The first floor of the bank is representative of Beverly in the 17th and 18th centuries. The second floor reflects 19th- and 20th-century Beverly. The first-floor conference rooms feature a painting of Washington’s fleet – “The Wolf Pack” – as well as other works of art that hark back to Beverly’s early maritime history. They also include botanical prints of sugar cane and nutmeg to typify Beverly’s extensive trade with the East and West Indies, China, Russia, and Spain.

The focal point of the foyer of the Beverly office is a large antique floor globe, chosen as a reminder of trade between Beverly and the larger world. Overhead, about a dozen botanical prints hang from bronze rods. The rods had been sitting in storage at the Post Office Square headquarters, where they had been part of the original heating system. They turned out to be just right for a new life in Beverly. Lindblad knew when he saw them that they would have a useful purpose someday. As usual, his foresight proved right.
