Turner’s Seafood, Gloucester
The Turner family arrived in Boston in the 1920s and proceeded to make a name for itself as one of the premier purveyors of seafood. Now, Turner’s is practically a household name—and that’s because Turner’s Seafood is the go-to for anyone searching for the best plate of fish and chips in town. Although Turner’s has other outposts now, in Melrose and Salem, notably, the fresh local haddock, beer-battered and served with French fries, malt vinegar, and tartar sauce at the Gloucester Fish Store and Fish n’ Chip Shoppe, still wins hearts and minds. 4 Smith St., Gloucester, 978-281-7172, turners-seafood.comReaders’ Choice
Village Restaurant, Essex
Atlantic haddock is the star of the show in the Village Restaurant’s crispy, perfect take on fish and chips. Diners can expect an oversized helping of whip-fresh fish, served with piping hot fries, tartar sauce, and plenty of coleslaw and lemon. The restaurant has had ample time to get the dish right—it opened in 1956—and diners agree that this remains one of the best places to dive into this iconic dish. 55 Main St., Essex, 978-768-6400, wedigclams.com
