MARBLEHEAD – MAY 2009 – The Marblehead Rotary Club welcomed Don Morgan of the Marblehead Farmer’s Market at their Thursday afternoon meeting on May 21st at the Boston Yacht Club. Don announced the opening day of the Farmer’s Market, Saturday, June 13th, and he discussed the importance of buying local and supporting our local farms.
About the Farmer’s Market: Mission Statement
Reminiscent of the market days of our forebears, our goal is to provide: A community building event. An opportunity for residents to improve their nutritional intake. Support for local farmers to help them avoid selling their fields for development and to keep a viable local food source.
What is a Farmers’ Market?
A Farmers’ Market is an adventure. There are always interesting and unexpected items. It is also an education – you will undoubtedly learn something about varieties of produce, what grows well, when, under what conditions, and how to select, store and prepare them. Farmers love questions! Please ask – it’s part of the fun. We have a combination of organic and conventional farms represented. Also there are educational booths, entertainment, chef demonstrations, and craft vendors.
The basics…
Come early. We open at 9am. Our market closes precisely at noon so our vendors can get home to their families. Bring cash and your own bags.
Regular Vendors:
6 farms selling a variety of locally grown produce and flowers.
7 specialty farms selling herbs, a variety of meats, Asian veggies, and cheeses.
7 farms/vendors selling homemade prepared foods (muffins, scones, pies, breads, jams & jellies, pickles, prepared meals, etc.)
3 tents hosting a rotating group of about 2 dozen craft vendors selling home made items such as pottery, fine art, hand bags, dog biscuits, jewelry, etc.
Friends of Abbot Library selling used books at “can’t say no” prices.
And at least two each week:
Chefs from local restaurants
Musicians and other entertainers
Exhibits by local groups interested in the environment, town departments and other local not-for-profit groups
