MARBLEHEAD – April 2009 -Â The Sea Gull Shop in Marblehead has opened its “Artists Loft” featuring renowned North Shore artists. The Loft, which is located on the second floor of the Seagull Shop has a myriad of mixed media for sale and will be continually revolving artists.
According to store proprietor Elizabeth Laub, “We are ecstatic over the quality of artists that we have attracted here. They are excited to be in our community since many of their pieces capture the essence of the North Shore. We opened the Loft with a wide variety of artwork which includes beautiful paintings of Marblehead, as well as jewelry, photography, and much more.”
“Upstairs at The Sea Gull, an Artisans Loft came about from wanting to showcase local artisans while maintaining the shop’s mission of being ‘purveyors of fine gifts’. The Seas Gull has carried over with what we feel our shoo reflects, essentially the feeling of Marblehead by choosing fine artists that bring a passion to their craft. We are showcasing them in their newly renovated sun-filled upstairs, creating a wonderful space to view the fine are and find the perfect gift for any occassion.” explained Ms. Laub.
The Sea Gull has opened the loft with the artwork of Back Bay photographer Jen Matson, known for photographing nature and outdoor imagery. “We are excited that Jen recently spent the afternoon in Marblehead with her camera!” said Ms. Laub. “In addition we are thrilled to have pieces created by Michelle and Bill Champitto, owners of ‘Fresh Cut Glass’. They are the creators of artisan crafted glass art windows, infusion jars, wall scones, and more.Â
Also, The Gull Shop has worked with Karen Roberts, a Marblehead artist who paints on canvas of all sizes. “Karen uses the coastline as inspiration for her beautiful works. She also has included hand-carved shore birds, created by her father, Bill Roberts.”
The loft also includes handmade jewelry by Diane Kelley of Winthrop. All of her pieces use the finest quality of crystal, vintage glass, recycled glass, and semi precious stones. Gift buyers will love Sandy Guys’ Merrimack Valley Essentials, a selection of handmade soaps and body products made with all natural ingredients. “Sandy was a featured ‘Secret Shopper’ in the Boston Globe, February 2000,” said Ms. Laub.
Another featured artist, Mary Bowles and Kerri Bromberger. The two only use genuine natural, non-endangered seashells and sea life to create mosaics, ornaments, night-lights and many other gorgeous items including mirrors.
The Sea Gull Shop is located at 146 Washington Street in Marblehead.
