Marine Arts Gallery, Marblehead
What’s Unique: After 47 years, next to the Peabody Essex Museum, the Marine Arts Gallery has moved to Marblehead. Weeks after brothers and co-owners Peter and Phil Kiernan opened the space at 26 Atlantic Avenue, they were already selling paintings. One cyclist saw Sergio Roffo’s Cape Dunes while he was riding by and purchased it immediately.
Standout Qualities: Featuring the finest works by 19th-century and contemporary marine artists and beautiful still life and floral works.
Fun Fact: A painting by artist Jack Lorimer Gray, which belonged to art collector Russell Knight of Marblehead, was donated to the PEM upon Mr. Knight’s death 15 years ago. Gray had given a painting to John F. Kennedy, which hung in the Oval Office in 1960 and now resides in the Kennedy Museum in Boston. Now, a second Gray will make its way to Washington D.C.
