In an effort to show support for REI—one of The Trustees of Reservations’ program partners—and their decision to close their stores on Black Friday to encourage people to #OptOutside and enjoy the season together, The Trustees is offering free entry to their properties that are gated or have parking fees (including Crane Beach and Appleton Grass Rides).
REI has chosen Crane Beach as one of the sites they are recommending to people to get them outdoors and away from the malls. “We hope that waiving entry and parking fees at our properties on Black Friday will encourage families and friends—especially those that haven’t visited a Trustees property before—to get out, be active, and enjoy the outdoors together, says Trustees Northeast Regional Director Terry Cook.
REI has received an overwhelming response for their bold idea. In fact, other states and organizations have been so inspired by the idea that they are supporting the campaign with similar initiatives.
“We applaud REI for taking this important stand to be closed on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year,” says Barbara Erickson, Trustees president and CEO. “By inviting the nation to #OptOutside and reconnect with family and friends during this important time of gratitude, this sends an important message about what is most important at this time of year.”
