This January, Cape Ann residents (Rockport, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Essex) can enjoy the galleries and special exhibitions of the Cape Ann Museum for free.
In addition to its permanent collections, which represent, not only the history of Cape Ann, but its people, its industries, and its art and culture, the museum features rotating special exhibitions, including ““Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker,” showcasing the artistry of the New England instrument maker and “Kodachrome Memory: Nathan Benn’s North Shore, 1978,” showcasing more than 30 photographs taken in and around Cape Ann for National Geographic by Nathan Benn, both of which are currently on display.
The museum has also put together a full schedule of programming for the month of January, in addition to the free admission. The schedule is as follows:

Artist Talk and Reception with Nathan Benn
Oak Leaves, Potatoes, and Kodachrome: The Story of Color at National Geographic
In conjunction with the special exhibition, “Kodachrome Memory: Nathan Benn’s North Shore, 1978,” photographer Nathan Benn will discuss the evolution of color photography and his career at National Geographic in the 1970s and ‘80s. Reception to follow at 3:00 p.m. Talk is free for CAM members and Cape Ann residents or with Museum admission. Space is limited; reservations required. Reception follows is free and open to the public.

Conversations with Contemporary Artists: Paul Cary Goldberg
Photographer Paul Cary Goldberg, whose work is on view in the special exhibition Voicing the Woods, will give an illustrated lecture on his photographic work, past and present. This program is free and open to the public. Space is limited; reservations required. Support for this program provided by the Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation.

CAM Kids: Cape Ann Improv
Families are invited to join Cape Ann Improv for improvisational games in the galleries. Cape Ann Improv is dedicated to bringing the art of improvisational comedy to the community. Sylvester Ahola Jamboree
Celebrate “Gloucester’s Gabriel” and the arrival of a newly conserved portrait of the famous jazz trumpeter. Bring instruments and stories of Sylvester Ahola and enjoy a musical jamboree with a sampling of his music and a screening of a silent film about the Lanesville native. Free and open to the public.

Cape Ann Shipwrecks with Captain Raymond H. Bates, Jr.
Captain Raymond H. Bates, Jr., a lifelong scallop diver, lobsterman, author and historian will discuss his newly published book, Shipwrecks North of Boston, Vol. 2, Cape Ann. Free and open to the public. Copies of this book will be available in the CAM Shop.
