The sixth annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival will be unlike any other, bringing the hot sounds of national New Orleans jazz talent, national bands and local ensembles to the Salem Willows on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 & 19, from 11:15 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday’s solid lineup features The Pimps of Joytime, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Dub Apocalypse, Silvia Moreno, and the Salem High School Jazz Band. The lineup for Sunday is just as strong with more jazz and soul sounds with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band headlining, HDRnB, Soule Monde, Joel Larue Smith, and the North Shore Jazz Project All-Stars.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine that has been together for more than 30 years. They are synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They revitalized the brass band in New Orleans and around the world touring constantly in the U.S. and in over 30 other countries on five continents. The Dirty Dozen have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John and the Black Crowes. The Pimps of Joytime are a charismatic, soulful band, whose well-crafted songs invite the listener to enter a world of infectious dance grooves and indelible melodies, performed by soulful vocalists and skilled musicians. The have recently collaborated with Cyril and Art Neville of the Neville Brothers and Roy Ayers.
The two-day festival will also feature a Salem Five music education tent, a kid’s tent, arts & crafts sale and much more.
The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival is a family-friendly, free event that presents a dynamic program of jazz, funk and soul performed by some of the hottest bands from New England and the United States. Ipswich Ale sponsors a beer pavilion at the Festival for both days. Proceeds from the Festival support music education and cover the expenses for putting on the Festival.
Also, on Saturday afternoon, May 12, The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival /Berklee College Summer Series kicks off with a performance by The Soul of a Man, a modern day, high energy R&B band whose sound is infused with blues, gospel, soul, and funk. The concert is held from 5 to 7 p.m. in Derby Square in downtown Salem, MA.
