Halibut Point, Rockport
Visiting Halibut Point can encompass two different sites: Halibut Point State Park and the adjacent Halibut Point Reservation, which is managed by The Trustees. The storied parks are full of history (it’s a former granite quarry), but the real star of the show is nature. Its dramatic granite cliffs plunge into the ocean, offering views as far as Maine’s Mount Agamenticus and the Isles of Shoals, which straddle the border of Maine and New Hampshire. 4 Gott Ave., Rockport, 978-546-2997, mass.gov/locations/halibut-point-state-parkReaders’ Choice
Maudslay State Park, Newburyport
Trails and paths meandering through pine woods, 19th-century architectural gardens, meadows, and Merrimack River views make Maudslay one of the most enchanting places to wander. It’s also home to free performances from Theater in the Open. 74 Curzon Mill Rd., Newburyport, 978-465-7223, mass.gov/locations/maudslay-state-park
