Regina Carter: Simply Ella
The foremost jazz violinist of her generation and recipient of the prestigious “genius grant” from the MacArthur Foundation, Regina Carter is touring off her recent release, Ella: Accentuate the Positive, marking the 100th birthday of a musical legend. The program celebrates the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald – the source of Regina’s musical inspiration. Carter is touring off her acclaimed new record, Ella: Accentuate the Positive, an album that finds the violinist interpreting classic tunes associated with Ella Fitzgerald. The release is Carter’s 10th, continuing her string of remarkable studio offerings that balance creative playfulness with jaw-dropping technical skills and a unique boundary-defying musical vision. After a few years of session work with major artists including Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton, she released her eponymous solo debut in 1995, followed by Something for Grace in 1997. That same year she toured with Wynton Marsalis for his Pulitzer Prize winning production Blood on the Fields. Carter then moved to Verve Records where her career truly blossomed, releasing several acclaimed records including the classical-themed Paganini: After a Dream. Carter received a highly coveted Macarthur Fellowship (“genius grant”) in 2006, and four years later released the pan-African-themed record, Reverse Thread. Always musically restless, she explored the roots of southern music next, coming out with the groundbreaking Southern Comfort in 2014. Tickets: $39-$55

Patty Larkin & Liz Longley
This double bill features beloved veteran singer-songwriter Patty Larkin and the young singer-songwriter Liz Longley—both with a unique vision and style rooted in indelible melodies and a powerful poetic lyrical style. A New England folk pop mainstay for the last 30 years, Patty Larkin has crafted a fruitful music career based around her singular voice, affecting songwriting and intricate guitar playing. Her most recent recording, Still Green, has been met with praise from both longtime fans and critics. Her career began busking in the streets of Cambridge and studying jazz guitar at the Berklee School of Music before signing with Rounder Records and releasing her debut Step Into the Light in 1985. From there, Larkin’s prominence in the thriving New England folk scene continued to grow, performing around the country and recording albums. In 2010 she released 25, a retrospective done in her 25th year as a professional recording artist and containing 25 songs, each recorded with backing from a different friend (including Rosanne Cash, Martin Sexton, Shawn Colvin, Greg Brown and others). Patty is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music, where she is now an Artist in Residence, and has earned eleven Boston Music Awards. She joins with Liz Longley, also a Berklee alum, who burst onto the national scene with her two recent records on the beloved roots label Sugar Hill. Her 2015 self-titled debut and last summer’s smash follow-up Weightless have put the talented songwriter on an entirely different level. She has won several high-profile competitions, including the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Competition, the International Acoustic Music Awards and the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriting Competition. NPR Music recorded her set at the Newport Folk Festival, and posted it online as an artist to watch. She has been singled out by SiriusXM Radio and invited to play in their studio, and was named one of their Coffee House Discoveries of 2011. Jinjoo Cho, violin and Hyun Soo Kim, piano
Critically acclaimed violinist Jinjoo Cho has established herself as one of the most vibrant, engaging and charismatic violinists of her generation. Gold Medalist of the 2014 Ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of the Indianapolis, Ms. Cho made her first appearance on the international music scene when she garnered the First Grand Prize and Radio Canada’s People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Montreal International Musical Competition at age 17. Times Argus of Montreal proclaimed her performance as possessing “an undeniable charisma and depth…with an intense lyricism and heartfelt tenderness that sent shivers up the spine.” Since then, she has won numerous international awards including the First Prize and Orchestra Award at the Buenos Aires International Violin Competition in 2010, 2nd Laureate at the 2011 Isang Yun International Music Competition, First Grand Prize at the Alice Schoenfeld International String Competition, and the Dorothy DeLay Award at Aspen Music Festival. Jinjoo finished her Bachelor of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM). She also received her Master of Music and Professional Studies from CIM, having studied with Jaime Laredo. Jinjoo has spent the summers at the Aspen Music Festival, Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, Music@Menlo and the Chamber Music Residency Program at The Banff Centre with her pianist Daniel H.S. Mary Chapin Carpenter
Five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Mary Chapin Carpenter hits the road in 2017, performing songs from her expansive 14-album catalog and new songs from her latest record The Things That We Are Made Of, released in 2016. Produced by 2016 Producer of the Year Grammy-nominee Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton), the album features eleven new songs written by Carpenter, and has received critical acclaim from NPR and Rolling Stone, among others. The season opens with a new production of Bellini’s bel canto tragedy Norma, starring Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role, which she has sung to acclaim at the Met in 2013, and is considered one of the world’s leading interpreters of the iconic title character. Joyce DiDonato co-stars as Norma’s colleague and rival, Adalgisa, opposite Joseph Calleja as Pollione and Matthew Rose as Oroveso. Golda Schultz makes her Met debut as Pamina with Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, Charles Castronovo as the fairy tale prince Tamino, Markus Werba as the bird-catching Papageno, Christian Van Horn as Sprecher, and René Pape as Sarastro. The holiday presentation of The Magic Flute, an abridged staging sung in English for families, was the first Live in HD performance to be transmitted. Amidst a bustling Turkish market, the pirate Conrad falls in love at first sight with beautiful Medora, the ward of the slave merchant Lankedem’s bazaar. Conrad kidnaps Medora when Lankedem decides to sell her to the Pasha. Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem and reworked by Alexei Ratmansky from Petipa’s exotic 19th century classic, this miracle of the repertoire is one of the Bolshoi’s most lavish productions.
