Marblehead

Marblehead is rich with history and so much more. By, Meryl D. Pearlstein

Part commuter town, part historical masterpiece, Marblehead occupies an envious position, overlooking one of the most picturesque sailing harbors in New England. Tiny and tony, Marblehead fills a hilly peninsula 17 miles up the coast from Boston, a site fishermen sparked to when they set up rough-and-tumble headquarters starting in the 1600s.

With a collection of nearly 300 preserved Colonial homes—fishermen’s cottages, captains’ residences and merchants’ mansions that wind up and down hills in varying shades of paint trim—Old Marblehead (to distinguish it from the newer, less-distinctive part of town) stands out for history buffs as the perfect immersion into New England’s pre-Revolutionary past. Many of the oldest homes, dating back to the town’s 1629 start, have windows hung so low that you’d swear the term “Peeping Tom” was invented here. Instead, this is a town of jovial and serious sailors, a town where it seems everyone who has a sea-facing historical home also has at least three pairs of boating shoes and is a member of one of the town’s six yacht clubs.

Dubbed “The Yachting Capital of the World” as well as the “Birthplace of the American Navy” under Colonel John Glover and General George Washington, Marblehead has always been a magnet for ocean lovers and beachgoers. Today, more of a resort destination than a working fishing village, Marblehead beckons with chilly waters that sparkle during the town’s century-old mid-summer Race Week, with its historic and modern sailboats also enjoyed by landlubbers from high perches in Chandler Hovey Park, Fort Sewall, and Crocker Park. Come winter, the town becomes a New England postcard, with a month-long Christmas celebration that entices both residents and visitors.

In any season, Marblehead is a town for exploring. Head straight to Old Marblehead, park your car wherever you can (it’s not easy), and wander along the narrow, twisting streets and public “ways of passage,” admiring the gorgeous architecture and breathing in Marblehead’s glorious sea air. Read the historic plaques on the many homes from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s, and stop to visit the 1768 Jeremiah Lee House, a majestic Georgian residence that epitomizes Marblehead’s success in pre-Revolutionary commerce. Refuel with a bowl of chowder or some fried clams at Maddie’s Sail Loft, the sailor’s favorite, and imagine yourself getting ready to face the Red Coats or a long day at sea.

Marblehead’s active involvement in the American Revolution, and later in the War of 1812 and the Civil War, adds to the town’s historic importance and intrigue. Quaint, cultured, and proud, Old Marblehead hasn’t changed much in 400 years; residents today are as much in love with its beautiful coastline, sailboat-dotted harbor, quirky streets, and ocean charms as were its earliest settlers.

Winter Wonderland Marblehead is a hotbed of holiday activity—first and foremost of which is its annual Christmas Walk.

Salem might get dibs on Halloween, but Marblehead is all about Christmas. Tens of thousands of people flock to the town to share in the magic of Marblehead’s winter arts festival and Christmas events. Kicked off by a holiday shopping preview party to motivate residents to stay local for shopping, the Marblehead Christmas Walk event is officially christened on Friday night by the tree lighting and caroling at Abbot Hall. The next morning, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at State Street Landing in a lobster boat painted red (of course).

The festivity really starts “moving” with the high-spirited parade of costumed kids and residents later that afternoon. Accompanied by musicians, many making a special pilgrimage to Marblehead to participate in this event each year, the parade meanders from the landing to Washington Street and Atlantic Avenue.
This year’s 40th annual Christmas Walk is scheduled December 2-5 with events extending onto the two following Saturdays as well. An Artisans’ Holiday Marketplace, hayrides, and refreshments are highlights. There’s no need to do your Christmas shopping at the mall if you’re visiting Marblehead; the often nautically themed arts and crafts here are much more distinctive, and the hospitality, smiles, cookies, and warm drinks offered by residents are personal “gifts” that are hard to resist.

If the weather turns mild rather than wintry, you might even see people heading to the Causeway to watch the waves at Devereux Beach and collect seashells instead of count snowflakes. Thinking about catching the Marblehead holiday spirit? Book an inn or B&B well in advance so you won’t be disappointed.

The Marblehead Rotary Club was honored to commemorate National Black History Month with a presentation on Thursday February 25, 2010 by Dr. Edward Robinson, a retired radiologist from Salem Hospital and a veteran Lt. Commander of the US Navy with combat service in Vietnam.  Dr. Robinson, who was born in Lynn, earned a B.A. from Yale University and a M. Earlier in February, the Marblehead Rotary Club hosted Elizabeth Macomber, Vice President for Philanthropy for the Hospice of the North Shore, who spoke about “end of life issues” and Sam Scott of the American Liver Foundation who gave valuable tips for sustainable liver health through a low-fat diet, moderate alcohol intake and exercise.

Vegetable Gardening – Planning, Preparing & Maintaining Your Victory Garden Talk by Betty Sanders

The Abbot Public Library welcomes Massachusetts Master Gardener, Betty Sanders. Betty will speak about establishing a vegetable garden and provide tips and ideas for your own victory garden. There’s nothing like knowing exactly how the vegetables you eat were grown!

Betty Sanders believes that careful planning and preparation can take vegetable gardening from drudgery to fun. She emphasizes the planning of everything from size, location and style of vegetable garden to the need to prepare that garden for success.

After a career as a chemist, Betty Sanders has returned to her first love, gardening. A Massachusetts Master Gardener, she has lectured on a wide range of garden topics for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and at the New England Flower Show. She has designed award-winning (and more importantly grant-winning) roadside gardens in her hometown, a memorial garden for a police and fire station and the Master Gardener exhibits for the New England Flower Show in 2007 and 2008. She maintains her own two-acre garden which was selected to be part of the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program in 2008.

Betty finds herself increasingly focused on techniques to reduce the use of chemicals in gardening and landscaping. She also looks for ways to limit the need for water and prefers the use of native plants in landscapes. She is passionate about the many opportunities offered by container gardening and is an avid vegetable gardener.

As part of the program, “Grow Food for Friends” will kick off its campaign, to provide the Salem Mission with homegrown, fresh produce, donated by members of the community.

Location: Lee Mansion – Marblehead

Description: The 1768 Jeremiah Lee Mansion, Marblehead’s magnificent Colonial landmark, opens for the season on June 2nd, 2009.

A large part of this year’s celebration is directed toward the preservation of the Lee Mansion. “Over the past 100 years, donations and grants have funded conservation efforts aimed at repairing and restoring the structure’s paints, wallpapers, and windows,” says Museum Director, Pam Peterson. “The window restoration is being completed, the South and West sides of the Mansion are being repaired and painted, and the two chimneys are being restored. All of this work will help preserve the Mansion for the next generation and the next hundred years.

The Marblehead Historical Society, which achieved Museum status in 2003 and is now known as the Marblehead Museum & Historical Society, plans a summer of festivities surrounding the centennial.  Events include an elegant gala to kick off the celebrations, and an accompanying exhibition at the Museum Galleries across the street from the Mansion.

A video presentation of Town Historian Bette Hunt’s recollections about the Lee Mansion is planned, a schedule of lectures will be announced, and enhanced multimedia additions to the Lee Mansion area of the Museum website, www.marbleheadmuseum.org/LeeMansion

“The Lee Mansion is a wonderful destination for summer tourists and houseguests,” adds Lee Mansion Curator, Judy Anderson.   “As we celebrate the centennial, we hope that Marbleheaders who have not visited the Mansion in recent years will take advantage of the opportunity to stop by, and renew their commitment to this magnificent piece of American history.”

Guided tours of eighteen furnished rooms on three floors give visitors an overview of the daily life, surroundings, and occupations of Marblehead residents. Tours are offered Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10am – 4pm.  Admission is $5 per person.

This year marks a very special occasion – the Centennial of the Mansion’s purchase by the Marblehead Historical Society.

New Store Opening

nsjj09_surfaces_31Surfaces Lifestyle & Design— not just your average Marblehead antique store.

By Jacqueline Dixon

During times of economic hardship, it is refreshing to stumble across a boutique whose owners dare to charge through it all with a smile. And that is exactly what Mary Luke and Lisa Ciccia of Surfaces Lifestyle & Design in Marblehead intend to do. In fact, they opened their business this past December and they freely admit that they’ve never been happier.

nsjj09_surfaces_21With an ample blend of antique artifacts and various contemporary pieces, Surfaces is an antique lover’s dream. The shop offers upscale antique home furnishings such as a Victorian loveseat ($350), a cherry linen press bureau ($595), and an exquisite Chinoiserie piano ($4,000), along with contemporary items such as handbags ($30 and up), a designer shoe line ($90 and up), and fashionably crafted martini glasses ($5 and up).

Looking less like a store and more like an actual home, Surfaces maintains an element of comfort and elegance, yet it has an underlying industrial presence with cement floors and brick walls that cannot be overlooked. Soft music and clever lighting make for a home-like environment that encourages browsing, relaxing, and chatting with its welcoming owners.

nsjj09_surfaces_11Surfaces offers pieces from many European artists who are currently living on the North Shore, including a dazzling jewelry line from a Czech artist in Rockport. Many of the items offered here are handcrafted, one-of-a-kind treasures. “Keep it beautiful. We don’t want anything in our store that we wouldn’t want in our own home,” Luke chuckles. She also adds that they plan to build a food and beverage section to the store as well as a collection of natural crystals and a new line of shoes.

“Having fun is what it’s about, and this is fun,” says Ciccia. “It’s not work for us.” Surfaces Lifestyle & Design, 33 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, 781-639-9933.

“Corks & Forks” noche de los tapas: Tapas Night at Shubie’s

Title: “Corks & Forks” noche de los tapas: Tapas Night at Shubie’s
Location: Shubie’s – 16 Atlantic Ave. – Marblehead
Link out: Click here
Description: Join Shubie’s in Marblehead Friday, May 15th, 2009 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for a night a Tapas prepared by Chef Lynne Aronson.

Noche de los tapas will feature a flight of Spanish wines accompanied by a variety of Chef Lynne Aronsonʼs flavorful Spanish tapas. Enjoy empanadas and camerone tortallitas. Taste wines including El Coto, Rioja and Burgans Albarino, Rias Baixas. Bring friends and create your own tapeo – or moving party – on your own tapas and wine-tasting stroll. Small Bites. Bold Flavors.
The history of tapas dates back to Spanish King Alfonso the 10th who is said to have issued a decree that
all tabernas must serve a bit of food or tapa with each glass of wine. Tapa is derived from the verb tapar -
to cover. Customarily eaten standing up, tapas originated as savory treats such as a jamon or cheese
placed over the top of every glass, protecting it from flies and dust. Today, tapas comprises everything
from vegetable dishes, to seafood to canapes – from the very simple to more complex. And donʼt fret -
Tapas Night at Shubieʼs will be fly and dust-free so you wonʼt be required to balance your tapas on your
wine glass. Great Options for Every Occasion.
“We are excited to be bringing a bit of Spanish flair to the North Shore on May 9th,” said Carol Shube, coowner of Shubieʼs. “This is just the first in a series of events weʼll be hosting to highlight all of the amazing prepared foods created by Chef Lynne Aronson who I truly feel is a culinary gift to our area.” Added George Shube, Shubieʼs co-owner, “We have the perfect selection of wine varieties to accompany all food options here at Shubieʼs as well as the food you prepare yourself. Weʼre happy to suggest the perfect wine for any meal or occasion.”
Tapas Night is the first in a series of Shubieʼs palate-pleasing events planned for spring and summer. The cost is $18 per person. Whatʼs next? Stay tuned. Hint: weʼll be heading east from Spain.

The Sea Gull Shop of Marblehead Opens Artists Loft

MARBLEHEAD – April 2009 - The Sea Gull Shop in Marblehead has opened its “Artists Loft” featuring renowned North Shore artists. The Loft, which is located on the second floor of the Seagull Shop has a myriad of mixed media for sale and will be continually revolving artists.

According to store proprietor Elizabeth Laub, “We are ecstatic over the quality of artists that we have attracted here. They are excited to be in our community since many of their pieces capture the essence of the North Shore. We opened the Loft with a wide variety of artwork which includes beautiful paintings of Marblehead, as well as jewelry, photography, and much more.”

“Upstairs at The Sea Gull, an Artisans Loft came about from wanting to showcase local artisans while maintaining the shop’s mission of being ‘purveyors of fine gifts’. The Seas Gull has carried over with what we feel our shoo reflects, essentially the feeling of Marblehead by choosing fine artists that bring a passion to their craft. We are showcasing them in their newly renovated sun-filled upstairs, creating a wonderful space to view the fine are and find the perfect gift for any occassion.” explained Ms. Laub.

The Sea Gull has opened the loft with the artwork of Back Bay photographer Jen Matson, known for photographing nature and outdoor imagery. “We are excited that Jen recently spent the afternoon in Marblehead with her camera!” said Ms. Laub. “In addition we are thrilled to have pieces created by Michelle and Bill Champitto, owners of ‘Fresh Cut Glass’. They are the creators of artisan crafted glass art windows, infusion jars, wall scones, and more.

Also, The Gull Shop has worked with Karen Roberts, a Marblehead artist who paints on canvas of all sizes. “Karen uses the coastline as inspiration for her beautiful works. She also has included hand-carved shore birds, created by her father, Bill Roberts.”

The loft also includes handmade jewelry by Diane Kelley of Winthrop. All of her pieces use the finest quality of crystal, vintage glass, recycled glass, and semi precious stones. Gift buyers will love Sandy Guys’ Merrimack Valley Essentials, a selection of handmade soaps and body products made with all natural ingredients. “Sandy was a featured ‘Secret Shopper’ in the Boston Globe, February 2000,” said Ms. Laub.

Another featured artist, Mary Bowles and Kerri Bromberger. The two only use genuine natural, non-endangered seashells and sea life to create mosaics, ornaments, night-lights and many other gorgeous items including mirrors.

The Sea Gull Shop is located at 146 Washington Street in Marblehead.

Janet Swaysland of Beeline Labs ‘Swayed’ the Crowd at the Marblehead Chamber Business Breakfast Forum

Marblehead – April 15, 2009 – The Marblehead Chamber of Commerce hosted a Business Breakfast Forum “Web 2.0 – PR Tactics You Can Use Now,” presented by Janet Swaysland. The well-attended forum  focused on Social Media, online conversation and participation, and the power shift from companies to consumers.

Janet Swaysland is a co-founder and partner at Beeline Labs, a marketing strategy firm that helps organizations integrate social media principles into business programs and practices. According to Swaysland, there is a new balance of power and consumers are more in control these days. “Seventy-eight percent of consumers trust the advice of other consumers,” said Swaysland, who encouraged the audience to trust one another and each other. To a small business, it means huge new opportunities to get your business noticed, get new customers, and better understand what the customers you already have really like or don’t like about what you offer.

swaysland-bbf-4-15-09
Swaysland offered suggestions on how to help grow your business by engaging people online. The first step is to “social modify” your website and take a fresh look at it.  Then find out where your customers are and be present there. Make sure to “activate your advocates” by using word of mouth techniques and encourage your customers to write reviews and comments. Swaysland also advised connecting both online and offline, reminding the audience that “more online connections are driving offline get-togethers.” Lastly, “listen, learn, adapt and repeat” – keep searching and try something new.

The seemingly overwhelming number of popular methods currently in use online (including Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Ning, Plaxo and Spoke) prompted one audience member to ask, “How do you let this not take over your life?” Swaysland replied that she herself “dabbles” and uses some online tools as searching resources but reminded the audience that “you don’t have to do everything, just do something consistently.” Swaysland drove her point home with a Power Point presentation that highlighted actual website content of some local businesses and how they do or do not effectively incorporate many of the tactics and suggestions mentioned in the Forum.

Throughout the presentation, as well as during a question and answer session following the forum, the audience was able to address Swaysland with their own questions and comments on many of the topics and tools presented in the Forum.

Description: The Marblehead Festival of Arts annual Volunteer Information Party will be held Sunday, April 26th, 2009 from 2pm to 4pm, at the Corinthian Yacht Club, located at 1 Nahant Street on Marblehead Neck.

The gathering is a great way to learn about current opportunities to assist the Festival, an all-volunteer organization comprised of more than forty committees working to produce the region’s premier summer arts festival, to be held July 1st–5th, 2009.

Volunteering for the Festival is “an opportunity to make things happen, to add to the growth of the Festival,” said Sandra Broughton, co-chair of the Festival’s Volunteer Recruitment Committee. On a more personal level, she added, “It’s a great way to meet people.” Light refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be available.

The range of volunteer opportunities is broad, and many can fit the volunteers’ time schedules. Even those who don’t have much spare time “can work as little as an hour at a time, depending on their schedules,” according to Sandra.

Pre-Festival volunteer opportunities include planning the Champagne Reception (on June 28th), setting up art exhibits, and assisting with the festival events publicity.

During the Festival, volunteers staff art exhibits and information booths, run events such as the model boat workshop and the sand sculpture competition, and operate the Festival’s Logo Store which sells T-shirts, glasses, and other products branded with the Festival’s logo.

Support committee opportunities include helping manage the Festival’s database, working on the Festival’s printed Program, fundraising, and assisting the Festival’s treasurer.

Chamber Business Breakfast Forum on April 15th

All are invited to join the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce at the next Chamber Business Breakfast Forum on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 at 8am at Maddie’s Sail Loft, located at 15 State Street.

About the Presentation – “Web 2.0 — How to grow your business by engaging people online” Think of the Internet “1.0″ as websites that essentially put brochures and information online (along with some email and shopping.) Web 2.0, also dubbed “social media,” is all about conversation online, it’s about participation — and a power shift from companies to consumers, as consumers now have the ability to rate products and places, get information when, where and how they prefer, act as “citizen journalists” and make choices based on a whole new world of social interaction. What does this all mean to a small business? It means huge new opportunities to get your business noticed, get new customers, and understand better what the customers you already have really like, or don’t, about what you offer — all for very little cost, by the way.

In this session you will learn:
> The new rules of marketing and PR
> The new tools — rethinking your website and getting to know Twitter, Facebook, Yelp!…
> 5 things to start doing now, and 3 things to stop doing
> And what local businesses are getting it right (and some with untapped opportunity, shall we say)

janet-swayslandAbout Presenter Janet Swaysland – Janet is a co-founder and partner at Beeline Labs, a marketing strategy and services firm that helps companies understand and benefit from how “Web 2.0″ (or “social media”) changes the way they work with customers, employees and the community. Janet was previously president of the U.S. region at Brodeur Worldwide, a global public relations agency, served as Vice President of U.S. Communications for The Body Shop, and was SVP of the public relations group at Mullen. She lives in Old Town with her husband, 16 year old daughter, 101 year old mother in law and Sammy the dog.
