That’s what we thought. Charlie Giacobbe, personal auto shopper and consultant, is out to change that.

“The sales manager wants to find out what the most money is that a customer will pay for a car. I try to find what the least amount of money is that the sales manager will accept to sell his car,” Giacobbe explains.

Giacobbe has been in the car business all his life, first as a salesman in Somerville in 1976, then later as a sales manager in Woburn. These days, he helps car buyers on the North Shore get the best possible deal available. So, who hires a personal auto shopper? Just about anyone who hates the car-buying process, those who simply don’t have time, and those who feel they aren’t good negotiators. Basically, anyone.

“I’ll tell my client where we need to be, based on my research of the car for it to be a fair deal,” he says. “We’ll make an offer that we know is below what the dealership can sell it for.”

For example, a recent client came to him looking to trade an ‘01 Volkswagen Jetta for a new Honda Fit. Giacobbe knew his client was getting charged with a $500 markup. The dealer offered him $2,800 for the Jetta. When the Honda Fit arrived at the dealership, it came with navigation, a $1,300 option that was not part of the deal. They said they’d only charge him $500 for it. That’s when Giacaobbe got the phone call.

“I called the dealership. The guy knew me. He said he’d sell him the Fit at list price and would take another look at his Jetta. I called some wholesalers and they told me it was worth $4,000 so I told my client to ask for $4,500 for the trade. The sales manager agreed, two weeks later, his car came without the navigation this time, and everyone was happy.”

In another instance, Giacobbe was called to help with the purchase of an ‘08 Cadillac SRX for $32,000. After looking at some of the incentives, Giacobbe discovered the ’09 version (a $46,000 car) could be purchased for $31,000.

In the end, it’s all a game and knowing how to play should increase your chances at scoring the best possible deal. Sometimes, though, it’s really a matter of who budges first. Giacobbe says when in doubt, walk out. —Jack Morris

Charlie Giacobbe’s fee is $250 for vehicles listed under $50,000 and 0.5 percent of the MSRP price for vehicles over $50,000; sales logistics.net, 781-983-2321.

Gearing Up Five tips for buying the right car:

1. Buy in July and December. The most incentives are given in July and manufactures in December are trying to vie for top sales claims for that year. 2. If you can’t wait for those months, buy closer to the end of each month. 3. Never fall in love with the car. Always say, “This might work for me if the price is right.” 4. Walk out if you don’t feel comfortable with the price. 5. Research the vehicle online prior to purchase (kbb.com or edmunds.com).

Which Enviro-Friendly Auto Should You Buy?

We asked Giacobbe to select the top green vehicle available for the average North Shore family. He excluded the Toyota Prius because“size, gas mileage, and price put it in a class that no other manufacturer currently competes with.” See below for his choice.

Picture 1: 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, MSRP $26,275. Pros: Lowest MSRP, longest wheelbase, longest powertrain warranty, Onstar. Cons: Lowest city mileage at 26 mpg.

Picture 2: 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid, MSRP $26,870. Pros: 33 city, 34 hwy MPG, longest rear leg room in class. Cons: Lowest rated horsepower of three at 147, federal hybrid tax credit no longer available on Toyota (the only one in the group).

Picture 3: 2009 Nissan Altima, MSRP $27,345. Pros: 198 hp is best in group, 35 city/33 hwy is best city mileage, 20-gallon gas tank is largest of group. Cons: 16-inch wheels, highest MSRP of group.

“My recommendation would be the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The 2008 North American Car of the Year and the winner of the 2008 JD Power “Highest Rated Midsize Car in Initial Quality”, the Malibu offers a number of advantages over the Toyota and Nissan competitors. The 17″ wheels and 112.3″ wheelbase lead to the best ride and handling of the group. While the city mileage is the lowest, the highway mileage of 34 mpg is better than the Nissan and the same as the Toyota. With the lowest MSRP of the group, current incentives can bring the actual purchase price below $23,000. The horsepower is in the middle of the group at 164 and the powertrain warranty extends 40,000 miles beyond that of the Toyota or Nissan (5 year 100,000 mile powertrain). The standard OnStar offers cutting edge communications in an emergency situation, will help police locate your stolen car, unlock your doors for you or even to download directions to guide you if you’re lost. I love this feature! Navigation systems are not required. XM radio is also standard. As an added bonus, purchasing from an American auto manufacturer supports 78 american jobs per car sold as nearly 3 million U.S. jobs depend on automakers.”

In the last year, my bra size has been guesstimated at 32C, 32D, 34A, 34B, 32B, and 34C, and I’ve got a drawer jammed with lacy underthings to prove it. Some of them may actually fit, though I couldn’t tell you which.

Neither can most women. The statistic most often cited, from Oprah to the New York Times, is that 85 percent of us wear the wrong bra size, which can cause back pain, sagging, and aesthetic disaster.

“The right bra should be snug, with room for no more than a finger or two inside the band, and your ribcage—not your shoulders—should bear the weight,” says Merit Tukiainen, owner of Night & Day Lingerie. The store’s two locations in Andover and Newburyport specialize in fit (other area stores that offer bra fittings include Nordstrom, French Lessons, and Andrea Raymond Apparel). “Most women wear bras that are too big around, and too small in the cup,” says Tukiainen.

At Night & Day’s Andover location, I stand in the dressing room in jeans and a pretty lace bra by Natori, size 32C, while Tukiainen gives me the once over, twice. “It’s cute,” she says, “and fits around, but see this extra material at the top?” According to Tukiainen’s tape measure, I’m a 32B. Bras are sized not unlike pants, however, and just as a two at Ann Taylor might mean a six at Calvin Klein, cup and girth often vary between brands. Which is why a trained eye, your significant other excluded, can be more than just a luxury.

“One woman started crying when she saw herself in the mirror,” recalls Tukiainen. “She’d been wearing 38D. She left wearing 34F, and looked ten to fifteen years younger just by virtue of her breasts being where they should be.” Over the course of an hour, I’m handed more than 20 bras, and together Tukiainen and I decide which are keepers—her eye towards fit, mine toward form (nude or black, lightly padded, and very simple).

The process is remarkably easy, and a lot less touchy-feely than I imagined. I leave with a $90 Chantelle bra in a practical nude. In it, my clothes look better. My shoulders and back more relaxed. And my breasts, by God, a little bit perkier.

If the Bra Fits… Clues Hide and Peek you’re wearing the wrong size.
1. You adjust your bra constantly. The band of the bra should lie between your shoulder and your elbow, says Tukiainen. If the straps fall throughout the day, your bra’s too big.
2. Your cups runneth over (or under). You want your breasts to completely fill the bra. This may mean wearing a bigger cup size than you’re used to, or tossing bras whose cups have stretched beyond usefulness.
3. The bra rides up your back or digs into your shoulders. “Your bra should be snug,” says Tukiainen. “Snug means it’s supportive. Even if you have to deal with a little bit of bulge.” Too little support around can put too much pressure on strap-bearing shoulders.
4. You remove your bra as soon as you get home. If it’s that uncomfortable, says Tukiainen, something’s wrong.

Wedding cake from Eat Cake!

Once upon a time, adding color to a bridal gown might have generated some heated gossip in the reception hall powder room, but today’s brides are coloring outside the lines of tradition and adding their favorite hues to table linens, wedding favors, the wedding cake, and even the bridal gown.

“Brides traditionally have used creamy tones to create an ethereal effect,” says event planner Janie Haas of North Andover. “Today, I see brides shooting for strong colors that are woven throughout the events. Jewel tones, plums, and terracotta are quite popular.”

Hilary Larson of Eat Cake! in Newburyport says color is now in high-demand. “Instead of the cake being mostly white or ivory with accents in their wedding color, it’s quite the opposite.” Larson says that traditions and obligatory themes are not as popular as themes and style choices that best represent the personalities of the couple. She notes a recent client, a fashion model, who wanted her cake to be entirely red with monochromatic designs. “It turned out beautiful and certainly made a bold statement,” she says.

Donna Fucaloro of Pepperberry’s Flowers in Byfield sees the trend of bright colors, including lime greens and purples, popping up in floral design as well. “Many brides are adding embellishments, like Swarovski crystals, rhinestones, or pearls in their bouquets. I see a lot of brides adding their theme color by weaving a ribbon through the bouquet,” says Fucaloro.

2Be Spring Collection dress from Lorraine Roy.

While strong colors are popular in many wedding elements, the color trend is more subtle when it comes to the dress. “Many of the popular designs give a classic gown some contemporary flair by adding things like an aqua sash or amethyst embroidery—a splash of color that brides can carry through as a theme for the wedding.” says Jeanne Hennessey of Lorraine Roy in Danvers.

And what about the bridesmaids? Brides are selecting a specific color for the shoes but allowing the bridesmaid to choose their own style and construction. “Purple is big along with gray and metallic,” according to Gary Webber of Shoe Galley in Swampscott.

Finally, what would a wedding be without luscious, colorful lips to kiss? Andrea Ducharme of Rouge Cosmetics in Salem says it’s all about the 1930s glamour. “Think Jean Harlow—a deep, vampy red lip, some false lashes, and perfect skin or even a bright pop of color on the lip, like a bright fuchsia or peachy pink, and some sheer gold eye shadow,” she says. “This look is very sophisticated and would perfectly compliment a simple column gown that has a lot of embellishment.”

When was the last time you closed your eyes and made a wish? We’re not talking about praying for a particular presidential pick or stock market soar, but one of those childlike wishes when you blow on a dandelion or try to pluck a star from the sky and actually believe it will come true? The holidays are the perfect time to believe in magic, and the North Shore is the ideal spot to celebrate the holiday spirit.

We’ve scoured the North Shore to bring you a bounty of gifts to bestow on your family and friends so that you don’t have to travel far and wide to celebrate in style. Does your toddler dream of dressing up in couture and enjoying her own private photo shoot? Are you wishing to bellydance with your girlfriends, enjoy Godiva chocolates, and a privately catered dinner in the grand salon of a posh beachfront inn? Perhaps you yearn for the simple things like a fresh cup of gourmet coffee, a couple of bonbons, or the aroma of pine wafting through your home.

Whether the loved ones and cherished friends on your gift list this season want to drive along the shore in the ultimate sports coupe, tune into the latest technology, slip away to a spa, light a fragrant candle, or enjoy a New England cruise with a crew of seven aboard a mega-yacht, we’ve got you covered.

Hailed by its earliest settlers as “the greatest town for fishing in New England,” Marblehead is now known as “The Sailing Capital of the World,” boasting more boats per capita than any other town or city on the face of the earth. No wonder, then, that it was also the birthplace of the U.S. Navy (sorry, Beverly) and the destination of Old Ironsides’ historic bicentennial sail in 1997.

Each year, hundreds of sailors gather in Marblehead for Race Week (which takes place toward the end of July), when crews of all ages and sizes participate in a beautiful and exciting competitive parade of sail. Every other year, international crews descend on Marblehead to prepare for the historic race to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

When not racing around the beautiful coastline, ’Headers enjoy the historic charms of Old Town as well as the contemporary treats of Atlantic Avenue and the surrounding downtown area. From local joints to fine dining establishments and from seaborne antiques to the latest in home and personal fashion, Marblehead has it all!

Marblehead I.D.
Located 17 miles north of Boston, Marblehead is situated on a peninsula originally purchased from America’s FirstPeoples in 1648.

Marblehead is so named because its rocky shoreline looked like marble. The town – which has also been called “Marble Harbor,” and “Marvill Head,” as well as “Fowey”(pronounced “foy”), after a town in Cornwall, England – is as refreshing as the sea air. It is filled with arts and culture and great dining and shopping. Long a summer resort town, Marblehead is now bustling year ’round and is a great place to visit or live.

“You don’t come here unless you mean to,” says Marblehead Museum curator Karen MacInnis. “It is a destination.”

Date of settling: 1629
Date of incorporation: 1649
Population: 20,366
Median home price: $484,000
Median household income: $99,892

Castle Rock (Ocean Avenue) – A natural outcropping that is great for climbing, sunbathing, or watching the folks at the French-inspired “castle” Carcassonne (which was built by pioneering entrepreneur Lydia Pinkham) skinny dip.

As Marblehead is such a historic town, it makes sense to start in a historic store. So take a walk to Old Town to visit Sacks Antiques (38 State Street), the oldest antiques store in the state. Stanley Sacks is a third-generation antiques dealer and he knows how to get exactly what you want.

Just down the street is Brass ’N Bounty (68 Front Street), which specializes in marine-themed antiques and gifts.

For more nautical fare, drop by Nauticals of Marblehead (128 Washington Street), a cool store that sells handcrafted furniture made from pieces of wooden boats.

Actually want to go into the water? Atlantic Charters (13 Drumlin Road) can get you on board.

Want something new for the wardrobe? Then look for Bus Stop (2 Market Square). From Cut Loose to Tianello, they offer one-stop shopping for fun women’s fashion.

And for the younger (or young-at-heart) woman who needs a new look, head over to Babe (7 Pleasant Street) for Tractor Brand, Flowers by Zoe, Monkey Wear and other “clothing and accessories for hip chicks.”

Need a place to put your new clothes? Then surely, the place to go is Cargo Unlimited (118 Washington Street), another family-owned “Best of North Shore” award winner.

In the mood for fine art? Explore the collection at Erlich Gallery (96 Washington Street) where renowned art dealer Linda Erlich will be more than happy to help you pick out just the right piece.

When it is time to frame that perfect picture of your perfect day in Marblehead, drop by Arnould Gallery (111 Washington Street) for expert custom frame work or even an entire work of art.

After you have explored the tiny streets of Old Town, go up the hill and past Abbot Hall to Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead’s “main drag.” Here you will find even more great places to browse and buy.

If you want to look as if you just stepped off the QE II, check out “Best of North Shore” award-winner Kaps Menswear (22 Atlantic Avenue). From Canali to Zegna, this family-run men’s store will suit you to a tee…or even a suit!

In the mood for baubles, bangles, and beads? Then drop into Jambu (38 Atlantic Avenue) for hip handmade jewelry.

If you are looking for something to make your home shine, C’est la Vie (24 Atlantic Avenue) offers everything from armoire shelves and antique lamp shades to mosaic tables and pottery.

If you bring a four-legged friend along, be sure to visit Pawsitively Marblehead (63 Atlantic Avenue), where pampered pets (and their owners) can dig up all sorts of treats.

For your smaller two-legged friends, Mud Puddle Toys (1 Pleasant Street) offers hand-selected toys, books, and children’s furniture.

Tired from all the sightseeing? Then maybe you need to stop in to Hand in Hand Massage (70 Atlantic Avenue) for a quick rub-down.

While your pampering yourself, float over to Dayle’s European Skin Care and Day Spa (261 Washington Street) for everything from an eyelash extension or pedicure to a full Body Bliss package.

Getting hungry but not ready for a full meal? Pop into Fruit of the Four Seasons (34 Atlantic Avenue) for the freshest produce around. (They also offer “Best of North Shore” award-winning Richardson’s ice cream!)

Back in Old Town, there is The Driftwood (63 Front Street), a local spot where fishermen and financiers meet and mingle over coffee, signature sandwiches, and, on weekends, New Orleans-inspired beignet.

Need your morning caffeine fix? Then take a bleary-eyed stroll to Java Sun (35 Atlantic Avenue) where the smell of the always-roasting beans alone will perk you up.

If you want to look out over Marblehead’s sparkling harbor as you dine, try the “Best of North Shore” award-winning restaurant and pub The Landing (81 Front Street) with its live music and great Sunday brunch or The Barnacle (141 Front Street), which is known for its lobster.

Speaking of lobster, another great place to go is The Lobster Pound (33 Smith Street), which is located near Marblehead’s post office. (“Wish you were here!”)

Back on Atlantic is Flynnie’s on the Avenue (28 Atlantic Avenue), home of north shore friend chef Louise Moore and some of the best steak tips and veggie fare around. (They also have a location on Devereux Beach!)

For some poolside fare, head over to Gilli’s Café (4 Community Road) for great American and Middle Eastern treats from falafel to pizza.

If you need a quick but elegant pick-me-up, try a specialty coffee or pastry at Café Appassionato (12 Atlantic Avenue).

In the mood for Italian? Well, then, you can go to either Marblehead House of Pizza (3 Atlantic Avenue) or the recently renovated Tony’s Pizza (1 School Street) or you can have a seat at the award-winning Pellino’s (261 Washington Street) or Café Italia (10 School Street).

Want to Thai one on? Then get to know Sticky Rice (26 Hawkes Street) – the place for authentic tastes of Siam.

Can’t decide? Then maybe you need to go to Shubie’s Market Place (16 Atlantic Avenue). Their selection of prepared foods and wines is so expansive, it earned a “Best of North Shore” award!

Another good choice for those who want to eat at home but do not want to cook is J. & S. Brandi’s (7 Bessom Street). With their team of professional chefs, they can cater (literally) to your every need.

And when it’s finally time for dessert…

Delphin’s Gourmandise (258 Washington Street) offers fine European pastries.

If homemade candy is your thing, then visit Stowaway Sweets (154 Atlantic Avenue).

If you want to have your cake and eat it too, Ladycakes (2 School Street) fits the bill.

And if you want that cake a la mode, go next door to Ice Cream Café (7 School Street) for “Best of North Shore” Richardson’s ice cream at old-fashioned ice cream parlor prices.

As it is such a stylish town, it may be no wonder that Marblehead has produced three internationally-known handbag designers.

For Marblehead native Ann V. Perrino, founder of Ann Veronica Handprints, it all started in 1975 with the purchase of a hand-printed tote bag made by her high school art teacher. Called Marblehead Handprints, the totes quickly became the rage all along the East Coast. Twenty-six years later, Ann revived the line in an effort to bring affordable, original, and whimsical textile art to a new generation.

Ann Veronica Handprints www.annveronica.com
A. Little Diamond Island Duffel in Lauren’s Circles $48. B. Marblehead Tote in Toy Boat $49.

Helen E. Riegle and her husband Chris run HER Design from their Washington Street headquarters. Their high-style handbags are made from organic, sustainable, and animal-friendly materials, including U.S.-grown certified organic cotton canvas and Treetap, a sustainably-produced rubber from the Amazon.

HER Design LLC www.her-design.com
C. Glory (turquoise with coral lining). $188. D. Lotus (coral rose, natural lining). $98.

Tamara Freedman grew up in Marblehead but launched her career in New York, where she worked as a handbag designer for Ralph Lauren and Liz Claiborne. In 2003, she returned home to launch Tamara Handbags. Her polished andpretty collection of clutches, satchels, totes, and wallets has been featured in Lucky, Teen People, and Us Weekly, as well as on E! Style Network’s series “Big Boutique.” They have also graced the forearms of suchcelebs as Brittney Spears and the windows of over 200 boutiques nationwide.

Salem Diner (326 Canal Street)
Enter the Sterling Streamliner, which has been welcoming patrons for nearly 60 years and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop in for a roadside meal and enjoy the vintage fare.

Hankering for a hot dog?
The Boston Hot Dog Co. (60 Washington Street) has so many types of hot dogs; veggie, turkey, chicken, all-beef kosher…just to name four. When you factor in the number of condiment options, the dog combinations are infinite, and so could be your contemplation time.

Visit Bertini’s (282 Canal Street) for a family-friendly, casual atmosphere.

At Leslie’s Retreat (96 North Street) you can get some all-you-can-eat pancakes for $1.75 or some lunch and dinner featuring many American favorites for under $10.

At Red’s Sandwich Shop (15 Central Street) in the Old London Tea House from the 1700s, the swivel-stool counter is where locals meet to have a quick bite and chat about the happenings around town. Winner of Best Breakfast for 14 years in a row.

Brother’s Restaurant and Deli (283 Derby Street) has mastered home cooking served cafeteria-style. Head on over for fast, quality, comfort foods like French toast, omelets, or a grilled cheese sandwich. Whatever your preference, they’ll make it for you.

Taste of Thyme (122 Washington Street) features cozy décor, great old pictures of Salem, scrumptious breakfasts, and an enormous variety of lunch sandwiches, salads, and soups.

Restaurants with a view…and great seafood too:

Derby Fish and Lobster (215 Derby Street): Stop in for some lobster, fish, or crab, or enjoy a cup of their famous clam chowder.

Strombergs (2 Bridge Street): In operation since 1929, it’s the oldest restaurant in Salem, with a menu that is sure to have something to satisfy your seafood cravings.

The Lobster Shanty (15 Front Street): Lobster dishes are their specialty along with the “best barbecue fare you’ll find in town.”

Feeling adventurous around dinner time, then try the Rockmore Floating Restaurant (94 Wharf Street), in the middle of Salem Harbor, reachable only by boat. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day enjoy food from the sea on the sea.

Get cozy by the fireplace at Finz (76 Wharf Street) with one of their pretty martinis and artistically presented seafood dishes, or try something from their raw bar.

The upstairs fireplace at Capt.’s Waterfront Grill and Club (94 Wharf Street) is equally enticing, where casual dining meets gourmet entrees. The outdoor patio, open on warm days, overlooks the Salem Harbor with one of the best restaurant views around town.

It was the slow-roasted prime rib that made Victoria Station (86 Wharf Street) famous, but their seafood is of the freshest and their all-you-can-eat salad bar has always been a hit. With such affordable prices, no wonder they have been in business for nearly 30 years.

Ethnic Eateries:

Bistros and Cafes:
Top Dog (2 Doyles Cove Road)
How about a fresh Chihuahua? This dog is steamed or grilled and topped with jalapeno peppers, salsa, and cheese. This innovative restaurant serves all-meat, turkey, or veggie dogs just the way you like them.

Beach Street Bistro (18 Beach Street)
Just across the street from Front Beach. Start your day with the strawberry pancakes, head over for a lunch of grilled chicken salad, or stop in for an elegant dinner featuring Tuscan herb-rubbed pork wrapped in prosciutto.

The Greenery Café &
Restaurant (15 Dock Square)
You can pop in for a fresh, made-from-scratch pastry and cappuccino in the storefront style café, or return for a lunch or dinner menu that features fresh lobster, steamers, steak, and a first-rate salad bar.

Lograsso’s Café & Bistro
(13 Railroad Avenue)
This daytime deli turns into an Italian-American bistro at night with a menu that includes puttanesca over ziti and “Extreme Pasta Chicken Salad”.

Porticello (32 Bearskin Neck)
Pan-baked specialty pizza and great pasta dishes. Try one of their oven-baked extravaganzas like the “Hot Sicilian”, and wash it all down with a root beer.

Flav’s Red Skiff (15 Mt. Pleasant Street)
Everyone’s favorite, hands down. Just go.

Dining with a view:

The Grand Café at Emerson Inn by the Sea (One Cathedral Avenue)
Named the “Editors Pick” by Yankee Magazine. Jumbo shrimp martinis and the Grand Café Lobster, are my favorites.

Brackett’s Oceanview Restaurant (25 Main Street)
Fish lovers and carnivores will both enjoy Brackett’s diverse menu. You’ll find traditional seafood favorites like clam chowder and fish cakes, but also lasagna and baked stuffed chicken. Don’t leave without ordering grape-nut pudding for dessert!

My Place By-The-Sea Restaurant (68 Bearskin Neck)
There’s something about dining in the fresh ocean air that makes dishes like poached mussels in white wine taste even better. Watch the 4th of July fireworks and Rockport bonfire from the outdoor deck, fabulous!

Ellen’s Harborside Restaurant (1 T-Wharf)
Three generations of the Balzarini family have been serving up memories in this beautiful restaurant featuring daily specials. Aside from seafood, this restaurant boasts the best pit barbecue in the area.

Roy Moore Lobster Company (39 Bearskin Neck)
This is what I call “roughing it” to the max. Stop in for a traveling dinner of lobster, and eat it on the rocks at the far end of the Neck while enjoying the panoramic ocean view. The experience is priceless!

Lobster Pool Restaurant (329 Granite Street)
Enjoy deep-fried seafood, fresh lobster, hearty salads, chicken, and home-baked pies. Extra large picnic tables outside, inside accommodations are comfy and warm if there is a sea breeze. Kids love to climb the rocks while adults linger over a glass of wine and watch one of the best sunset views in Rockport.

The Blacksmith Shop Restaurant (23 Mt. Pleasant Street)
This historic restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with special delights like crab cakes Benedict and pan-seared salmon drizzled with lemon wine sauce. Don’t want seafood? Try the fresh veal Marsala or a nice sirloin steak.

The Sea Garden Restaurant at the Seaward Inn (44 Marmion Way)
This breakfast-only restaurant is off the beaten path but well worth the drive. Try the Granite Pier French Toast or the Gap Cove Omelet.

Helmut’s Strudel (69 Bearskin Neck)
Strolling with sweets and snacks. Been walking and need a unique treat? Try a flaky pastry or Austrian strudel with an espresso or fresh-squeezed orange juice. A must in your travels through Rockport.

Tuck’s Candy Factory (7 Dock Square)
A variety of incredible chocolates, truffles, and treats of the finest quality. Don’t leave without some buttercrunch, and grab a box of taffy for the folks back home.

Rockport Fudgery (4 Tuna Wharf)
Hand-whipped copper-kettle fudge. Buy it by the piece or the pound but buy enough, because it may not make it home. A wide variety of flavors, but there’s something to be said for simple chocolate fudge made well.

Sundays (3 South Road)
Creamy and rich, ice cream never tasted so good. Stop in for a cone or dish to stroll with, or linger over a big hot fudge sundae with all the fixings, and don’t forget the cherry!

Places to shop…

With the vast array of specialty shops lining Main Street, School Street, Dock Square, Bearskin Neck, and Whistlestop Mall plenty of retail therapy is available in Rockport. But don’t forget to look out at the water once in a while!

Sara Elizabeth (5 Whistlestop Mall)
If you haven’t seen these graphic textile prints, you’re in for a treat. Trained by the renowned Folly Cove Designers, Sara Elizabeth has retired, but Isabel Natti carries on the tradition in this tiny shop tucked away in Whistlestop Mall. Isabel will happily explain the process of block printing on paper and cloth using her 19th century Acorn press.

J.M. Syron and Bonnie Bishoff (31 Poole’s Lane #20)
Syron and Bishoff have been collaborating in designing and making furniture since 1987. By combining polymer clay surfaces with wood and carved elements, they create unique yet practical furniture.

Village Silversmith (27 Dock Square and 20 Bearskin Neck)
Are you looking for a signature piece of jewelry? This family-owned business has been making stunning pieces for over 30 years. From green tea turquoise pendants to contemporary silver pieces from Tucson, you’ll find something for every outfit you own.

Mark, Fore & Strike (5 Dock Square)
Who needs the Hamptons? Stop in for fun, casual apparel and accessories for women and men. Really great shirts, shorts, and resort wear. Jackets, belts, jewelry, and flip-flops fill out this upbeat store.

La Provence (21 Dock Square)
Jacquard linens are a staple here, but you’ll also find Henriot toiletries, Quimper Faience pottery, and gorgeous Roger & Gallet gift boxes. 100% all natural vegetable based fragrance-free soaps.

Good Dog Gallery (6 Dock Square)
Every dog lover knows Stephen Huneck’s whimsical prints of canines in action. A great selection of his work, along with dog collars, leashes, pillows, lamps, rugs, books; you get the idea.

Bearskin Neck Leathers (7 Old Harbor Road)
Don’t let that old seventies feel fool you. When you step into this terrific leather shop, you’ll see a selection firmly in the new millennium with a huge selection of coats, jackets, handbags and accessories. Naot and Dansko orthodic footwear, and Minnetonka sheepskin slippers.

Butlers Haberdashery (39 Main St.)
Wonderful men’s and women’s clothing and sportswear and a fine selection of accessories. If you’re traveling and need anything for beach, town, or dining out, you’ll find it here.

Toad Hall Bookstore (47 Main St.)
Founded in 1972 as the direct result of Earth Day, Toad Hall has always given 100% of its profits to environmental projects. A charming bookstore with a terrific selection.

Hanna Wingate of Rockport (11 Main St.)
Antique and reproduction furniture, with a focus on French Provincial. Small selection of unique linens and accessories for the home. The fabulous George Anderson prints of Rockport are also available.

John Tarr (49 Main St.)
Since 1887, this venerable clothing store has supplied locals with some of the best brands of all-weather clothing available. A huge selection of comfort shoes and the socks to match, and sunhats, rain gear, polar fleece, and chinos.

The Pewter Shop (16 Bearskin Neck)
Called the oldest gift shop in Rockport, the Pewter Shop offers high quality pewter from their own workshop on Bearskin Neck, as well as fine pewters from all over the world. Danforth, Empire, Hampshire, Royal Selangor and Woodbury are just of the pewterers they represent.

Demetra (6 Smith St.)
Joanne Demetra’s artfully designed jewelry of semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, and metals is rightfully called “wearable art.” One-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces only. Commissioned designs are welcome.

Cynthia Curtis Pottery (80 Pigeon Hill St.)
Cynthia’s high-fire stoneware will remind you of the foamy seashore no matter where you live. You’ll never tire of looking at the local beach glass melted into some of the glazed pieces. Vases, lamps, pitchers, and platters.

Rockport Quilt Shoppe (2 Ocean Avenue)
Over 100 antique quilts from the late 1700s to the 1940s fill this charming shop. Also available are pillows, linens, custom quilts and textile restoration. Call ahead, they are open seven days a week, by appointment or by chance. 978-546-1001.

Lesley Wind (338 Granite Street)
You may have seen Lesley’s work in the Peabody-Essex Museum shop. Fine handcrafted jewelry in gold, sterling silver and bronze. Her fluid shawl and sweater pin designs are exquisite. Call 978-546-6539 to ask about custom orders or to visit Lesley’s gallery.

Where to chow down and shop in North Andover.

Ethnic Eateries

Bollywood Grill (350 Winthrop Ave)
Spice up your night with some curry and cumin while soaking up some local Indian culture. Dine on traditional Indian dishes.

China Blossom (946 Osgood St)
Whether you are up for a buffet or down for a scorpion bowl, China Blossom stands as the largest Chinese restaurant in the area. Kiss 108 DJ’s jam on weekend nights, so don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Beijing Restaurant & Lounge (1250 Osgood St)
is always buzzing with the sounds of sizzling dishes and, maybe even more distinctively, karaoke singers. If you aren’t quite up for a night of tunes though, don’t worry, you can dine in or take out.

China Wok (129 Main St).
Dependable take-out downtown.

Eastern Iron Chef (733 Turnpike St)
If you have had your fill of traditional Chinese but still crave an Asian flare, you can stop by this fabulous destination for some Eastern Asian and Hong Kong cuisine.

Orzo Trattoria (1085 Osgood Street-Rte 125)
This traditional Italian eatery located in Butcher Boy plaza, is one of North Andover’s “best kept secrets.” From the chicken parmigiana to the lobster and pasta special every Friday, there are many options to please your palette.

New Kids on the Block

Casa Blanca (1070 Osgood St)
Even though this family-owned Mexican restaurant and cantina is more than qualified to fill the spot of an “ethnic eatery,” it’s really made a splash as the new best thing.

Burtons Grill (145 Turnpike St)
North Andover finally has an up-scale steakhouse we can call our own. Featuring contemporary American cuisine, every course is more distinct and delicious than the next, making dining at Burtons worth every penny (and calorie).

Eatz (57 Water St)
For early risers or late lunchers, Eatz is the perfect spot for grabbing a satisfying breakfast or lunch. Dine on a dime every time at this relatively new treasure and talk of the town.

Oldies but Goodies

Harrison’s Roast Beef (80 Chickering Rd)
If you are from North Andover you’ve undoubtedly inhaled a Harrison’s famous sandwich at least once. Its face remains unchanged with time, and the food continues to draw herds of consumers daily.

Top of the Scale’s Restaurant (4 Johnson St)
Located above the now defunct Hayscales Exchange in old North Andover center, this has been a dining destination for decades. Visit for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

The Loft Restaurant and Pub (1140 Osgood St)
One of Route 125′s very own landmarks, The Loft stands tall as a rustic steakhouse amidst modern developments. Whether you are dining upstairs on a rib-eye steak or cheering on your favorite team in the lower level bar and lounge, the Loft is always the perfect destination for some local flavor.

Val’s Restaurant (91 Main St)
Welcome yourself to the neighborhood by sharing in tradition and stopping at Val’s for breakfast or lunch.

Mango Grille (585 Chickering Rd)
Putting a Caribbean twist on American fare, Mango Grille spices up North Andover with both flavor and fun.

Baystate Chowder (109 Main St)
Looking for some chowda? Come taste an award-winning cup at Baystate Chowder. Not a fan of chowder? No worries, they also have great wrap sandwiches and cookies for that sweet tooth!

Crumpets Tea Room (56 Water St).
Tea party anyone? Adorable and quaint. High tea and finger sandwiches.

Café (208 Sutton St)
Variety of fresh sandwiches and salads.

Joe’s Landing Café (492 Sutton St).
Located in the Municipal Airport, you can stop for breakfast or lunch 7 days a week and watch the planes come and go. With a Lebanese owner, it’s standard grill fare with some Middle Eastern dishes.

Cheryl Juba, owner of B Sporty, a retail sports apparel store specializing in North Andover Logo apparel and accessories, meets and greets lots of North Andover residents who frequent her store located on Route 125 sandwiched between North Andover Middle and High Schools. B Sporty is the kind of place the proverbial “soccer mom” frequents on a regular basis for everything from mouth guards to varsity jackets. As such, B Sporty becomes a kind of hub for town news and sharing of all the places old and new to shop around town.

”North Andover can boast a diverse offering of places to shop that are sprinkled about the town rather than concentrated in one downtown location,” says Cheryl. “You may need to work a bit harder to get to them, but they are worth the trip.”
