The Cape Ann Museum will hold a series of events this fall that are sure to give you a fantastic showing of art and culture in Gloucester. Here are seven that we’ve rounded up:

Bones of Homes Walking Tour

Saturday, September 16 at 10 a.m.

A guided walking tour in the immediate area around the museum meant to give you an architectural analysis of mid-18th- to the mid-20th century styles of buildings in Gloucester. This tour will be held rain or shine and last about an hour and a half. Bring comfortable shoes and clothes as well as an umbrella, just in case. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members(includes museum admission) and can also be purchased online at Eventbrite. Space is limited and a reservation is required for the tour.

Thoreau’s Resistance

Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m.

A lecture by a leading Thoreau scholar and author of The Portable Thoreau, Jeffrey S. Cramer. Space for this event is limited and reservations are required. This lecture is offered as part of A Weekend with Thoreau a collaborated event with Cape Ann Museum, Sawyer Free Library and Gloucester Writers Center celebrating Henry David Thoreau. Meet the author and illustrator of BIG MACHINES: The Story of Virginia Lee Burton

Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m.

Come see the author and illustrator talk about the artistic process and inspiration for their book BIG MACHINES. The book will be on sale in the museum and a book signing will follow the show. This presentation is more centered for adults and is free for anyone to check out. Seats are limited and is first come first serve. Trails & Sails – Celebrate the Gloucester Sea Serpent!

Saturday, September 23 at 10 a.m.

An open to the public event to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Gloucester Sea Serpent Sighting! Make sea serpent sculptures in the Museum Courtyard and at noon you will head to the Maritime Gloucester for more art activites and fun. Participation in both events is not necessary but encouraged.

Rock Bound: Painting the American Scene on Cape Ann and Along the Shore

On view through October 29

With paintings drawn from private collections and the Museum’s own holdings, Rock Bound explores the ways in which an array of artists of the early 20th century sought to capture the natural beauty of the area, the power of the ocean and the hardscrabble way of life that was quickly disappearing in other areas.

Drawn from Nature & on Stone: The Lithographs of Fitz Henry Lane

October 7, 2017- March 4, 2018

Drawn from Nature & on Stone is the first comprehensive exhibition focusing on Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) as a printmaker. Georgia Barnhill, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Graphic Arts Emerita at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA, served as guest curator and worked closely with the Museum to organize this special show. The exhibition, exhibition catalog and related programming are being organized in connection with Fitz Henry Lane Online, a catalogue raisonné and resource tool created by the Museum.

 

WWII Veterans: Portrait Photographs by Jason Grow

October 27, 2017- November 26, 2017

An exhibit first shown in Gloucester City Hall plans to make an encore appearance at the Cape Ann Museum this October through November. Jason Grow’s portrait photographs of the veteran’s of Cape Ann was positively received by all audiences and wishes to do so again at the Museum. Admission is free for any veteran and all active-duty military personnel and their families, this includes the anyone in National Guard or Reserves. On Veteran’s Day the museum will be open to the public and Jason Grow will give a talk about his art.
